Happy Father’s Day! June 17

Have you wondered if all the preparation and effort you put into one week of VBS is worth it? The planning, gathering of supplies, recruiting, training, publicizing, and decorating…is it worth all the effort it takes? When we talk to children about significant experiences that have impacted their faith, VBS is at the top of the list. Oh, yes, it’s absolutely worth it. You know, in a garden you don’t always immediately see results. Those baby seedlings you plant in April won’t actually bear tasty fruit until much later in the summer. As we plan for VBS, remember that the seeds that you’re sowing will grow in God’s time. We can’t wait to celebrate a bountiful harvest with you this summer from June 25 – 29th. Daniel’s Courage in Captivity is the theme this year and our whole VBS staff is excited about letting the kids join Daniel as he discovers firsthand what it means to keep faith in a faithless culture. You see, Daniel was way more than the guy who survived a den of hungry lions! Daniel was torn from his home and forced into the king’s service. Imagine the pressure of learning a new language and culture…and the shock of discovering your best friends have been tossed into a fiery furnace. So get ready to explore exotic sights and smells in a Babylonian bazaar. Taste yummy treats from the Food Court, jump around like silly Babylonians at the Palace playground and share Daniel’s adventures with our Celebration leader at the start and ending of each day. Look for the Children’s Ministry table outside so you too, can join in and plant a few seeds in our Babylonian Hanging Gardens. We still need a Game Leader and of course our Tribe leaders and helpers. Each day during VBS, kids and adults leave the city of Babylon knowing the Bible Story, Bible Point and Key Verse. We have a list of supplies we need as (Continued on page 2)

well, so clean out those dusty cupboards and get ready for an unforgettable time where God’s Word comes to life like never before…touching lives, changing hearts, and drawing kids and adults closer to Christ!

Happy Father’s Day from the PreschoolersPreschoolers• Walk a little slower, Daddy, said a child so small. I’m following in your footsteps and I don’t want to fall. Sometimes your steps are very fast, sometimes they are hard to see; so walk a little slower, Daddy, for you are leading me. Someday when I’m grown up, you’re what I want to be; then I will have a little child who’ll want to follow me. And I would want to lead just right, and know that I was true; so walk a little slower, Daddy for I must follow you.

We have moved to the Fallbrook Public Library on the second Friday of the month from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Everyone is welcome. Bring your questions and your laptop if you have one. A lap top is not necessary but helpful if you wish to follow along with the speaker, or do some research on the Internet or Ancestry.com. Our June meeting moderator will be our own Judy Lindley. She has just finished three memory books for her two grandsons and her nephew. Judy will talk on how she used her genealogy software (RootsMagic) and Word to publish her books. Our genealogy group will continue through the summer months at the Library. During the summer we will concentrate on helping you with your research. See you the 2nd Friday of each month at 1:00 pm at the Fallbrook Library.

From the FPC Flower Fields Not what we have but what we use Not what we see, but what we choose — These are the things that mar or bless The sum of human happiness. C. Urmy • • • • • • • •

Don’t acquire everything you want If you believe for a moment that you own a single possession, your contentment will be tied to it. If you can’t get to sleep at night, check your pillow. If you can’t get to sleep for two nights, check your mattress. If you can’t get to sleep for three nights, check your conscience. Joy comes from controlling, rather than exercising your passions. Faith Matters By Marcy Burge

Lessons in Adversity So, it was this beautiful spring day. You know… the reason we all live in Southern California. Bailey dog was sleeping peacefully, catching the afternoon cool breezes from the open patio door and Claire the cat purred rhythmically with each breath. All the items on my neurotic “to do” list had been crossed off and I was sleepy. Since my unwanted houseguest, cancer, had moved into my abdomen and with my cancer markers on the rise, sleep has been an issue, and additional neurosis my constant companion! It was then that I began to think this disease affects my mind more than my body and has been disturbing my peace. So as I was thinking all this out my friend, Lowie, called from Colorado after a friend of hers, who was praying on my behalf, felt that there was a blockage between me and God. Was I supposed to believe such a thing? And if there was a blockage between myself and God, what was it? What could I do? Blockage? Me? Heaven’s forbid! So I took it to prayer. “If there is such a blockage, Lord, what could it be? I closed my eyes and waited for a reply. “You refuse to rest in me,” I heard almost immediately. What does that mean? “You are still trying to control the outcome of your cancer instead of trusting in me to take care of it.” “Please teach me to let go, Lord.” I replied softly. “Come and sit with me,” came to me interiorly. So that is what I did. I got in my chair, took some deep breaths and rested in the Lord…. I even slept right through dinner! Then as often the case, once I rested, the Lord began teaching me what he meant through a bunch of different avenues all week long. Lesson #1: This whole trust issue…. My friend Jan Hilton has been a true jewel through my health ordeal. She plays mailman, stout hearted pray-er and all around great friend! As we chatted the other day we were talking about scripture and her favorite verse is Proverbs 3:5, “Trust in the

Lord with your whole heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all our ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” It was then I realized that left to my own understanding, I would not be able to smile through this cancer stuff, trust me! I know I’ve shared the following with you but it is worth a repeat. When I get really anxious I repeat this scripture in Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” By repeating this beautiful proverb, I am trusting the Lord as best I can. Sometimes when sleep eludes me I just say it over and over again and it calms my heart, soul and mind. Lesson #2: Taking Captive Our Thoughts As I began my devotional one day last week, this verse stood out like a snowstorm on a sunny day: “May the spoken words of my mouth, the thoughts of my heart, win favor in your sight, O Lord (Ps 19:15).” The explanation in my devotional was so profound: “In every age, there are those who use the spoken words of the mouth and the thoughts of the heart to find fault with God’s ways, as did the Israelites in the desert. Or the doubting opponents of Jesus in the Gospel, or as we do ourselves when God’s plan does not fit our own. Honest questions are never offensive to God, but freely chosen or selfcentered disbelief reveal an inner bitterness from which we ask to be guarded. Let us put our trust in and hand on to others the good news of the astonishing gift of life given through the cross.” What hit me in the above is self-centered disbelief. When our thoughts are self-centered we have shot ourselves in the foot. As Pastor Jerome preached on the St. Francis prayer, last month, we were reminded to put others first and when we do we take ourselves and our problems out of the picture and (Continued on page 10)

Faith Matters (Continued from page 9)

act as Jesus did, laying down our lives for our friends and family. If I sit around and think “ahhhh poor me,” am I capable of doing God’s work? Heck no. It is when I put my self-centered concerns aside that I am able to be more productive, loving and God-centered and as a result peaceful. If I do just one good deed a day for someone else that takes the focus off of me and puts it on someone else and there is no greater joy than that! Also, I had to take a real close look at “the thoughts of my heart.” What I found was that I really wasn’t trusting God in my heart, but doing the best I could to trust him in my head. It made me realize I wouldn’t be so neurotic and not sleeping if I really was truly trusting him in my heart. So, since I made that decision I have been resting much better. Jesus even said in John 17:33, “… In this life you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” So why are we any different than anyone else who has trouble? I run into huge disturbance in my peace if I let my mind wander to “why me” or “look at so in so… they don’t have the problems I have,” or a myriad of other stupid destructive thoughts. If the thoughts of my heart aren’t pure, then darkness reigns on high. I began realizing how important (once again) it is to take captive our thoughts as we are reminded in 2 Corinthians 10. Want to try a fun exercise in respect to the objective of taking captive your thoughts? When your mind is particularly bothered about situations in your life, sit in a quiet spot with a paper and pen and start writing down your thoughts… sit back and notice them crowding your consciousness. You will be surprised at what you find… it’s like Satan himself is whispering in your ear… and you know what? He probably is! As you do this exercise, realize there is a far greater consciousness listening to these stupid thoughts as they infiltrate your peace. Let that logical part of your mind say “enough”! Take captive those destructive thoughts and bind them in the name of our Lord, Jesus and send them

to his cross along with old Booger Butts who is assaulting you! Lesson #3: One Day at a Time I have my next chemo looming in my future… it’s next Thursday and my blood test is today. If I let the fact that I have to go be poked with needles and infused with toxins, I’m a basket case. But if I can wrap myself around the fact that these procedures are keeping the cancer at bay and prolonging my life, I can endure it by the power and strength of my Savior who suffered far greater than I. So the best thing I can do is put it in a holy perspective and give it over to God to give me strength to get through it. I can smile when I want to cry and run out the door, I can pray for others going through the same thing instead of concentrating on myself and I can offer it up to the Lord joining my suffering to his by asking him what the lessons are in going through all of this. That is taking a higher road and trust me I don’t always do it perfectly but I’m trying! Lesson #4: Have prayer warriors on your speed dial! Today is the day after chemo and for all my good intentions when I walked into that lab and sat in that chair and waited for the chemo hook to be placed in my chest I fell apart and fear overtook me like a tsunami. I immediately texted my prayer warriors and sure enough they came through for me. I was no longer alone and that meant the world to me. I could feel the strength of God surrounding me and that made all the difference. Pastor Jerome even sent me a text saying he was praying for peace and rest. And guess what? I slept through the whole procedure and the nurse had to wake me up to tell me it was done! I am so aware of the power of prayer in my life these days and how important it is to be praying for others. I have seen the powerful effects of prayers being offered up on my behalf so I know how important it is to be lifting up the difficult circumstances of others to the Lord. Never doubt for a minute our prayers are heard, this is another avenue of trust we need to learn. I feel your prayers and (Continued on page 11)

they help me so and I am most grateful to all of you! Did you know there is a prayer chain here at the church? You can email or call in a prayer request and before you know it, your prayer request is in cyber space and before a bunch of prayer warriors lifting up our concerns to the Lord in our time of need. And don’t forget those attendance card prayer requests. Your requests are compiled, sent to the prayer chain and prayed over by our pastors and prayer warriors on Wednesday mornings. What a blessing! Lesson #5: Taking Captive Our Homes and Families No one likes to talk much about spiritual warfare but it is a fact. Scripture tells us in Ephesians 6: 12: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” And in 1 Peter 5:8 “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in faith.” So how do we go about protecting ourselves and our loved ones? I suggest the following binding prayer to be said out loud in your home especially if you are experiencing unusual turmoil: Binding Prayer “In the Name of Jesus Christ, by the power of his Blood; in the authority of his Word given to me as a Christian, I bind and reject you Satan and I command you to leave. I seal this room and house, and the members of my family, relatives and possessions in the Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. In the Name of Jesus I bind and reject all familiar spirits; all companion spirits, all cardinal spirits, all spirits of affliction. In the name of Jesus I bind and reject all spirits in the air, in the wind; in the fire; in the netherworld, in the elements, all Satanic forces of Nature. I bind and reject in the Name of Jesus Christ all spirits of confusion; all spirits of disruption; all spirits of division; all sprits of fear, all spirits of disbelief, spirits of deaf and dumb; spirits of disobedience, spirits of games. In the name of Jesus Christ I bind and reject all the aspects and

attributes of these spirits. In the name of Jesus Christ I bind and reject all interlocking spirits. I command you to leave quietly. In the Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ I break and dissolve all curses, spells, hexes, evil wishes, evil desires, and heredity seals. I come against all satanic vows, pacts, satanic sacrifices and Voodoo practices. I break in the Name of Jesus Christ and dissolve all links with psychics, clairvoyants, astrologers, mediums, occult seers, satanic cults, fortune tellers, séances, Ouija boards, tarot cards and occult games of all kinds. Come Holy Spirit and fill me and my loved ones with your presence. Please fill my home with your presence, corner to corner, and ceiling to floor. Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and all the Holy Archangels come and fight this battle for me. I ask for the help of the Holy Angels, Holy Dominations, Holy Powers, Holy Thrones and Holy Principalities. Please be my Shield of Defense against all evil spirits I ask this in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ by the Power of his Blood and in the Authority of His Word given to me as a Christian. Lord Jesus Christ, I ask today for an infilling of the Holy Spirit. Please fill all the empty spaces with your peace, love, healing and joy. I also ask for an increase and release of all the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, all the Power and Fruit of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Words of Knowledge, Faith, Healing Miracles, Prophecy, Discernment of Spirits, Tongues, Interpretation of Tongues, Deliverance, Inner Healing, Teaching, Service, Gift of Encouragement, Gift of Leadership, Gift of Preaching, Gift of Joy and Laughter. Amen.” With this whole cancer nightmare, to be perfectly honest, I have been up and down emotionally and I think that is pretty normal. What is above normal is when I take it to the Lord for the peace that goes beyond understanding through trust, spiritual warfare, prayer support, and trying my best to see beyond what is happening to a heavenly perspective by taking captive my thoughts and learning lessons on compassion for others going through the same thing and praying for them that the Lord will speak (Continued on page 12)

Faith Matters (Continued from page 11)

to their hearts of his love and understanding and to trust the whole process to God’s loving care.

In closing I want to share with you one more scripture that says it all…

What I realized is that there is a real block between God’s grace and me when I am self-absorbed and not trusting and these tendencies are only broken when I take captive my goofy thoughts, think of others first and trust God with my whole heart and soul. Then I have the peace that goes beyond understanding and God can move and breathe in me and through me to others as I try to put them first. It is so much a daily battle but we have the armor of God when we keep fighting the fight and trusting him beyond measure even under difficult, allconsuming circumstances.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13).” Amen, I say to that and may the peace that goes beyond all understanding be yours today and always! May God bless you all sweetly and forever! With much love for you all, Marcy
