LECTURE SESSION ONE (Mon-Fri, 8.30 - 9.30am) - Choose one of these

The WHO WHY WHAT HOW WHERE of the HOLY SPIRIT** - Melanie Edwards MGL Who is the Holy Spirit? Why is the Holy Spirit relevant to me? What is the Charismatic Renewal all about anyway? What are tongues and the other gifts of the Spirit all about? Why would I want to receive these gifts? How can I open myself to receive the Holy Spirit? How can I tap into the power of the Holy Spirit? What difference will it make to my life? What is Baptism in the Holy Spirit all about? How does all this fit into living my Catholic faith? This lecture series is an introduction to the Holy Spirit and will explore questions such as these as well as any others you may have. Through this, we will discover together what it means to live under the grace of the Holy Spirit.

Human Sexuality (according to the teaching of Pope John Paul II) - Fr Ken Barker MGL An exciting presentation of the mystery of human sexuality according to the teaching of Pope John Paul II. Provides a Christian vision for redeemed sexuality, encouraging young men and women to truly appreciate the gift of their bodies, and to gain a vision for purity of heart. Offers insight into the deepest meaning of sexual relationship in marriage as it was originally intended by God. Discusses how the mutual love between a couple in life-long commitment is an icon of the Trinity. Explores the responsibility of married couples through mutual self-giving love to keep their nuptial union always open to the transmission of new life. Opens up the riches of the Pope's teaching on the true meaning of human love, and how sexual intercourse is a way of expressing self-giving love to the other. This is a truly positive, comprehensive vision for human sexuality which will help people today get free of their negative "hang-ups" and dispel their misguided belief that the Church is against sex, or at best frowns upon it.

What’s Your Life For - Adrian Wellspring Young people today usually feel that their life has meaning and fits into a bigger picture, but often have difficulty ‘seeing’ how they fit into that bigger picture. I know Jesus calls me to follow him but where do academic studies, career goals, marriage, friends, etc fit in the purpose of my life? How do I discover what following Jesus means for me in the particular circumstances of my life? These lectures present both Church teaching and some practical information to help discover the purpose of your life. The main themes covered are: young people and Australian culture, the nature of a lay person’s call to discipleship, the connection between spiritual gifts and the unique discipleship of each person and the various tasks of evangelisation.

2

Sacraments: The Holy Mysteries - Elizabeth Reeves The celebration of the Holy Mysteries is at the very heart of worship in the Church as they convey that living communion with the Father in Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. This series of lectures will explain what the Holy Mysteries are by examining sacramental theology, worship and the celebration of the Holy Mysteries, biblical perspectives and historical perspectives. This course develops an understanding of the Sacraments as central to the living out of our Catholic faith.

The Gospel of St Mark - Br Brian Beggs FMS St Mark’s Gospel centres on the Spirit-inspired-story of Jesus’ living his way as the suffering servant of Isaiah. Some 40 years after the resurrection of Jesus, this Gospel invites Mark’s community, devastated by a vicious persecution, to make present Jesus’ Way of the Cross in their daily lives. I, now, in turn, am equally challenged to walk the victorious Way of Jesus to his Cross through the power of the Spirit in me. As Jesus’ call to me: “If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let them renounce themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (Mk 8:34)

Healing in the Church - Sr Margaret Scully RSC What is healing? Why do we need it and why is it so important in the work of building the Kingdom of God? What is the difference between physical healing and spiritual healing? This lecture will look at the theory of inner healing, ancestral and generational healing, repentance, forgiveness and reconciliation and the healing power of the Sacraments.

The Charismatic Gifts in the Life of the Church Today - Costandi Bastoli What does the Church teaches about the Charismatic Gifts? We will study four key scripture passage about the Charismatic gifts (Romans 12:1-8. 1 Peter 4:7-11, Ephesians 4:1-16, 1 Corinthians 12-14 ) We will look at their purpose, how to receive, identify your gifts, and how to use them in the body. Special attention will be given to the gifts of Prophecy, Tongues, Interpretation of tongues, Faith, miracles and any gift of particular interest to those who are attending. We will look at the relationship between Charism and Character. ** Introductory course

LECTURE SESSION TWO (Mon-Fri, 10.30 - 11.30am) Choose one of these

An Introductory Course in Catholic Apologetics** - Fr Geoffrey Coombe MGL Have you ever had someone ask you; Why do you Catholics re-sacrifice Jesus in the mss, when the Bible says that Jesus died once and for all? Or been challenged as to how the Pope can claim to be Infallible, when the church has changed its opinions on Galileo, fasting from meat on Fridays and a number of other things? This course in designed to equip you to give a reasoned and Biblical answer to the questions we as Catholics are often asked by our Protestant brothers and by other people who have serious questions and misunderstandings of what the Catholic Church actually teaches. In a very dynamic and visual presentation you will be able to learn many new things about your faith and have your own understanding strengthened. This course will cover an Introduction to Apologetics, Notes of the True Church, St Peter the First Pope, Infallibility and Bible and /or Tradition?

Women of Grace - Therese Mills MGL “I do want with all my heart what God wants me to be” (St Mary of the Cross, 1889). We invite you (Women only) to come on a new and exciting journey with St Mary of the Cross and the Women of Grace team throughout this week. This lecture series will involve talks, sharings, prayer and chats on topics such as: the dignity of Women; the trials, sufferings & joys of life; healing and all that God is calling us to be as Women. "We need to develop a culture that grants women, in law and in everyday life, the dignity that is theirs by right” Pope Benedict.

Demystifying Evangelisation - Catherine Kennedy The word “evangelisation” can carry a lot of baggage. Think of it and we see images of bible bashing or ridicule and rejection by our friends. So evangelisation gets shoved in the too hard basket in the hope that others with more training or courage will look after it. However, Pope Paul VI wrote that “the Church exists in order to evangelise”. And yes, that means you! In this lecture series we will debunk a lot of the scary myths surrounding evangelisation by studying the awesome teachings of the Church on the subject. We will also examine what the Holy Spirit has in mind by calling us to a New Evangelisation. Prepare to be inspired!

4

His Name Is Mercy; His Way is Forgiveness - Fr Ken Barker MGL This lecture series provides much needed teaching on the gospel way of forgiveness, according to the merciful heart of God. It addresses the deep questions that arise in our hearts when we have been the victims of the unjust actions of others, or when we have been deeply hurt by a betrayal of trust. “Why forgive when a grave injustice has been done against me?” “How can I forgive when they don’t deserve it?” “Does forgiving someone mean I have to forget?” “When I forgive do I have to excuse the one who offended me?” “How can I forgive when I feel hatred in my heart?” “Why has God allowed this to happen to me?” The lectures show the gospel principles that provide a sure pointer towards freedom for all who have agonized with these questions. Stories are offered of those who have found this freedom; they are a light in the darkness, and an inspiration towards the highest calling of any human being – to have mercy and to forgive.

Anatomy of a Miracle: The Importance of the Eucharist and Mary in the Spiritual Life - Paul Elarde & Juliana Vidos In October of 2008 at the shrine in Lourdes, Paul Elarde witnessed Juliana Vidos get out of her wheelchair and walk for the first time in almost 9 years. Leadership in the Gospel of Mark -

Fr Stephen Fletcher MGL

Jesus Christ, as King and servant models the pathway to true leadership for his disciples. This journey through the Gospel of Mark will contrast the worldly view of what it means to be a leader with the radical and powerful one proposed to genuine believers. Come to this lecture series to explore servant leadership through the eyes of Mark, giving a snapshot of some of the principles that can help shape the Christian leaders of our time.

5

On a Collision Course: Science and Faith - Jude Hennessy Is belief in God irrational and unscientific? Are claims of a new generation of atheists that Religion is destined for the scrapheap, valid? This lecture series will examine the basis for belief in God from the perspective of eminent Catholic-Christian thinkers throughout the ages. It will explore the claims of the ‘new atheists’ about belief and provide summative insights and counter arguments to their claims from a reasoned Catholic perspective. It will examine how many of the world’s most renowned scientists and philosophers are ‘changing their minds’ about the existence of God, because the rational scientific evidence is leading them to that conclusion. The lecture series will propose that science and religion are on a collision course, because they are coming closer together in their search for the truth, not getting further apart. It will endeavor to provide simple strategies to lovingly engage in dialogue with individuals who have not heard the valid counter arguments that show belief in a loving God is a ‘safe bet’. ** Introductory course

FIRST SEMINAR (Mon & Tues, 4.00 - 5.30pm) Choose one of these

Healing - Sr Margaret Scully RSC Hurtful life experience and sin leave us with wounds which we carry in our hearts. This can hinder our ability to love and to be loved and holds us back from living the fullest life that God intended for us. A personal encounter with Jesus the Healer means that we are on the way to being made whole. This seminar is a hands-on experience of the power of healing prayer and is a great companion to Sr Margaret’s lecture on Healing in the Church.

Money Matters for Christians $$ - Frances Simon Are you in debt? Do you have trouble managing your mobile phone bill? Do you dream about winning the lottery? Some people think that God and money don’t mix and that it’s not Christian to spend time dealing with money matters. Nothing could be further from the truth. Finance is a necessary part of life and being a responsible steward of all the gifts that God has given us is one of the fundamental callings for a Christian. The way we deal with money is an important witness to our faith. Come to this seminar to talk about God and money, learn some fundamentals of budgeting, finance and saving and gain great tips for being responsible, generous and faithful with our funds.

Embracing Life - Nicole Destro The Catholic Church is often labelled old-fashioned, out-of touch and uncompassionate regarding its teaching on Life Issues such as abortion, contraception, in vitro fertilisation, and euthanasia – are these claims true? Come to this interactive seminar to discover God's marvellous plan for his people that promotes the dignity of every person made in His image.

The Gospel of St Luke - Br Brian Beggs FMS The infancy narrative in the Gospel of Luke is very different from the infancy narrative of Matthew. Both evangelists write for Christians in different house-church communities who have different needs and who live in a different cultural setting. Luke focuses his infancy story on Mary. The evangelist highlights her faith as the “servant of the Lord” as well as the reality that “she treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart” of Jesus as the Messiah and the Son of God (Lk 2:19). Mary is the exemplar of all “those who hear the word of God and put it into practice” (8:21) through the power of the Spirit.

7

SECOND SEMINAR (Thurs & Fri, 4.00 - 5.30pm) Choose one of these

The Gospel of St Luke - Br Brian Beggs FMS There is a particular emphasis in Luke’s Gospel on the role of the Spirit in Jesus’ mission as the Messiah, the Son of God. In fact, through the frequent use of the title Lord for Jesus in Luke, the whole Gospel should be read in the context of the joy of Jesus’ resurrection victory. As well, in the infancy narrative, the wilderness temptation of Jesus, his first visit to Nazareth, and throughout the Gospel the presence of the Spirit in the prayer of Jesus is stressed. Also, the frequent association of joy and power necessary to be vital witnesses to the Word is clear in Chs 10-11. Both stress this key theme in Luke’s narrative, a theme that also characterizes Ch 24 and the opening of Chs 1 & 2 of Acts.

Doing God’s Will or Doing my Will for God? - Fr Steve Fletcher MGL We can learn the art of listening to God and responding to the movements towards God in our lives and resisting those movements away from God. This seminar will help you in responding to God’s action in your life.

A Royal Wedding? Or a Marriage Fit For a Son and Daughter of the King? - Marita Winters This seminar will explore the Catholic teaching on Marriage and Family as well as the reality of trying to live this vision. This is for single people who are interested in exploring the vocation of marriage, as well as those who are in dating. It may also be for married people who want to spend some time reflecting on their vocational journey.

Evangelising the Atheist - Paul Elarde Why do some people believe that God is only an idea? How can we combat the naturalistic worldview promoted by many great universities and the influence of popular culture that declares, "God may exist, but who cares?" How can we evangelize an unbelieving world? In this seminar we will look at how it is possible to reduce to absurdity, the notion that there is no God. In fact, we will see how atheism as a world-view cannot be true because it inevitably leads to contradictions that even atheists cannot live with!

9

Worship, Music & Orange Juice - Rich and Pete Gilmore What is worship? Is it a style of music? Is it a strange ancient act? Or is it at the very core of who we are? More than a song and more than just the strum pattern on your acoustic guitar, worship is the heartbeat of our lives. We all do it all of the time. Right now, as you read this, you are worshipping something. Music is a portrait of something much much bigger. Are you ready for the IMAX version of worship?

Silent meditation - Kelvin Simon ‘Meditation engages thought, imagination, emotion and desire. This mobilization of faculties is necessary in order to deepen our convictions of faith, prompt the conversion of our heart, and strengthen our will to follow Christ’ (Chapter 2708 Catechism of the Catholic Church). In this workshop we will practice 4 types of silent meditation: 1) ‘Observation’ – being alert and attentive 2) ‘Lectio divina’ – listening to the scripture from the heart 3) ‘Sacred words’ – repeating sacred prayers, praying in silent tongues or praying the rosary in silence, and 4) ‘Imagination exercises’ – entering a gospel scene through your imagination and asking questions from Jesus, or just being with him in that scene (Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius of Loyola).

Evangelisation & Cross Culture - Fr Geoffrey Coombe MGL What happens when you find yourself up against cultural barriers in evangelisation? This seminar will examine some of the issues and challenges in cross cultural evangelisation and include some workshop exercises in finding creative ways to communicate cross culturally. It will also look at the issue of cultural baggage that we carry and how to differentiate between what is cultural and true Gospel.
