The Gifts of the Spirit 1 Corinthians 12:1-12 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. 2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. 3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. 4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. 12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

I. The early church was a church of deep expectancy. A. Everywhere the early Christians went, they expected to see a supernatural manifestation of the Spirit of God.

Mark 16:20 20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

II. Soon after the ascension of the Lord, Jerusalem was impacted by a display of a supernatural move of God. A. All those in the upper room were speaking in an unknown tongue. B. Three thousand were added to the church that day. C. People were healed, prophecies came forth, miracles happened, devils were cast out. D. This same power that was at work in the early church is at work in the church today. III. The purpose of this lesson is to place emphasis on the work of the Spirit in the church and it’s proper place. A. Without the operation of the gifts of the spirit in the church, we become just another group gathering together and accomplishing nothing. IV. The apostle Paul taught us, through the scripture, that the things that transpired for the early church belong to us today.

Hebrews 13:8 8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

A. The things of God do not change just because the year does.

V. What are the gifts of the Spirit? Word of Wisdom

Gifts of Healing

Discerning of Spirits

Interpretation of Tongues

A. God gives them and works them. 1. When we understand this, we will not try to take credit for what God does. 2. In order to be used by God, we must always remember...”To God be the Glory.” B. The purpose of God using these gifts in His church is for the betterment of others, to edify others. The Church not necessarily individuals.

Acts 2:1-4 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

1 Corinthians 14:1-14

Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. 2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. 3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. 4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. 5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. 6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? 7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? 8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle? 9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air. 10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification. 11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me. 12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church. 13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

C. This scripture deals with the initial sign of receiving the Holy Ghost. D. These scriptures deal with the gift of tongues in the church AFTER the initial infilling of the Holy Ghost.

1. Paul was dealing with the issue that everyone wanted to come together and speak in tongues...without interpretation. 2. In a group situation, Paul was telling the Corinthian church, it is better to seek to edify the whole. VI. Remember, the gifts of the Spirit are for edification. A. They are operated by God. B. They are to bring glory to God and strength to the church. C. Just because someone is used of God does not make them better than someone else. D. We should desire to be used by God but not at the sacrifice of our love one to another.

1 Corinthians 12:31

1 Corinthians 14:1

31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

1 Corinthians 13:1-4 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. 4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

VII. Here are the standards to gauge the gifts of the Spirit and know if God is really at work or not. A. Doctrine Test: The Spirit will not contradict the Word. B. Character Test: The Spirit will not flow through an unclean vessel. C. Order Test: The Spirit will not manifest itself in an uncontrollable, indecent manner. D. Scrutiny Test: The Spirit will not prevent an evaluation of its nature.

The Gifts of the Spirit (1Co 12:6) And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. (1Co 12:7) But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. (1Co 12:8) For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom Word of wisdom; that is, say some, a knowledge of the mysteries of the gospel, and ability to explain them, an exact understanding of the design, nature, and doctrines, of the Christian religion. Others say an uttering of grave sentences, like Solomon’s proverbs. Some confine this word of wisdom to the revelations made to and by the apostles. To another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; that is the knowledge of mysteries (1Co 2:13): wrapped up in the prophecies, types, and histories of the Old Testament: a skill and readiness to give advice and counsel in perplexed cases. (1Co 12:9) To another faith by the same Spirit; To another faith, by the same Spirit; that is, the faith of miracles, or a faith in t he divine power and promise, whereby they were enabled to trust God in any emergency, and go on in the way of their duty, and own and profess the truths of Christ, whatever was the difficulty or danger. To another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the gift of healing, by the same Spirit; that is, healing the sick, either by laying on of hands, or anointing with oil, or with a word. (1Co 12:10) To another the working of miracles; The efficacies of powers, energēmata dunameōn, such as raising the dead, restoring the blind to sight, giving speech to the dumb, hearing to the deaf, and the use of limbs to the lame, and walking on water. To another prophecy; To another prophecy, that is, ability to foretell future events, which is the more usual sense of prophecy; or to explain Scripture by a peculiar gift of the Spirit. To another discerning of spirits; Power to distinguish between true and false prophets, or to discern the real and internal qualifications of any person for an office, or to discover the inward workings of the mind by the Holy Ghost, as Peter did those of Ananias, Act 5:3.

To another divers kinds of tongues; or ability to speak languages by inspiration. To another the interpretation of tongues: or ability to render foreign languages readily and properly into their own. With such variety of spiritual gifts were the first ministers and churches blessed. (1Co 12:11) But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. (1Co 12:12) For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
