Cup O’ Joe Weekly Reflections by Joseph Zenk, Pastoral Leader We’ve all had it happen to us at one time or another. Perhaps numerous times. Something happens to us and we are never the same. Perhaps it was a defining decision we made that changed the course of our life. Perhaps it was the death of a loved one that left an aching hole in our heart. Or perhaps it was the love of another – a spouse, a child, a parent, a friend – who helped give us a new foundation upon which to stand. Whatever it was, we went forward differently than who and what we had been previously. Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord. It’s a wonderful feast that conjures up images of stables and kings, a child and treasure, kneeling and homage. And all that is well founded. But there is more here. There is seeking and hardship, journey and darkness, emptiness, trust and hope that this longing can be filled with what is found. None of this is known during the journey. It’s only revealed when they encounter that which they had been seeking. It was only in truly seeing the Christ child – in encountering Him! – that their emptiness, their longings, their seekings were filled. And then comes the beautiful line, almost overlooked at the end of the reading: “…they departed for their country by another way.” They were different. They left the stable differently than how they came in – and not just through another door! The encounter they had with Christ invited them to a new place – no differently than the examples I listed above. They went

forward differently than who and what they had been previously. They departed for their country by another way – for they were no longer on the same journey. The love of God they encountered through this child, the plan of God for humanity, the hope for the world they received if only for a tiny glimpse, left them new and changed. How could they return the same way they had come? Life presents this same opportunity to us numerous times. We can embrace it or we can fight it. Truth be told, we probably do both. But just as the Magi had to struggle with hardship and lack of knowing and often live only on trust and hope, so, too, with us. Sometimes the stars that guide us can seem distant and faint, but we must not let that stop us on the journey. This weekend, Ss. Peter & Paul steps into a new future with the dedication and blessing of our new space. It took a great amount of work and planning and generosity to make this happen. And can we be certain what it will do for the parish? The community? The Catholic faith? No. But we journey forward in trust, following the faint and distant star that we trust has been and will continue to lead us. And while there can be pain and hurt in leaving behind the old, we know that at this point and at this time, God is inviting us into someplace new. So we move forward as a parish and depart for our new home by another way. As with the Magi, it promises to be a hope-filled, scary, trusting, uncertain, but Christ centered journey. Is there any other? Blessed Epiphany everyone!

Join us next week as our readings’ focus is: “As disciples, we have been called to witness to Christ before others and to be his holy presence in the world.” As we move back into ordinary time after our Christmas celebrations, we are invited to continue to reflect on the great mystery of God’s presence in our world through Christ, whose birth we just celebrated. That invitation challenges us to conform our lives to his so that we might bear witness to the truth and hope he brings to us, as individuals and as a community of faith.

Resisting Happiness If you did not receive a book this Christmas Season (Resisting Happiness by Catholic author Matthew Kelly), it is one that invites us to look at the patterns and habits of our lives and how we can create true happiness in our lives. Please feel free to take one on your way out of Mass. We hope you will enjoy it and we wish you a most blessed Christmas and a truly Happy New Year! Joint Parish Council Meeting Members of Ss. Divine Savior Catholic School The 8th grade class is nearing their graduation in Spring. It begins this coming week with their class retreat hosted by Roncalli High School. Please remember these students in your prayers. Next Tuesday, January 10, the students will present an Epiphany Enthronement ceremony as part of the introduction to the liturgy. Please join at the 8:00 Mass and then join us for our monthly social which is hosted by Grade 4 this month. Daily Prayer Suggestion Here’s an idea for those Christmas cards, e-cards and pictures you received this Christmas. Stack them and when you say your daily prayer or before meal prayer pick the first card off the pile and pray for that person/family that sent the card. Then put their card on the bottom of the pile. Each day remembering one of those who remembered to send you a greeting is a great way to pray for family, friends and those special people in your life. Young Adults Around the Diocese Volunteers and passionate young adults have made things happen in their parishes and are making a difference.
