The 1911 Census for Horsell Introduction The 1911 census was taken on the night of Sunday 2 nd April 1911.This transcription has been compiled using the www.findmypast.co.uk website. The website includes its own transcription but this is sufficiently inaccurate to make it necessary to check each entry. Every attempt has been made to interpret names and other details correctly but where this has proved impossible a suggestion has usually been made in red as to the actual word. I am indebted to Richard Christophers for having checked and identified certain difficult words using Ancestry co.uk. Although every effort has been made to make this transcription as accurate as possible, it is always wise to check a record before relying on its accuracy. To do this using www.findmypast.co.uk it is necessary to pay whatever charges are required by this commercial website. To find the address in which you are interested you should click Search records then Census, land & surveys and elect to search by address. Enter Horsell under residential place and press search. This should enable you to find the address on the following screens. As has been the case in previous censuses the census is in two Sections each unfortunately having been given the same numbering system 1-334 (first) and 1-315 (second). To help find in which Section a particular address occurs, a list of streets is shown at the beginning of each Section with a note as to the page on which these can be found. Unfortunately sometimes the division between the two Sections runs down the middle of a road as a result of which the street name appears in both lists. This census called for much more information in respect of households than had been required by earlier censuses and moreover required each head of household to complete a form providing that fuller information. Thus the difficulty of interpretation is far greater than it has been with earlier censuses. In the earlier Horsell censuses there had been probably been just two enumerators extracting information. In1911 there were as many different types of handwriting as there were households. The number of rooms occupied by each individual household is shown in blue under the item number of each household. The instruction with regard to rooms is to enter the Number of Rooms in this Dwelling (House, Tenement or Apartment).Count the kitchen as a room but not count scullery, landing, lobby, closet, bathroom; nor warehouse, office, shop. Where * is shown against a particular address this usually means that the house probably has multi-occupancy but this does not mean that the property has been physically divided.

2

There is a column showing the number of years a couple have been married. The number of children born to each marriage together the number of those children still living is shown in green in the format x.y where x is the number born and y the number surviving. N means no child born of the marriage. This particular item seems to have confused many of the householders causing a considerable number of “crossings out”. Addresses have been checked against the Woking News and Mail 1919 Year Book. This publication has helped to confirm the names of occupiers and spellings of house names. The enumerators’ lists of addresses gives the names of uninhabited and non-residential properties which are not subject to the census. This information is shown in mauve on the transcription and helps establish the likely street scene. The entries do not seem always to have been entered in a logical order but this transcription is arranged in the same order as the original and no attempt has been made to correct the order of entries. Two items are worthy of mention, item No.255 in Ferndale Drive, a home for unmarried mothers run by Winchester and then Guildford diocese and item No.266 in The Grove, one boarder who refuses to give any information about herself because she wishes in this way to protest against women not having the vote . There are ten columns in the transcription viz item number address name position including in number of household rooms, children eg head, born and living wife, son

status years age eg married married, single, widow

occupation

county or country of birth

parish or town

Space has necessitated that abbreviations should be used wherever possible and these are largely self explanatory. You should note, however, that lab = labourer, d in l = daughter in law, M = married, S = single, s in l = son in law or sister in law according to sex and w = widow or widower.
