African Impact is a multi-award winning volunteer travel organisation which runs and manages meaningful and responsible volunteer experiences and internship programs throughout Africa. The organisation was founded in 2004 in Zimbabwe, and since then has grown into the Africa leaders in volunteer tourism, having facilitated over 12,000 volunteers and interns in 12 countries across the continent. We are proud to offer fun, safe and structured placements where volunteers understand their contribution to responsible projects run in partnership with local communities and conservation efforts. Our journey so far has been both inspiring and humbling and we will keep pushing the horizons of what volunteering can achieve. in the power of volunteering and have seen the amazing things volunteers can achieve. in Africa and all that this inspiring continent can offer to the world. in the passionate people who work with us and alongside us to create tangible positive impacts and change lives.

To us, volunteering is a two-way thing. It’s not just about the hands-on help and skills that volunteers bring; it’s also about what this amazing continent, its people and its wildlife can give those volunteers in return. The volunteer experiences we offer in Africa are based on three key points: 1) volunteers having an amazing time and being given opportunities to be able to experience many things Africa has to offer; 2) volunteers learning as much as they can about local history, culture and wildlife and soaking up the essence of our country/continent; and 3) supporting local communities and conservation efforts through education and hands-on help.

CHAT presently reaches underserved poor communities in 10 counties, providing integrated services usng a `population Health & Environment (PHE) approach - with a focus on distributing an innovative family planning project which has a strong component of ecological sensitisation. Also reproductive health services, basic curative, integrated HIV/AIDS & TB services all act as ‘entry points’ to this important intervention. Founded in 1999, the CHAT Mobile Clinic successfully treats and educates annually an average of fifty thousand underserved Kenyans. Consisting of nurses, a driver and three Land Rovers, some camels and back packs – and working alongside grass roots partners (who provide mobilisation and sensitisation)targeting the most needy. People living in the areas served are faced with ever compounding issues such as: lack of access to family planning choices, which is resulting in ever deepening poverty; famine; lack of clean or enough water; land degradation due to no planning systems, and poor rangeland management. Uncontrolled population growth resulting in untold suffering such as infanticide, unsafe abortions (Kenya has the highest abortion rate in the world), school girl pregnancies; lack of adequate education facilities; unemployment; spreading HIV/AIDS & TB; insufficient medical facilities and insecurity. The Mobile Clinic’s founder and chief facilitator, Shanni Wreford-Smith, is desperately in need of assistance in her tasks of heading up the formidable force that these clinics are and the impact that they have on the local communities. Shanni is seeking administrators and fundraisers to assist her, and who are willing to travel out and camp for 5 – 12 days from time to time with the mobile clinics to gather data and prepare reports. Camel mobiles are usually out camping for one full month. Experienced and qualified medical staff who are able to travel out into the field will be a great help to the teams on the ground and be involved in - documenting information on the clinics, documenting progress reports on the medical teams and statistics from the field and supporting the trained CHAT medical staff in their various duties and tasks at base and in the field

For doctor volunteers we have recently decided that the most efficient way for them to work with the communities, so that there is an immediate benefit for all, would be that we employ a locum nurse to work with them, as interpreting takes a lot of time and this allows them time to get used to the environment they will be working in. Many of the communities are busy and they only get the benefit of the mobile services on an average of once every 3 months, so by having this extra nurse for the volunteer means that no one is hindered in their jobs and this leaves the usual CHAT staff to get on with their jobs undeterred. The locum nurse’s salary for the month will cost the volunteer an additional USD $ 472 per month. Please be advised that in order to use your skills in Kenya we may need to get “special permission” for you to work as a doctor in Kenya. This will cost you an additional USD $170 on top of your project fee.

Travel and camping with the Mobile Clinics either by vehicle, camels, and accompanying ‘back pack’ nurses Offer choices to communities lacking access to health resources through Reproductive Health services with a focus on family planning that includes an innovative ecological awareness component included, HIV/AIDS services, TB and basic curative health care Gain experience in the medical field by working closely with nurses and community health workers who are Community Own Resource Persons (CORPs) and become CHAT’s grassroots partners Experience the phenomenon that is the wildlife-filled plains of Laikipia, starting from the foot of Mt Kenya whilst you travel Learn some of the fascinating intricacies of the Maasai, Pokot, Samburu, Turkana, Rendille, and other rural often nomadic Kenyan cultures

The most direct route is to fly in to Nairobi, where you will be met by one of our representatives, and then transferred by taxi to Nanyuki where there is an opportunity to shop for your groceries etc, before continuing to Shanni’s house which is 34 kms beyond Nanyuki: here you will be met by Shanni, or one of her team members. There are also daily flights up to Nanyuki from Wilson Airport in Nairobi.

Arranging your visa is your responsibility and the information we provide is to serve as a guideline only. We advise that you confirm this information with the embassy / consulate of the country that you will be visiting in your home country before departure. Please note that you will need to apply for a tourist / holiday visa in order to join us on this programme.

Prior to your trip you will need to arrange medical insurance which will give you full cover for any medical requirements which may arise during your trip, including cover for full air evacuation in the unlikely event that this is necessary. Your medical cover also needs to include repatriation. If you do not already have a company that you are happy to use to take out a policy with, we suggest World Nomads or Mind the Gap Year, who offer comprehensive medical and travel insurance. Please be sure to check your policy carefully to ensure that it does cover activities which you are likely to participate in.

You will be comfortably accommodated in a self-contained banda (or tents when out with the mobiles) overlooking the plains of Laikipia, on Shanni’s family property, which is surrounded by ranch land and a wildlife conservancy. These bandas are solar powered and can have wi-fi internet access if volunteering for at least a month. It is also likely that you will spend time in the Nanyuki administrative office and/or out in the field with the mobile clinic, in which case you will be doing some very basic camping and experiencing basic Kenyan cuisine together with the field teams. You will assist mainly in administration and fundraising tasks including: Documenting information and data on the clinics Preparing proposals to present to potential donors Preparing reports for current donors Taking photos, video footage and Case Stories to record events at the clinics and to be made into promotional documentaries and for use as fundraising tools Possibly edit previously gathered footage Preparing write-ups and descriptions of Communities Heath Africa Trust (CHAT) innovative strategies and activities for their respective websites From time to time you will need to travel out and camp for 5 – 10 days at a time into the field with the mobile clinics to gather data and prepare reports. Camel mobiles may be camping for one full month – this may happen 4 times a year The candidates for this placement should bear in mind that a very active social life will not be available to them whilst in Kenya. Much time will be out in the field, gathering data, preparing reports etc, and individuals who are comfortable leading a fairly quiet life for a few months are more suitable to this position. This is not to say your life will be dull, as travelling through Samburu and other mobile community villages, and experiencing the amazing wildlife in the Laikipia region will be an opportunity of a lifetime.

Before your arrival at the project you will receive further information relating to your program, as well as hints on cultural aspects to be aware of and final pre-departure information. Also before and upon your arrival in the Laikipia area you may be briefed more extensively by Shanni and her team, with reference to a basic understanding of local cultures; specifics of your project and its daily life; etc. It is important to remember that Africa has an unpredictable environment – so plans do not always happen and if they do, it is not always in the way expected! Your flexibility, sense of humour and having an open mind will be vital to your enjoyment and fulfilment in this project.
