WELCOME Hello and welcome to Rioja 10 x 10!   Rioja 10 x 10 is a brand new initiative which celebrates the quality and diversity of Spain’s flagship wine region. The tasting brings together 100 outstanding Rioja wines in 10 different categories, with each wine selected as being among the best of its kind.   On 25th September, Wines from Rioja brought together a panel of 12 of the UK’s top Rioja experts, drawn from all sectors of the industry. Under the guidance of our co-chairs, Masters of Wine Tim Atkin and Sarah Jane Evans, the panel tasted their way through 400 wines, whittling them down to the final 100 presented here today.   From traditional to modern, red, white, and rosé, from Rioja’s signature Tempranillo through to lesser-known varieties such as Maturana, this collection offers a broad snapshot of this vibrant and ever-evolving region.   We hope you enjoy Rioja 10 x 10, and we look forward to hearing your feedback on the wines.   ¡Salud! MEET THE JUDGES Presenting the chairs of the Rioja 10 x 10.

TIM ATKIN MW

Tim Atkin MW is an award-winning journalist, and is a member of the Gran Orden de Caballeros de Vino and the Cofradía del Vino de Rioja.

The 10 x 10 tasting highlighted the quality as well as the growing diversity of Spain’s most famous wine region and was a pleasure to judge. All of the categories featured a number of excellent wines, but the ones that really stood out for me were the “generics”, Reservas and oaked whites. It was also a pleasure to see grape varieties other than Tempranillo featuring in the final line-up, whether as components in blends or as varietal wines. There’s nothing wrong with Tempranillo – it’s Spain’s best red grape, after all, but people tend to forget that Rioja also grows Garnacha, Mazuelo, Graciano and a little bit of Maturana Tinta. The other thing that stood out for me was less reliance on oak in many of the wines and better fruit expression, showing the range of aromas and flavours that Rioja’s subregions and different terroirs can produce. Lastly, it was great to see some familiar (at least to me) names among the wineries seeking representation. Let’s hope they will be imported here soon.

Diversity. That sums up our tasting. A region of roughly 50 miles wide and 30 miles deep submitted over 400 wines of so many different types. After narrowing the wines down to just 10 x 10 – and many thanks to the panels for their work - several categories stood out. Reservas were up there with the best, and so too the generics, the wines that prefer simply to declare their vintage without following the specific DOCa regulations on ageing. For value for money there was little to match the Crianzas. These are short on ageing, but definitely long on complexity and drinking pleasure. Take a look at the Gran Reservas and their general trend for fresher, brighter fruit. Don’t miss the nonTempranillo reds: plenty of interest here – Graciano and Garnacha are well known, but there’s also Maturana Tinta and Mazuelo (Carignan) to try. All in all, a tempting snapshot of Rioja in 2015. Saludos!

MEDIEVO BLANCO ECOLÓGICO In recent years the focus has been on the Verdejo variety in Rueda and the investments made by Rioja’s wineries there. The 10 x 10 tasting showed it’s time to return to Rioja and the much-maligned Viura grape. Cool fermentation and stainless steel have emphasising their youth and freshness.
