We are a family run company in Langenlois in the Kamptal, in Lower Austria. We cultivate an area of 45 hectars. In our winery the emphasis lies on the Grüner Veltliner, which is about 50 percent of all wines. Lower Austria is well-known for the Grüner Veltliner and it is also the strength of our winery. The variety of the Grüner Veltliner can be found in different styles: from a light summer wine to powerful, voluminous late harvests and also from the sparkling wine to the sweet wine. Our winery is famous for the sparkling wine production. We make sparkling wines according to the traditional bottle fermenting method. Each of our sparkling wines, is it the Grüner Veltliner, the Riesling, the Muskateller, the Sauvignon Blanc or the Zweigelt, has its own characteristic.

Our family’s wine-growing estate has a very long tradition going back to 1660 when it was first mentioned. By vinification we mean our destination to produce top quality vintage wines which are typical for the local climate and soil of the Kamptal area. Due to long hours of sunshine and cool nights our wines are fruity and of fairly high alcohol content. Moreover, a subtly diversified tartness, which is caused by different types of soil and forms of viniculture, characterizes our wines. In our vinyards you can even find gravel and preexisting rocks as well as loess, which is typical of this area.

The Leth winery, one of the leading wineries in the Wagram region, is located in Fels. 40 hectares are run by family Leth, directly on the terraces of the Wagram hillside. The deep loess soils are excellently suited for Grüner Veltliner, half of the area under vine is planted with this variety. Wines are offered in two ranges: the "Klassik" range made in typical Austrian style with crisp fruit and piquancy and the "Lagenreserven" that stand out for their intens aromas and flavors with a focus on individual terroir character.

The winery Markowitsch, has in a very short time to jump into the elite Austrian winemakers managed. Only by striving Uncompromising quality could be achieved this goal, which with the award "Winemaker of the Year 1999" by the prestigious magazine Falstaff was crowned. At about 38 ha vineyard, 75% red wine and white wine generates 25%. The red wines dominate Zweigelt, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Blaufränkisch and of white Grüner Veltliner wines, Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc. To meet the international demand for the latest Topwines are still additional 40 hectares of grapes under contract winemakers’ grafted guidelines strictly controlled.

The family winery Tement is situated in Berghausen, Southern Styria, on a small and impressing mountain plateau above the single vineyard Zieregg. Visitors and guests will enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view of the neighboring country Slovenia as well as of parts of Eastern Styria. Winery Tement aims to make two different styles of wine at the estate. Under the appellation „Steirische Klassik“ one finds those wines that are fresh and fruity, with lots of varietal character. They display the typical style of their grape variety (or grape varieties) within the context of the vintage from which they come, they are fairly light in alcohol and, for the most part, they mature in stainless steel tanks. They are the type of wines for which Styria has always been well known, and indeed their style is also in perfect line with current tastes. The “Steirische Klassik STK” denomination is protected and may only be used by certain wine producers. The other style is represented by the wines from selected vineyards and is called "Terroir and single vineyard wines". These high-quality terroir wines are obtained from fully matured grapes from most important single vineyards. They are fermented slowly and mature in large or small oak barrels until they are ready for bottling. Terroir wines exhibit independence as well as area-typical character and show great ageing potential.

The traditional Sonnhof courtyard dating back to the 16th century - with its 700-year-old natural cellar labyrinth - is undoubtedly one of Austria's most impressive wineries. As founding members of "Traditionsweingüter Österreichs" the Jurtschitsch brothers cultivate 69 hectares of prime vineyard sites around Langenlois, primarily on barren stony or loess terraces. Compost and green manure only have been used to fertilize the soil since the 1970s, with the goal of maintaining and promoting the ecological balance in the vineyards. Since 2009 the vineyard management is certified according to the controlled organic methods. As a result, the grapes have ideal conditions for producing white, red and sweet wines with the distinctive characteristics of their vintage and location.

The history of Klosterneuburg Monastery and its wine estate begins in 1114. The winery cultivates 108 hectares of vineyards today. Klosterneuburg is situated near the river Danube, 10 kilometres north of Vienna, and owns vineyards in selected top locations in Klosterneuburg, Vienna, Gumpoldskirchen and Tattendorf. The various soils and the different microclimates in these 4 regions provide for the possibility to cultivate each grape variety in the ideal terroire. Winzer Krems is one of the most significant producers of estate bottled quality wine in Austria. Its origins go back to the oldest wine growers association of central Europe founded in 1447. Until today WINZER KREMS guarantees the highest quality standard and maintains wine as a valuable cultural asset. According to this tradition the grapes are still exclusively handpicked. Winzer Krems specializes in two unique Austrian grape varieties: Grüner Veltliner (white) and Blauer Zweigelt (red). State-of-the-art equipment is used to extract the juice most carefully by pneumatic presses and to ferment under controlled temperature. The results are fine fruity wines with pronounced varietal character and pureness.

The Alphart family has been making wine since 1762 and their love for the vines and the winemaker's craft is revealed in the character of every bottle. Healthy, hand-picked grapes are the basis of expressive and harmonious wines. The family’s vineyards are located at the heart of the Thermenregion, wrapped around the edge of the Vienna Woods. These sun-rich slopes, with their brown-earth and limestone soils, lend the wines both elegance and minerality. A gentle handling of the grape material in the cellar is the logical extension of the attention given to the vines throughout the year and allows the elegance and fine fruit notes of the grapes to find expression in the finished wines.

The founders of this first Austrian premium wine brand were white wine experts F.X.Pichler from the Wachau, Manfred Tement from Styria. The third director in the project was the well respected and successful Négotiant éleveur Tibor Szemes from Pinkafeld in the south of Burgenland. The story is that Horitschon was once called Arachon (ara-kon) in 1549 AD, which means over there by the oak trees in an ancient Slavonic dialect. Twenty-five winegrowers supply their best Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, Cabernet and Merlot grapes. Winemaker Gregor Wolf from the Vereinte Winzer Cooperative in Horitschon, is responsible for vinification and the maturation of the 400 French oak 225 litre barriques. After the unexpected death of Tibor Szemes in 2001, his widow Illa has taken the role of trying to fill a big gap. Without ever having aspired to it, Tibor Szemes memory lives on in the wines, which have a cellaring potential of up to 10 years and beyond. The new Arachon Barrique Cellar was officially opened in August 2003, and boasts almost 5000 square feet of climate controlled barrel rooms, a state of the art bottling machine and the opportunity to hold back an ample amount of older vintages in perfect conditions, as well as a modern seminar and tasting room for up to 50 people.

The K+K Kirnbauer winery is situated on top of a hill dirctly in the vineyards of Deutschkreutz overlooking the Blaufränkischland. The family-owned winery is run by Walter, Irmgard, Markus and Alexandra Kirnbauer. The extraordinary micro-climate and soil conditions dominating the Blaufränkischland are predestined to produce unique terroir-influenced top reds. Prerquisites for the creation of exceptional grapes are set already in the vineyards. The most popular wine of the estate is DAS PHANTOM, a red blend consisting of Blaufränkisch, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah which was matured for 18 months in french barrique. Another popular rarity of K+K is GIRMER. This wine (a Zweigelt from a 1960! planted vineyard) was also matured for 18 months in barrique. The specialty is origin of the wood for the barriques – it is originated in our own woods. The FOREVER is the high-end wine of the estate – it is a cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which was matured in barriques for 36 months. Length of the finish and ageability of this wine are determining the name of this wine - … simply FOREVER.

The wine-growing estate Müller-Grossmann is situated in Furth-Palt, close to the famous monastery Göttweig and belongs to the Austrian wine-growing area “Kremstal”. Helma Müller-Grossmann manages 10 hectares of vineyards in this region.The main target of the wine-grower is the production of nature-oriented and high-quality products. The roots for this are given in the „workshop under a free sky“ – in the vineyards, which are worked gently and in consideration of climate, floor and region. The wines get the fine finishing in the cellar and attain her individuality through this – the handwriting of the wine-grower.

The Schmelz Winery is situated in the small winemaking village Joching where it has been cultivating wines for five generations. The eleven vineyard hectares strech a length of 6 kilometers from Wösendorf to Unterloiben. The Wines are influenced by varying microclimatic influences. Vineyard soils differ as well and range from loess to gravel to sandy primary rock, which Riesling adores. Grüner Veltliner makes up about 60 % of the vineyards area followed by Riesling at 30 %. Sauvignon blanc and Gelber Muskateller round out the assortment. The Schmelz Winery is a founding member of the Vinea Wachau Association. Hans Schmelz was awarded the prestigious title "Vinter of the year" by Falstaff Magazine in 2005.

The winery is mainly known for its authentic red wines but Josef Umathum also presses some very fascinating white wines. He has revived the original, pannonic, white grape variety Lindenblättriger in the Burgenland and the rare varieties of Gelber Traminer and Pinot gris are also being cultivated. The Austrian red wine varieties of Zweigelt, St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch make up about 85 percent of the 30 hectares under cultivation. On both banks of Lake Neusiedl a wide range of different soils are cultivated including slate, lime, clay and pebble. The most important sites are Ried Hallebühl, Vom Stein, Haideboden and Kirschgarten. The vineyard operates in clear structures, according to Demeter biodynamic guidelines.

Once upon a time.....this is how a fairy tale usually begins. Yet for some, real life is often a fairy tale, especially for Marion and Manfred Ebner-Ebenauer. Once upon a time, there was a young man from Weinviertel, who grew up in an old wine-growing family, and was deeply rooted with age-old vintner traditions. He is of calm nature, considerate, serene. After graduating from the wine management course in Krems, he meets a young Viennese maiden; she shines with energy, having already completed formal winemaking education, and taken a number of work-placements abroad. At the tender age of twenty, she was already successful as a wine negociant with her Melusine brand. Nikolaihof is member of the DEMETER association and works biodynamic since 1971. Remains of a Roman fort and an early Christian Agapit basilica are to be found on the estate, as well as a later monastic chapel dedicated to St Nikola. Nikolaihof, owned by the Saahs family since 1894, has orchards, woodlands and fields as well as 22ha of vineyards, were mainly Riesling and Grüner Veltliner are grown, with small quantities of Muskateller, Traminer and Neuburger. The wines develop very well, yields are low and we adhere strictly to biodynamic guidelines. This philosophy carries over to the simple biodynamic methods employed in the cellar. The grapes are harvested by hand, fermented with indigenous yeast in oak casks, matured without additives, and bottled on "fruit days" during a waxing moon. ORIGIN

A thousand year old monastery has revived its winemaking with help of Austrian wine guru Fritz Miesbauer. Stift Göttweig, a Benedictine community, has 26ha of vines in the Wachau and Kremstal wine regions, had previously leased out its production to nearby winery Weingut Dr. Unger. This year’s vintage is the first to be produced for the monastery’s own label since 1987. Its vineyard consists mainly Grüner Veltliner and Riesling varietals which are now being vinified by Miesbauer. Miesbauer forged his reputation in transforming the fortunes of Freie Weingärtner Wachau wine cooperative and the Stadt Krems winery, which he manages. Beginning with the 2006 vintage, all Stift Göttweig wines will be vinified by Miesbauer and cellar master Leopold Figl at Wein.

SCHLOSS GOBELSBURG is the oldest winery in the Danube area Kamptal with a documented viticultural history dating back to the 12th century, when Cistercian monks from Burgundy started to work their first vineyards in the area. Gobelsburg has been run by Michael Moosbrugger (Falstaff Winemaker of the Year 2006, Golden glass Sweden 2007) since 1996.Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are the winery’s most important varieties. Aside from the classic fruity and spicy wines, the winemaker’s primary focus is on the different types of soil, as reflected in single-variety wines which are produced. In a new development, attention has turned to production methods from the winery’s rich history. Weingut Dürnberg is managed by winemaker Christoph Körner together with his friends and partners Matthias Marchesani and Georg Klein. With approximately 50 hectares of vineyards in and around Falkenstein, this winery is without a doubt amongst those estates in Austria producing region-typical white wines. Located one hour by car north of Vienna, Falkenstein´s vineyards lie 200 meters higher than the overall surrounding wine region, and this means they have a special climate. With the vineyards set high and the valley protected from strong westerly winds, there are several advantages to be reaped. Thanks to the air currents, the slopes are well-ventilated and therefore protected against unwanted frosts in the spring and fall seasons. Moreover, the hot summer days cool down in the evenings by up to 20 degrees, therefore the fresh character and good acidity balance are retained in the grapes. At the same time, the physiological ripeness can steadily progress and, at the beginning of October, fully ripe, healthy grapes can be harvested. Ultimately, complex, balanced and aromatic wines that always reveal a tinge of coolness and freshness are the fine result.

Our family’s estate is located in the Kremstal area. The vineyards (75 hectare) reside in the hills around the benedictine monastery Stift Göttweig and extend upstream the Danube valley to the Wachau. The winery was founded in 2003 by Rainer Wess. From its beginning it was the goal to produce Grüner Veltliner and Riesling which would be among the best of the Wachau Valley but with a very personal style and philosophy. Today the winery has a high reputation and the wines are exported in more than 20 countries. Last year the winery found its new home in an ancient cellar of a monastery right in the famed Sandgrube Vineyard in Krems. A new - gravity flow - grape reception was added to the old building to ensure the most gentle possibility to process the grapes.

The Hiedler winery, operated by Ludwig and María Ángeles Hiedler, has a rich tradition since being founded in 1856. The energetic vintner has strives for the highest possible physological ripeness from his 30 hectares of vineyards. A couple of years ago he introduced the concept of spontaneous fermentation, without using sulphur, enzymes and must fining step by step with such a huge success.The long contact with the yeast and a later date for the filling into the bottle, guarantee delicate, fruity mineral as well as deep and powerful wines that are suitable for storage. Hiedler has placed Grüner Veltliner in sandy loess soils and riesling in criystalline slate and primary rocks. The wines remain authentic and focused on terroir.

Pepi Tesch is not one to blow his own horn, but he is certainly one of the catalysts of the development of red wine in Austria. At the end of the 1970s and beginning of the 1980s, he and his brother Hans captured the wine public’s attention with their Blaufränkisch. For many years his main efforts were dedicated to this position with the Winzerkeller Neckenmarkt wine cooperative. While his grapes back then were sourced mostly from the Hochäcker vineyard in Horitschon, today they are sourced only from Hochberg in Neckenmarkt, which is certainly more than logistically advantageous. For the last decade, the name Tesch and in particular the Tesch wines, have been on everyone`s lips. Pepi`s wife Helene manages the vineyards where her natural affinity to the environment is a noticeable attribute. In the past years, their son Josef Christian has been fully integrated in the winery and has taken over responsibility for vinification, although Pepi`s efforts and years of experience remain in demand. The Tesch family is dedicated to tradition and authentic Mittelburgenland wine culture and thus to the variety Blaufränkisch. Blaufränkisch Classic is vinified un stainless steel; Hochberg and Kreos mature in used oak casks, and Titan and Selection mature up to 24 month is new Blaufränkisch masterpiece called Patriot for a befriended Hotelier in Sölden. Admittedly, the definition of styles appears deceivingly simplified, but who reveals all of their special secrets in the very fist moment?

The rise of this legendary red wine estate began in the early 1960s. Hans Igler, the visionary pioneer, spearheaded a crusade for quality by reducing varietal diversity and introducing barrique-aging for top qualities. His winery was among the first to produce premium reds which soon gained an excellent reputation in Austria´s top gastronomy. Since Hans Igler´s death, his daughter Waltraud and her husband Wolfgang Reisner have been looking after the business. The home of the Igler vines lies south of Lake Neusiedl at the foot of the Ödenburger Gebirge. The rieds are located on sheltered sites embedded in sandy loam and gravely soils. One of the specialities is the Blaufränkisch from the top ried Hochberg.

This family-run winery cultivates about 30 acres of vineyards in and around the village of Loiben. Nearly a third of these are planted in stone-terraced sites. In addition to the main varieties Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, Gelber Muskateller and Gelber Traminer are especially dear to the family. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are completing the assortment. The best known crus are Schutt, Loibenberg, Kellerberg and Kreutles, and, in the nearby Kremstal, Pfaffenberg. Amongst classical, dry Wachau wines, dessertwines from the elegant style of Auslese wines to highly concentrated TBA's are produced, since the weather conditions allow. All Smaragd-type of wines are bottled and launched after aging in old, wooden casks, not before September of the following year.

The winery Josef Jamek is situated in the picturesque Valley Wachau along the Danube river. On 25 hectares the Jamek family is cultivating mainly Riesling and Grüner Veltliner on extremely steep terraces, dominated by different types of primary rock soils. Those soils, in combination with special climatic conditions, are the reason for the very specific style of Jamek wines. Josef Jamek, named the "Doyen" of Austrian viticulture, was the first winemaker in the country focusing on dry, varietal naturally produced wines in the 1960s! Wines should be easy to drink was his dogma. His heirs are combing today his philosophy with modern techniques, knowledge and respect for nature, resulting in crystal clean authentically wines. Those wines are perfect partners for nearly every type of food, what can be verified in the restaurant of the Jamek family opened 1912! In the cozy atmosphere there regional specialties creating a harmony with the Jamek wines.

The vineyards are partially located on the hill terraces of the Kremstal, on the fringes of the Bohemian grounds and in a river valley. However, the vineyards of the estate are spread in different locations. After extensive reconstruction, the Nigl winery now utilises primarily steel tanks for vinification and maturing of its wines. From the substantial selection of Veltliner, the elegant “Privat Senftenberger Piri" and the noble, rich with extracts “Alte Reben” (old vines) are worth mentioning. A favourite over the years has been the Riesling from the Hochäcker vineyard, which optimally reflects its soil over bed rock. It is generally accepted that Martin knows how to make great Veltliner and Riesling.

My approach in winegrowing is to preserve and cultivate the characteristic grapes of our region around the Lake Neusiedl and capture its nature in a bottle of wine. The unique combination of insolation, soil and the lakes' influence bears wines of outstanding quality. Every sip opens all winelovers the potential of the Neusiedl area. You seem to feel the 300 sunny days a year which brought my grapes to perfect maturity level. We tread a typical regional wine with excellent ageing potential. Straightforward and clear. These wines can be enjoyed from the youth to maturity. The focus is mainly on production of autochtonous wine grapes, in the region of Lake Neusiedl. The wines are usually expanded varietal to preserve the unique character of the grape.

artisan (Engl.): from the Italian word „artigiano“, which is based on the Latin word „artire“, meaning „instruct in the arts“. Artisanal production is our commitment to the traditional-handcrafted way of working in the vineyards and to the art of the winemaker to vinify his grapes while maintaining the greatest respect for nature. This way of working produces expressive wines with the true taste of our terroir. Terroir refers to all factors having an influence on the type of wine made in a defined area. Usually soil, exposure and climate are considered among these factors, but the intervention of man should also be included here. Sustainable viticulture is our strategic approach in optimizing grape quality. Integral piece is vineyard surveillance in terms of pests and beneficial organisms as well as the evaluation of our cellar operations. Within our integrated cultivation of the vineyards, we apply a combination of biological, mechanical and chemical procedures in respect of recent scientific research. Due to this mixture, our intervention on the environment is minimized in terms of CO2 output. All non-avoidable CO2-emissions are compensated by Climate Austria for Austrian Climate protection projects. From about five hectares we are vinifying white and red wines in three different ranges. The PURE range wines are fresh´n fruitdriven, easydrinking whites and reds for everyday. The HALBTURN range are barrel aged wines with depth and ageing potential. Perfect partners for good food. The ARTISAN is our flagship wine. It will last for ages.

For generations the estate was committed to viniculture in Horitschon. Only red grape varieties were cultivated on 34 hectars of vineyards in the best locations. In order to produce wines of outstanding quality the utmost care and rigorous quantity limitations were appilied. The architecture of the estate integrates new with tradition. As the company dates back to 1857 and still is owned by a family member, Kattus is one of the most prestigious producers of sparkling wines in Austria. Tradition, quality and innovation are the values that have always shaped the long company history of the House of Kattus. The company founder began in 1857 with wine, the import of Veuve Clicquot Champagne and spirits, and supplied imperial and royal courts throughout Europe with caviar from his own production site in the Caspian Sea. He was succeeded by his son Johann Nepomuk, a great wine connoisseur and the initiator of the sparkling wine production in this company. Kattus produces his range of high quality sparkling wines méthode champenoise and lower alcohol products under the name “Kattus Frizzante” various flavours. The base wines, primarily racy Grüner Veltliner and elegant Welschriesling from vintners who have been suppliers to Kattus for generations. Maria Polsterer-Kattus herself is on hand to assist her experienced master blenders with the assemblage, in keeping with an old tradition of the house of Kattus.

Two aspects are responsible for this: One of them is the consistency and strength in all wine categories, offering regularly high quality with dry white wines, highly profiled red wines and sweet wines. On the otherhand, Georg Stiegelmar has understood to draw attention from foreign experts and trade publications with „uncountable“ awards against tough international competition. Highlight of the international rewards was the presentation of the „Robert Mondavi World Wine Trophy“ for the winemaker of the year, which was presented for the overall winemaking by the „International Wine & Spirit Competition“ in London. Equally worth mentioning is that out of six submitted Stiegelmar examples, four achieved the note „excellent“ by the Institute of Masters of Wine, which will be displayed on the labels of outstanding wines in the future.

In the village of Donnerskirchen, where their ancestors started to make wine as early as 1698, the Sommer family has dedicated its life to wine making. Building upon this longstanding tradition wine maker Leo Sommer and his wife Silvane have set new standards. The family cultivates 30 hectares of vineyard area on the south-east facing slopes of the Leithagebirge. The perfect symbiosis of climate, soil and vine combined with nature and an innovative cellar technique characterizes the unmistakable wines. The predominantly soil is slate, which allows the production of minerally fruity white and powerfully tasty red wines. Grüner Veltliner is the number one grape of the estate and matures in four variations. Aromatic varietals especially Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling benefit of the cool nights during the ripening season. Certain micro-climatic conditions and primary rock soil let the traditional Austrian grape varieties Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt develop to fruit-concentrated and spicy red wines with distinct character.

In 1919 founded the family business on 1.3 hectares of land. In the years 1946 to 1958, the wine-growing area was extended to 3.5 hectares. The wine produced was sold directly from the barrel at the ‘Buschenschank’, the wine-tavern. Currently we produce 11 varieties of wine on an area of 9 hectares. We achieve only low yields on our sand and gravel soil, but the favourable Pannonian climate assures the high quality of our wines. Short pruning, selective cultivation of soil and terrain, as well as artificial irrigation during dry periods, are the measures we take to guarantee the consistently high quality of our wines. During pressing, and in the wine cellar, we pay careful attention to the gentle handling of the grapes and the young wine. Then, finally the wine matures slowly in barrels or in tanks, waiting to be enjoyed the wine-tavern.

Since 1859, five generations of the EHN family have been involved in high-quality winemaking. Today Michaela and her brother Ludwig EHN continue this family tradition. Together, they cultivate 14 hectares of the best vineyards in the surroundings of Langenlois, close to the Danube valley. To produce an excellent "Qualitätswein" the appropriate conditions must exist in the vineyard. A wine can only be as good as the vineyard it comes from. We take great care to ensure that each varietal is planted on the appropriate soil and location. The trunks of all freshly planted vines are spaced every 70 - 80 cm to maximise the warmth of the soil. The harvest only starts once the grapes have reached their physiological maturity. In addition, we apply strict yield management, which is far below the legally prescribed volumes, to ensure top quality. The winery and the wine shop are situated in the center of Langenlois just a few steps from the Kornplatz, the main square.

Now that they have graduated from High school they are continuing their education. For 6 years Lisa Lawrence, winemaker from New Mexico, assists Heidi in all fields of the wine-estate. Hans from Hajos in the Great Hungarian Plain is responsible for all the tractor work in the vineyards. As he is a grower himself in Hungary he knows the work. We are member of the ”Cercle Ruster Ausbruch”, which is an association of winemakers in Rust who concentrate in the improvement of the Ruster Ausbruch. Heidi is also engaged in some “wine & women” projects throughout the world. She has contacts to many female winemakers in other countries and cooperates with some of them.

A great deal of thanks is owed to Fritz, because his wines have propelled Viennese wines in general to a high level of demand as well as image. For the past twenty years, Fritz Wieninger has developed a quality-oriented winery from a traditional, winegrowing business with the accompanying heurigen. The winery is found at the base of the Bisamberg and comprises a total of 50 hectares. Today he produces white, red, and desert wines for top-class restaurants throughout the world. “I decided to take the path of quality and professionalism quite early on. Also important for me is to translate the Viennese element into the wine. We are an urban and cosmopolitan winery, where tradition also maintains a place of great importance” says Fritz Wieninger about his successful business philosophy. With fertile vineyards on the left and right banks of the Danube, Wieninger has available sandy and loamy soil, as well as extremely calcium rich shell-limestone weathering grounds—both excellent bases for wine. “I try to use the numerous facets of my grape material,” Fritz says. “For me, to show the differences in terroir and vintage, and to get the character of the vineyard into the bottle – this is my greatest challenge.”

Winemaker Clemens Strobl has devoted his efforts to wines from all over the world for more than 20 years. In 2008 he fulfilled one of his lifetime dreams by laying the foundation stone of his own small winemaking business. The first wine he released was the "Rosé Sagenhaft". It was marketed under the Edition Sagenhaft 2011, which also included such big names as Anton Bauer, Gernot Heinrich, Gerhard Kracher and Hans Reisetbauer. In the autumn of 2011 the “Weinmanufaktur Clemens Strobl” began selling its wines in very small volumes. Today, 13 hectares (29,7 acres) of land are now cultivated by the winery and its production has already gone up to around 30,000 bottles a year, with the aim of further increasing production.

The Nine Austrian Wine Styles (Categories)
CAT 1: Sparkling wine Austria produces first-class sparkling wines – a tradition that goes back to the 19th century. Specialists in the bubbly sector – from light Frizzante to hand-riddled premium sparking wine – extend from private “manufacturers” to larger wineries.
CAT 2: White wine - light and fresh This range of Austrian white wines are lively, vibrant, and fit perfectly to any season: from the “Junger Österreicher” to ” Steirischer Junker”; from a light Grüner Veltliner, such as a Steinfeder from the Wachau, to a delicate, spicy Welschriesling from Styria; and there are those “tasty” Schmeckerten with low alcohol, like Muskateller or Müller-Thurgau.
CAT 3: White wine - classic & dry Austria´s classic white wines are filled with freshness, fine acidity, great elegance and plenty of character. They are medium-bodied as well. This clear profile includes: Grüner Veltliner at the Kabinett level - especially the DAC wines (Weinviertel DAC and Traisental DAC); fresh Riesling from the wine-growing areas along the Danube river; elegant Weißburgunder and Chardonnay from Burgenland, plus representatives in the Styrian Classic family (Sauvignon Blanc, Morillon, Weißburgunder). The classic dry white wines are produced in all of Austria´s wine-growing areas.
CAT 4: White wine - powerful & bodied This category´s profile is best described with „Reserve“. The wines are vinified dry with body and extract, opulence and concentration. Besides the majority of wines which are classically vinified are those reflecting an international character through their maturation in small oak barrels. Prime examples are site wines from Grüner Veltliner and Riesling (such as Smaragd-level wines from the Wachau and premium wines from the area along the Danube or from the Weinviertel). Highly individual personalities are the powerful Zierfandler and Rotgipfler varietals from the Thermenregion, as well as the complex Weißburgunder and Chardonnay from Burgenland. Rounding out the category are the great Steiermark (Styria) site wines, whose varieties include Sauvignon Blanc, Morillon, Weißburgunder and Grauburgunder, plus specialities from Vienna like Neuburger, Roter Veltliner and the Gemischter Satz.
CAT 5: Rosé - racy & fruit-toned Rosés come from all of the country´s wine-growing areas and convey a wide range of expressions. For example, there are charming young wines like the Primus Pannonikus from Burgenland, and there are the fresh Zweigelt and St. Laurent from Niederösterreich (Lower Austria), as well as the racy, zesty Schilcher from Weststeiermark (West Styria).

CAT 6: Red wine - classic and fruity These are wines vinified in the classic style, and matured in either large wooden casks or steel tanks. They exude typically Austrian fruitiness, but also show depth and are not too high in alcohol: this means wines that reflect typicity of origin, elegance and pure drinking pleasure. Playing a leading role in this category are Zweigelt, which is at home in nearly all of the wine-growing areas, notably Carnuntum; and Blaufränkisch, of which enticing variants are produced especially in Mittelburgenland.
CAT 7: Red wine - compact and concentrated The wines of this level are compact and full; wines of complexity, depth and long ageing potential. They are concentrated red wines that highlight a rich array of grape varieties and sites. Some are produced as cuvées with just moderate expressions of wood. While they are matured in barriques, these top red wines reflect depth of fruit and typicity of terroir. Particularly noteworthy is that the Austrian varieties like Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and St.Laurent stand out from classics like Pinot Noir and the international varietals like Cabernet & Co.
CAT 8: White wine - fruity sweetness & muscular intensity Wines in the higher Spätlese and Auslese ranges have some of the greatest storage potential of Austrian wines. In their youth, these wines exude plenty of finesse with supple sweetness and a vivid fruit-acidity play. The palette extends from aromatic Muskat-Ottonel from Burgenland, (Gewürz-)Traminer from Steiermark (Styria), and Neuburger, Chardonnay, Weißburgunder, Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from the various wine-growing areas, to the great Spätlesen and Auslesen of the special varietals Zierfandler and Rotgipfler from the Gumpoldskirchen area.
CAT 9: Noble sweet wines These include Beerenauslesen and Trockenbeerenauslesen, Strohwein and Schilfwein, Eiswein with expressive, buttery smoothness, and the nobly refined Ruster Ausbruch. Characteristic of these sweet wine rarities are natural residual sweetness and highly-concentrated acidity, usually in combination with the incomparable noble rot flavours. In this group, Austria is truly world class. However, the category does have slight complications, such as the lack of a cohesive identity of origin, especially in comparison to Tokaji and Sauternes.
