OOOOOOOOOOOOO Are you coming to Kauai on vacation? In the past 2 years, dozens of customers have stopped by to visit my harp showroom when they were vacationing here in Kauai, Hawaii. Many of them scheduled a harp lesson with me, and/or rented a Harpsicle to play while here. A few even ordered a brand new harp! If you’re planning a visit to the Hawaiian islands, I highly suggest that you consider adding Kauai to your itinerary. It is just a short 30-minute flight from Honolulu. Kauai is also called the Garden Isle and is lush, green, and gorgeous, with beautiful beaches, mountains, and gardens! Lava is a short film that was released and shown with the Disney-Pixar Inside Out movie. It is the story of a volcano who has waited millions of years for his one true lava.This song, which tells the story throughout the short, was written by the film’s director, James Ford Murphy. Sylvia Woods' harp arrangement is in the key of C, with no lever changes required. It is for advanced beginner to intermediate players. Fingering and chord symbols are included. The lyrics are written in the music, as well as on a separate page. The music includes all 4 verses and choruses, and is 8 pages long. Sylvia Woods has arranged this bouncy love song by Michael Bublé for intermediate harp players. It is in the key of G (1 sharp) and has some C# and D# lever changes. Fingerings, lyrics, lever & pedal changes, and chord symbols are included. 7 pages of music. The harp range required is 24 strings (a little over 3 octaves), from a G up to a B.

Leonard Cohen’s popular 1985 song Hallelujah gained a new generation of fans in 2001 when it was featured in the Shrek movie. Sylvia’s 6-page arrangement of this classic song can be played by harpists of all levels. The first verse is easy, and each subsequent verse gets a bit more advanced. Beginners can play the first 1 or 2 verses, and more advanced players can continue on to the later verses. There are 4 verses. The music is in the key of C with chords, lyrics and fingerings. No lever changes are required. The range needed for verses 1 to 3 are 20 strings, from a G up to an E. If you have a small harp with less than about 30 strings, you’ll need to play the music an octave higher than written. Verse 4 requires an extra octave, with 27 strings from G up to E.

Harp Information BASIC HARP INFORMATION

HARP ORDERING

Harps are probably the most ancient stringed instruments. Their beautiful sound and graceful aesthetic form have magically enticed man for centuries. And even today, that fascination lives on. Harps in Ireland and Scotland, in the form that we now know them, were first evident in the 9th century AD. These early harps were strung with metal strings, and the sound box was usually carved from a single log. They were a focal point of Celtic music, reaching their greatest use between 1000 and 1750 AD. A bit later, these small harps were strung with gut and played in the royal courts of Europe. Gradually, they evolved into the pedal harp used today in orchestras. Celtic, lever, or folk harps have recently made a resurgence in the music world. A wide variety of music is played on these instruments, including classical, folk, medieval, Renaissance, popular, Celtic, and original music. Harps are tuned diatonically: a “do re mi” scale like the piano’s white keys. The strings are color-coded to help you find your way. C’s are red, and F’s are blue or black.

At the Sylvia Woods Harp Center we help people of all ages fulfill their dreams of owning and playing one of these magical instruments. You, too, can learn to play the harp! No previous musical experience is necessary. Even as a beginner, the harp sounds pleasing; just running your fingers over the strings creates lovely tones. With the help of Sylvia Woods’ book Teach Yourself To Play The Folk Harp (see page 2), you’ll soon be playing beautiful music on your new harp.

Lever harps (also called Celtic harps, folk harps, or Irish harps) usually have sharping levers on each string which can be used to raise the pitch of the string one-half step, making a sharp. All of the harps in our catalog are lever harps. They are all strung with nylon strings, with the exception of the Dusty Strings Boulevard harp, which is strung with gut.

Strings. All harps come fully strung and also include a tuning key. It is wise to order an extra set of strings when buying a harp, so that you will have a replacement when a string breaks. You can also purchase strings individually. Strings are not available at most music stores; you must order them from the Sylvia Woods Harp Center the harp maker, or another harp store. Using incorrect strings will void any warranty. Broken strings are a common occurrence, and are not included in the warranty. Strings are not returnable.

The largest of these harps have over 6 octaves of strings, and weigh about 85 to 90 pounds. There are 7 pedals on every pedal harp, which are moved by the harpist’s feet; one pedal for each of the 7 notes in the scale. Three of the pedals are controlled by the left foot, and four by the right. The pedals move discs on the neck of the harp which shorten or lengthen the sounding length of the strings, providing sharps, naturals, and flats. Each pedal has 3 positions which are held in place by notches in the base of the harp and by springs. For example, the pedal on the far right of the harp is the “A” pedal. When this pedal is in the highest of its three notches, all the “A” strings on the harp will sound as “A-flat.” When the harpist moves this pedal into its middle notch, the discs on each of the “A” strings engage, shortening the sounding length of all of the “A” strings, giving them the pitch of “A-natural.” When this pedal is in the lowest notch, the string lengths are again shortened by the discs, and all of the “A” strings will be “A-sharp.” By using the pedals, the accomplished harpist can play very chromatic music. Many people tune their lever harps to the key of C, and then use their sharping levers to play in sharp keys. Another common method is to tune to flat keys. To do this, when you tune your harp, tune down the strings you want flat by one-half-step. For example, tune all of your B strings to B-flat (on some electronic tuners, this will register as Asharp). Then, when you use a sharping lever on any of these strings, the lever will raise the pitch to a natural. If you have sharping levers on each string, and your tune to 3 flats (B-flat, E-flat and Aflat), you can play in any key from 3 flats up to 4 sharps. Tone and Tension: Dusty Strings harps have a bright, clear tone with ample volume for both solo and ensemble work. They respond well to all playing styles. Dusty Strings Allegro and Crescendo Harps The Allegro 26 and Crescendo 34 have a laminated Finland birch soundboard, with back, sides, neck and pillar of solid sapele, which is very similar to mahogany. The addition of solid sides and back gives the Allegro and Crescendo harps more resonance and clarity when compared to the all-laminated soundbox of the Ravenna series. The 26-string Allegro has a square back, and the 34-string Crescendo has a faceted hybrid-stave back.

Dusty Strings Ravenna and Boulevard Harps The body of both the Ravenna and the Boulevard models are made of laminated birch from Finland. It is the highest grade of plywood available, looks quite nice and has the added benefit of being fairly impervious to changes in temperature and humidity, enhancing the instrument’s stability. It gives a clean, clear, and pleasing quality of sound. The laminated birch soundboard has a clear lacquer finish over the wood, and the sides and back are covered with a thin ash-grained vinyl veneer. The neck and pillar and other small parts of the harp are made of solid ash. These harps have a 2-year warranty. RAVENNA HARPS: There are two Ravenna models by Dusty Strings: a 26-string with 1 octave below middle C, and a 34-string with 2 octaves below middle C. The Ravenna harps are perfect for the discriminating and budget-minded beginner, traveler, teacher, or student. They fill many needs with their affordability, reliability, portability, and most importantly their rich and satisfying sound. Full sets of Loveland sharping levers are optional on the Ravennas. All the lever holes are pre-drilled, making it easy to add levers at a later date. Dusty Strings FH Harps The all solid-wood FH series gives the most of everything: volume, resonance, clarity, smoothness and articulateness. FH series harps are made from five species of hardwoods: sapele, walnut, bubinga, maple, and figured cherry. Because these woods cover a spectrum of tonal as well as visual color, deciding which one you want for your harp can be a fun voyage of discovery. There are 3 basic factors to balance in choosing wood: appearance, price, and sound. The first two are fairly straightforward. People will be drawn visually to a particular wood for many different reasons, and everyone has their own budgetary issues. Price relates to the scarcity factor of the wood, and does not necessarily mean “better” (unless it happens to be your favorite!). Sound, however, can be the hardest to pin down if you aren’t in a position to play and compare the woods first-hand. Because they all sound good, deciding which is “best” becomes purely a matter of personal taste and there is no wrong answer. It is a good idea to have a spare tuning key (also called a tuning wrench) for your harp. There are several sizes of harp tuning pins used by different makers. It is extremely important that you purchase the correct size key for your harp.

When used on the tuning pins (shown above), they give you a color cue on that side of the harp to assist you when tuning. PDF Downloads: How They Work If ordering by MAIL, please be sure to include the following information: Your name, address, daytime and evening phone numbers. Please also include your email address, if you have one. List the products you would like. If paying by credit card, include the card number, expiration date, and billing address, and we will add the applicable shipping charges to your total before we charge your card. To calculate your shipping charges if you are paying by check or money order, please call us. Another option is to start placing an order on our website www.harpcenter.com. There is a shipping calculator located at the bottom of the online shopping cart. Once you see the shipping costs, you may abandon the order if you wish.

Shipping and Payment Options Shipping charges vary depending on the weight of the items. When ordering on the web, your shipping options and prices will be shown at checkout before you finalize your order. There are no shipping charges for PDF downloads. Shipping outside the U.S.

All of Sylvia Woods’ books and sheet music are available two ways: as the printed music that we will mail to you, or as a PDF download that you will print yourself on your computer printer. Music composed or arranged by other people is generally only available from us either as the printed music OR as a PDF download. These options are clearly stated here in this catalog, and on our website. PDFs are files that you download from our website to your computer, and then print out on your computer printer. Because you print the music yourself, you do not have to pay any shipping for these items. Plus, you get the music immediately! No more waiting days or weeks for your music to arrive. Once you complete your order for a PDF from our site, you will get a confirmation email within a few minutes. Scroll to the bottom of this email for the instructions on how to download your PDF. Be sure to enter the correct email in your order, or you won’t get this important confirmation!
