NDU – Economy and Scholarship in a New Era The collaboration of the New Design University with the economy is of special concern to the Chamber of Commerce of Lower Austria. The creative potential is increasingly becoming the decisive location factor. 30 years ago nobody would have thought that our creative industry alone would require thousands of workers within the next few years. We can therefore assume that this economic sector in Austria will continue to strengthen as a “job-engine”. In our design university we train those professionals, whom our creative economy will require tomorrow. However even with this progress, we are just at the beginning of a long road. Because in the competition for the best minds, the best ideas and the best technology we will only survive if we create the best possible conditions and promote and facilitate the synergy between scholarship and economics in lower Austria. For this we need universities and scholarly institutions to be places of communication, as places for collaboration, for shared learning and collective creativity. Through the NDU, the Chamber of Commerce of Lower Austria invests in the future of this country. Through this study guide we offer you an overview of the entire study programme of our New Design University.

BR KommR. Sonja Zwazl President of the Chamber of Commerce Lower Austria

Dr. Franz Wiedersich Director of the Chamber of Commerce Lower Austria

Design & Technology: Consistent continuation of a holistic development strategy We are committed to research and teaching and consider ourselves subsequently as consultant and special service providers to the economy. Internationally oriented, we aim to contribute greatly in increasing the performance and viability of Austrian enterprises – especially those operating in Lower Austria. The Private University of the Creative Industries – better known as the New Design University (NDU) – is one of the youngest universities in Austria. In December 2004, the Faculty of Design with bachelor degree courses in “Graphic & Media Design”, “Interior Architecture & 3D-Design” as well as courses at masters level in “Illustration & Print Media”, “Interior Architecture & 3D-Design” and also the open master degree in “Innovation & Design Processes” were officially accredited. The Faculty of Design has developed a profile that focuses on the one hand on the basic artisanal-craftsmanship debates in design at the highest level, while in parallel giving exposure to the most advanced electronic design media. On the other hand well-founded scientific teaching also helps prepare students for leading positions. The Faculty of Design also acts as the foundation and source of further development. The bridge from design to technology is the logical continuation of a holistic development strategy right up to the economy. Accredited in September 2008 the “Faculty of Technology” now offers a range of study opportunities for creative young people with two new full-time courses in the fields of “Event Engineering” and “Design & Architecture Technology”. Future topics will also be implemented at the interface with design. The development of international relationships is also an integral part of any practical studies. The University maintains and develops strong and innovative partnerships with national and international companies and universities in order to distinguish itself as a “Creative University” and to network academically in the context of the European culture and economy. The relationship of the New Design University with the Chamber of Commerce also helps it to be a competent partner of the economy. Close co-operation with business also creates input from practice and therefore links creativity with business. Some companies also come to the NDU with “real” projects which, dependant on the respective brief, are developed and implemented by the students under the direction of the relevant expert or programme leader. With the establishment of the New Design University not only the provincial capital but St. Pölten as an educational location has won another important institution, research and teaching has become furthermore attractive within the educational landscape of Lower Austria. Education is therefore an essential element of socio-political responsibility, through which the region can open beyond its borders and in parallel strengthen its identity. Prof. Dir. Mag. Josef Kolarz-Lakenbacher Chairman of the Board of the Private University Mag. Johannes Zederbauer Director of the Private University

We are Austria’s youngest university for creative minds Mass education is “out” – individual supervision is “in” Through manageable working groups and close student supervision we ensure that every student can develop and evolve accordingly. The allocation of the bachelor degree study time, in-situ courses and allocation of workload during free time has the primary goal of rapid progress in the acquisition of expertise. The personal, individual mentoring from the full & part-time tutors as well as “real” practice-oriented projects are a guaranteed part of the studies. Facilities with state-of-the-art technology Our classrooms, studios, laboratories, workshops and lecture rooms are all outfitted with the relevant equipment and furniture, which also takes into account the changing requirements of future-oriented didactics. Regular renewals and updates ensure the maintenance of international standards. The latest teaching strategies Flexible time and room allocation lead to the constant interaction between students and teachers from the different disciplines. Regular individual and small group-based tutorials provide a firm basis for dialogue between students and tutors.

Creation of a Portfolio

The path to design studies

Foundation Course/Preparatory Studies

During the first semester the portfolio already begins to take shape and in the second semester, the finishing touches are applied. The portfolio is perfected in parallel to working on a specific final project accompanied by the teaching modules and individual mentoring. Application for a university place for the next year will be specifically targeted. Additional seminars and workshops in supporting disciplines as well as study-trips are offered depending on the progress and period of the course. Time Allocation

Those who have not previously attended an appropriate school …

You have attended a secondary school, a commercial academy or an HBLA. Your graphical talent was barely utilized in school. In the school leaving certificate no creative items are noted. But you feel the desire to make “something artistic” with your career. Those who have completed an apprenticeship or …

You have learned an appropriate profession within a company and worked successfully in professional practice for some years. You now want to make “more” from your manual abilities. … must successfully complete a 2-Semester Preparatory Studies course.

In these 2 semesters you will acquire the basic skills that you need for design studies or an artistic career: drawing, experimental design, illustration techniques, typography right through to model building. In addition to this the relevant computer programs, printmaking, and photography are also taught. … will in this year be best prepared for further study

Because the School-Leaving Exam is not an absolute prerequisite for entry into a creative field of study, you have a good chance of a place with us. Over the two semesters, along with the portfolio that has been created during the preparatory studies, you will acquire all the necessary skills to enable you to apply a year later for a place to further and continue your studies. Novel Structures

The course is unique Austria. The great successes of the first years and increasing demand are primarily due to the dedicated young industry practitioners who share their knowledge and experience in lively workshops. A “young” education model has evolved that is unique in the German-speaking countries.

The Foundation Course begins in early October and continues until mid-June naturally with the usual school holidays. In addition to this, at the beginning of the first semester, two intensive (5 day) weeks should also be taken into account, then at the beginning of the second semester one intensive (5 day) week is also required. Time should also be reserved for homework and project planning. Students can expect a 30 hour work week during the semester. Modules 1. Semester

The total number of hours in the second semester is therefore 272 hours per student. Through manageable working groups and intense student supervision, we make it possible for each student to develop in his or her desired direction. Optimal preparation for study at the New Design University

Three teaching segments

In the initial phase basic knowledge is imparted in the areas of drawing and rendering techniques, printmaking, typography, computer graphics and spatial & 3D-design. During the first semester the students are shown the basic skills necessary in design through initial work assignments and projects, under the intensive guidance of the tutors. A culture of project-related self-study is established and maintained, with all necessary technical resources made available so that one can optimise one’s work during the final phase (including a specialization in the 2nd semester) of the course. In the second semester, the decision is made to place an emphasis on either the 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional realms. The basic training is by now also complemented by specific modules such as design work, field studies and in-depth work in typography and poster art. At the end of the course an assessment takes place. During the final week all work will be presented and evaluated.

The ubiquitous profession

Graphic design deals with the visual communication of information, messages and ideas by using text and/or images. The work of no other profession is encountered to such an extent in everyday life as that of the graphic designer. We are confronted with the creative work of graphic designers in, for example, packages of all kinds, magazines, newspapers, posters, corporate design, web design, books, advertising and signage amongst other things. Modern graphic designers thus require a variety of creative, cognitive, craft and technical skills. At the New Design University students are tutored by professionals with many years of industry experience in the various areas of graphic design. Over six semesters of “Core-Studies”, intensive study is undertaken in all the major disciplines of Communication Design, such as creativity techniques, logo and corporate design, packaging design, publication design, integrated advertising campaigns, as well as working on the conception and design of websites. In the “Font and Typography Workshop” the students learn experimental and applied typography, calligraphy and typeface design and programming. In the drawing workshop, they learn perspective and still-life drawing and also illustration techniques. In the workshop “Electronic Publishing & Prepress”, they learn to deal with the essential computer programs developed for graphic design and the technical implementation of their work for transfer into production. The aim of the 6 semester study programme

The bachelor’s programme “Graphic & Media Design” imparts the knowledge and the specialised skills required for independent and responsible execution of the tasks of the graphic designer of the 21st Century, including specialized theoretical, economic, artistic and also a cultural-science content. Interior Architecture & 3D-Design

The prerequisite for the bachelor’s programme is the completion of a general or vocational higher education or a minimum of 3 years professional experience in the field of design, interior architecture or alternatively an outstanding artistic design aptitude. Suitability shall be demonstrated in the form of an extensive special entrance examination conducted in front of a commission. Fees

At its core the department of “Interior Architecture & 3-dimensional Design” encompasses the creative, technical and economic planning of interiors, room structures and facilities. The borders between related disciplines such as architecture, object and product design are however blurred. Therefore, the projects in “Core-studies” also embrace complex conversion and construction situations (e.g. in dealing with historical buildings, façade design amongst other areas), object design (e.g. design of lighting appliances, furnishings and detail forms), conception of temporary buildings (e.g. design of booths, displays and exhibition systems) as well as with smaller urban objects. The Bachelor in Interior Architecture & 3-dimensional Design prepares students for this broad career field. The design education contains a complex range of studies in which graduates are enabled to handle complex design tasks and to take over as artistic director of projects as well as to work as part of a team. In the context of the degree program, the individual talents of the students shall be detected and promoted. A mixture of didactic and pedagogic design exercises and realistic projects (sometimes “real” built projects) of various degrees of complexity acts as a means of exploration. The bachelor’s degree also offers graduates excellent employment opportunities on the national and international labour market. The bachelor programme prepares graduates to work in architecture and interior architecture offices, general design studios and as a freelance designer’s who work at the frontiers of art. Our bachelor’s graduates have shown that they are professionally capable and this degree enables both the transition into our own, as well as into other master programmes. 4-Semester consecutive Master’s Degree

Illustration & Print Media Course of Studiest

The four semester consecutive MA Degree “Illustration & Print Media” is suitable for graduates with a BA or equivalent degree in graphic design, illustration or in the fine arts. The studies provide previously trained graphic designers the possibility of extending their design horizons and qualifications through the medium of illustration and to further expand their inventive-artisanal skills and thus open up new markets for themselves. In addition, trained illustrators and visual artists gain through these studies, the possibility to debut as active designers and to offer complete solutions in graphic design with an emphasis on illustration in the creative industries. Unlike traditional illustration courses the aim of the course is to train graduates to independently conceive the illustrations from the first idea right up to a publication standard. These studies pay special attention to the development of creative ideas through the consistent use and development of individual talents in such areas as freehand drawing and its technical and creative implementation with a variety of analogue and electronic media. The focus of the education is the intellectual discussion of the relationship between text and pictures in the closest connection with their graphical implementation. Instruction and consolidation is achieved through a basis of applied and experimental thematic positions. In the second semester these two pillars of the studies, the applied project studio and the experimental design laboratory already promote individualization along with the personal design talent of the student. This all takes place in a core-area of the project studios such as: poster design, children’s book illustration, scientific illustration, packaging and advertising, comic/sequential image, book design, lettering, technical presentation, digital artwork, storyboards and animation and character design. Through a parallel apportionment of these tasks within the field of tension between these two pillars the master’s studies obtain on the one hand the maximum development of the creative potential of students and on the other hand, this form of teaching gives practical insights into the various specialist-areas of Illustration. In the mediated juxtaposition of the applied and experimental there is also the possibility to work on the development of methods of visualization that innovatively cross the boundaries between the above areas; thus new spheres of working are revealed to illustration. The limited participant numbers further supports the development of the personal talents of the students. The lessons from both international and Austrian experts form a close bond between theoretical and practical courses. This allows for a continuous and intensive reflection and development of individual creative activity. The specific illustrational expertise to comprehend, difficult relationships and visualize them is practiced here as well as the team. 18

Graduates of the “Illustration & Print Media” programme are qualified for leading creative management positions in the following professions: • Publishing • Animation/Trick Film • Advertising (Spots, Clips, etc.) • TV, Film, Theatre and Stage Design • Information Design (Users Manual, etc.) • Graphic Design Studios • Advertising and Communication Departments • Contract Teachers in secondary education • Self-employed Designer • Freelance Designer at the frontiers of Art Course Structure

forum of the various special disciplines (associated technologies, art & cultural studies, environment and sustainability & morphology). These design themes will be worked on by small groups of MA students in the project studios together with tutors, guest lecturers and experts in their fields. Design Laboratory

Tuition in teams and around the “Base Model” is complemented by well-founded artisanal and intellectual, morphological and theoretical discussion of the methodologies of design, that continually question, prise open and expand the horizons of established practices. Master thesis subjects and content integration

The course concludes with a practical master’s project from one of the aforementioned project fields which is further complemented by a theoretical work. The taught cognitive subjects promote intensive interaction between the students with the historical, intellectual, morphological and substantive aspects of the formal work in the field of interior architecture. The specialistarea “Associated Technologies” deals with on the one hand relevant autonomous areas of knowledge, however, in parallel the project studio also attends to research work and project development. “Economics & Law” focuses on the appropriate legal issues, business management and marketing. In an intensively cultivated exercise in “team teaching” these skills are practiced and deepened in the form of concrete projects. The aim of the 4 semester study programme

This course of studies aims to expand the creative horizon, create a consolidation of methodical design process as well as a comprehensive reflection of the task-specific context which takes into account design, cultural, social, technological, economic and ecological aspects. Furthermore, the students gain team and leadership competence in creative design and management processes, in conjunction with an expert cultural-scientific educational background. Target Group

Innovation and Design Strategies

Degree

Master of Design (MDes.) Fees

The fees for the two year master’s degree course amount to 3 500 Euros per semester. Course of Studies

The “Innovation and Design Strategies” degree, has positioned itself at the interface between architecture, design and technology. Due to rapidly changing economic, technological and social conditions innovative design strategies and concepts are in greater demand than ever. To generate innovation, means to be able to look beyond the horizon and sphere of activity of one’s own branch. Innovation actually begins even before any design work, through the ability to arrange the underlying processes in new and innovative ways. The multidisciplinary approach of the studies enables animated methods of knowledge transfer between these creative disciplines, there by opening up space for the development of innovative and unconventional design approaches. The critical discussion about contemporary product development in terms of sustainability, as well as the analysis of the human-product relationship in different contexts are methodically utilised in the design process and serve as instruments for the conception and implementation of “design-driven innovation”. The consolidation and expansion of individual skills and talents through practice-oriented and applied methods is worked on thus extending the team and leadership skills within innovation and design process. The study consists of the three main areas “Core-Studies/Studio Projects”, “Scientific/Contextual Studies” and “Economics & Law”. Instruments from the areas of innovation theory, process analysis, design research, visualization techniques (Rhino), the environmental sciences, art and cultural studies, marketing, as well as project and innovation management is intended to support the project work. Career Options

Graduates of the master’s programme will apply their expanded and consolidated skills in the following professions: • Product Conception and Development • Product Design and Consulting • Architecture, Interior Architecture • Information and Web Design • Communication, Marketing, Advertising, PR • Arts and Cultural Management • Museums and Exhibitions • within Industry Networks • in one’s own Company 24

Faculty of echnology 30

The Faculty of Technology sees itself as a new, independent pillar in an innovative and futureoriented environment of a successful and established university educational institution. Technology needs attractive and functional design ideas, conversely, it demands new and future-oriented design experts with a high degree of technological and scientific knowledge; knowledge that can only be communicated within the context of a university and research-oriented structure. The aim of the Faculty of Technology is therefore to create the basic parameters and cognitive models to be able to offer this specialized education at a high level in an international technological environment. At the same time a partnership-oriented climate between design and technology should be established in which creativity in both areas can be fostered and implemented in a results-oriented manner. With both degrees, “Design & Architecture Technology” and “Event Engineering”, a basis for a successful and innovative technological education at the New Design University was established. With these two disciplines technically interested young people are offered exceptional and unique educational opportunities within a European context, one that opens up futureoriented and multi-faceted career opportunities for the graduates. Through this a new,

practical educational direction can be established in a university-related environment which combines applied teaching with a simultaneously high level in theory and research. The Faculty of Technology offers knowledge with a future. The complexity of our daily tasks increases steadily, the need for a high degree of specialization and networking requires new and innovative approaches from a university education. In future, it will be even more necessary to develop modern problem solution strategies with strong integration between technology, economy and management. Within a framework of hands-on projects the students learn methods of approach to integrated solutions that are directly appropriate and achievable in the industrial environment. At the same time a high level of research and innovative technology and product development is a guarantee for modern curricula in the field of high technology. The unity of teaching and research is one of the essential principles of the Faculty of Technology at the New Design University. Dipl. Ing. We Further offers in the design field at the WIFI, St. Pölten

International academic and economic networking

WIFI College/Advanced course for sustainable product design

We at the NDU are not new to international co-operation – our very foundation as a University itself emerged out of a long and rich collaboration with the esteemed Kingston University in London (2000–2006). International co-operation is far more than the sum of the various parts involved – students and staff should have the opportunity to study in another country, to experience other social contexts and learning and teaching methods, to improve their foreign language abilities, be exposed to a range of life-skills not taught at University and gain an international perspective which in turn makes them more attractive to prospective employers. Last year we therefore took the decision to link our University into what is probably the most successful student/staff exchange programme worldwide – the Erasmus Programme. Our aim is to submit our application in order to be awarded the “Erasmus University Charter”; if awarded this would give us the right to begin negotiations with partner universities within the Erasmus framework and therefore perhaps be in the position to offer exchange opportunities as soon as the Winter Semester of 2011. In the meantime we will continue with “Loose Transfers of Knowledge” with other institutions (inter-Uni ad-hoc relationships & agreements & information exchange) which will enrich us all.

You have a general broad education and a school-leaving exam and want to enter rapidly into the working world, or you have solid manual working skills and wish to make more of them. You are therefore very well positioned for a College/Post-secondary course in design. Depending on the chosen training you will be specifically tutored in the following specialist areas (Technical Drawing, Workshop, Design Theory), or instructed in areas of general education (English, German, Mathematics) and within two years you may then acquire the required knowledge to sit the School-Leaving and/or the Diploma Examination. The field of 3-dimensional design is generously allotted time in a context of creatively challenging projects. The educational emphasis of “Sustainable Product Design” comprises of Interior, Furniture and Product Design, CAAD, Presentation Technology, Building Construction, Model Making, Economics & Law which will support the implementation of the artistic, technical and economic stages of your design concepts. Further information about our educational offers can be found on our website: www.wifiDesignkolleg.at. Practice-oriented training programs for the creative

Those who provide creative services have many skills. They advise their customers, define a concept, develop and communicate these ideas, calculate the costs, are knowledgeable in copyright and usage rights, produce finished artwork and supervise production. Few professions combine creative freedom and success-oriented, cost-based thinking so closely with each other. In times of new technology, rising customer expectations and continuously new basic parameters the demands are rising continuously. In conjunction with the WIFI Lower Austria, and as a consistent continuation our study programme therefore offers, specialist training in the areas of Design, Marketing and Technology. Amongst other things available in the programme: Drawing Workshops; Game Design with Flash; Academic college courses: Photography (in cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences, St. Pölten), Pricing for Design Excellence; Creative selling and negotiating; Protection against Creative Copyright-Theft: Training as Certified Professional PrePress; Academic college courses: Event Technology (in cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences, St. Pölten)

Since the International Office was initiated in September 2009 up until February 2010 we have amongst other things been partaken in: • Estonian-Austrian (disainioo/designAustria) Networking & Exchange Workshop in Tallinn, Estonia. • Project Workshop: “Ein-Leuchten” in the context of the Vienna Design Week a National & International Design Festival in the Museums Quarter MQ, Wien. • BMWF-Omani Government Networking, “Round Table” Meeting & Gala Dinner attended by the Austrian Minister for Education Johannes Hahn & HE Dr Rawya Saud Al Busaidi, Minister of Higher Education, Sultanate of Oman. • i: OeAD Training days – ECTS and Diploma Supplement Label, University of Linz. • ii: OeAD Bologna Follow-Up for Art Universities and Art High Schools.
