Study Abroad Guide for Students in the EBF General Option Seth Blumsack, August 2016 Introduction: This guide is written to help EBF General Option students with a Program Year of 2015 or later who would like to meet General Option requirements by taking a qualifying study abroad experience. It describes the requirements for a study abroad to count towards the EBF General Option, provides some examples of programs that meet EBF requirements, and provides a check sheet that students can use to have their advisors or the program chair review study abroad plans. Study Abroad as an EBF Student: EBF students with a program year of 2015 or later may use a qualifying study abroad program to meet requirements for the General Option instead of taking an approved minor or concurrent major. A qualifying study abroad program meets the following criteria: • Students must take at least 15 credits during their study abroad; • At least 12 of those credits must count towards EBF requirements. These can be core EBF courses (e.g. EBF 200, EBF 301); supplementary courses required by EBF (e.g. statistics, IB 303); or electives that would qualify to fill EBF requirements (the 100-level and 400-level electives). These 12 credits may not include general education credits (unless they also meet a specific EBF requirement, like EBF 200 or ECON 104), free elective credits or remedial courses. The process of having a study abroad experience approved for EBF involves a few steps, so some planning is required. 1. Identify an appropriate location on the Global Programs web site (http://gpglobalea.gp.psu.edu/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.SimpleSearch), and identify specific courses that you might take. 2. Make an appointment with your assigned faculty advisor or the EBF program chair to discuss the courses that you might take during study abroad, to determine if the study abroad option can count for the EBF General Option. 3. Make an appointment with the relevant study abroad advisor in Global Programs to discuss application procedures, costs and other topics. 4. Once accepted, finalize the list of courses and approvals for EBF requirement equivalents with the EBF program chair. The program chair will make a note of acceptance in Starfish, Penn State’s on-line tool for academic advising. This note will be the official record of acceptance that the department will use as validation for graduation. 5. Upon returning to University Park, fill out course petition forms for any courses taken abroad that have been approved as EBF equivalents. The biggest challenge is finding programs that have enough courses that could count towards EBF requirements and planning your schedules at University Park so that you don’t sign up for the courses you would want to take while studying abroad. Some required

courses for EBF, such as IB 303 and 400-level electives, are easily satisfied while studying abroad. Very few study abroad options will have equivalents to EBF core courses. Each program described on the Global Programs site will have a list of courses that Penn State students have historically taken (look for a link that says “View Historical Course List” on the Global Programs web site for a particular program). That is a good place to start looking. The advisors in Global Programs may be able to help you identify other courses for a particular program. Example Study Abroad Programs This section provides a few examples of study abroad programs that could satisfy the requirements of the EBF General Option. These are just examples – remember that all study abroad programs must have written approval in Starfish from the EBF program chair. Summer Abroad at the Dalian University of Technology, China: This is a unique program that combines study abroad over the summer with an internship at Petro China, one of China’s largest oil companies. It is focused on energy and environmental issues, making it one of the best options available for EBF students. The credits earned at Dalian will be transferred back to Penn State and can be used for substitutes of EBF 484 or IB 303, or for 400-level electives for the EBF major or minor. They can also be counted in the major or minor of Asian Studies. They can also be used for GS and IL Gen Ed credits. To satisfy the requirements for the EBF General Option, the Dalian program must be combined with an Asian Studies minor. Since some credits earned at the Dalian program can be applied to the Asian Studies minor, this is an attractive opportunity that can be easily integrated into a four-year course plan. More information on the Dalian program can be obtained from Dr. Andrew Kleit or at http://www.eme.psu.edu/ebf/dalian. Certificate in Business in Emerging Markets at ESAN, Peru: This is another program that is highly unique and marketed specifically to students in the Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering. A curriculum of seven or eight courses (over 17 weeks) leads to a Certificate in Business in Emerging Markets. A list of courses and more information is available at http://www.eme.psu.edu/academics/undergraduate/opportunities/cbemprogram. EBF students can get credit for IB 303, RM 302, BLAW 243 and a 400-level EBF elective through this program. One unique aspect of this program is its timing – the terms at ESAN run roughly from March to July or from August to December. Taking the March-July term option would allow for time during winter break to take an internship or other activity that would normally happen during the summer.

Information for the following programs is taken from the Global Programs listings. The course listings here are just examples of courses that students have taken in the past. Students should note that course offerings may vary from semester to semester, so there are no guarantees that specific courses will be available. Please work with an advisor from Global Programs to verify the courses that will be offered during any specific term before committing to any study abroad program.
