UAS, Bangalore SUCCESS STORIES ON SOME IMPORTANT CROPS GROUNDNUT SEED PRODUCTION PROGRAMME UNDER - RKVY National Seed Project, UAS, GKVK, initiated the seed village programme on groundnut, TMV-2 at Lingasugur taluk of Raichur district during Rabi/summer 2009-10 covering an area of 2108 at Gurugunta hobli. The villages covered were Gurugunta, Tanamanakal, Sheelahally, Mincheri and Poolabavi. The crop sowings taken up during the month of December-2009 and January-2010. Irrigated crop getting water from Narayanapur dam. This was the pioneer seed production programme of groundnut, in this area was no other agency taking up seed production activities. Group discussion meeting of farmers was organized during the month of November and informed the groundnut farmers about seed production and motivated them to take up seed production during the ENSUING season. Necessary package of practices was communicated to the farmers about groundnut seed production prior to sowing’s.

Periodical visits were undertaken to the seed plots and organized training programmes during the crop season to protect the crop . further, field day was organized in a massive scale, where Vice-Chancellor of this University, Special Officer (Vice-Chancellor) of Raichur

Agricultural University and Officer’s of both the universities and scientists involved in the actual seed production programme involved in this educational activities. Specially invited the developmental department officers

viz., Karnataka State Department of Agricultural,

Karnataka State Seed Certification Agency, Karnataka Oil Federation, Progressive farmers and neighbors gathered witnessed the crop got the information from the actual seed growers on production aspects.

The crop after harvest was procured by UAS giving the higher price than

the prices

prevailing in local markets. Procurement, processing and certification was carried out at local levels this helped the farmers to minimize the cost of transportation and getting higher incomes. Numerically each acre of crop fetched at least Rs. 2,100/- additional compared to the commercial crop. The knowledge received by the farmers will be utilized through out their life. Government of Karnataka also given incentives for certified seed production programme. This awareness motivated the farmers to take up seed production than commercial crop production in and around Gurugunta of Lingasagur taluk of Raichur district. Case studies Farmers

Narasipura of Mysore district. The varieties like BRG-1 and BRG-2 were grown in small area and produced 150 q of quality seeds during 2008-09 in the first year RKVY project and this seed was sown in area of 3000 acres, further, the seed production was increased to 600 qtls during 2009-10, it covered nearly 12,000 acres of area under Redgram cv. BRG-1 and BRG-2. In the 3rd year of RKVY project, there was enormous increase in seed production, produced more than 1,400 qtls. of quality seeds. This will be covering nearly 28,000 acres of area in the next year. This was the pioneer seed production programme of redgram, in this area was no other agency taking up seed production activities. Group discussion meeting of farmers was organized during the month of June and informed the redgram farmers about seed production and motivated them to take up seed production during the ensuing season. Necessary package of practices was communicated to the farmers about groundnut seed production prior to sowing’s. HYBRID RICE SEED PRODUCTION PROGRAMME UNDER RKVY Rice is a major dietary staple food in India, providing 43% of calorie requirement for more than 70% of India population. Rice occupies largest area among all the crops grown in India. Projection of India’s rice production target for 2025 AD is 140 million tones per year in the coming decade. Since land is a shrinking resource, increasing food production by expanding the area under cultivation is impossible. On the other hand, population progression demands maximizing production per unit land. So the only way out is to enhance marginal productivity. Among many genetic approaches being explored to break the yield barrier in rice, hybrid rice technology appears to be the most feasible and readily adoptable one. Conceived of the potential of hybrid rice technology, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi, identified this as a top priority area and initiated network project on hybrid rice with a major objective to develop hybrids with 15-20% yield advantage over the highest yielding inbred check varieties. The University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore was among the first institution to initiate research on hybrid rice which has resulted in release of two rice hybrids KRH-1 and KRH2. Among them KRH-2 was released by C.V.R.C at National level and recommended for most of the rice growing states, due to its high performance and wider adoptability. Hybrid Rice gives 30-40% higher yield than the varieties UAS, Bangalore has released KRH-2 during 1996 and is suitable for irrigation command areas of southern Karnataka with a grin yield of 8-10 tons/ha (80-100 qtls/ha). Since, it is a hybrid, replacement rate is 100%. The University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore since then has taken special interest in popularizing the variety by producing parental seeds of this hybrid in larger quantity. It has also multiplied large quantity of certified seeds of KRH-2 and supplied to various government organizations of different rice growing states viz., Tamil Nadu, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar

Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Uttaranchal, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Tripura etc. and this hybrid has engrossed the farmers of these states.

Seed production by NSP : Till 2006-07 : The area under seed production was meager, in and around Mandya district. Since, 2006-07, UAS could able to increase production of KRH-2. Year

From 2006-07 onwards, UAS has initiated seed production in Andhra Pradesh. Total production also increased from meager 20 qtls before 2006-07 to 5000 qtls in 2010-11 a quantum jump in area and production.
