Participants will be asked to identify those strategies that work best for the college (faculty, staff, students and their families, community partners) to retain students in the first year and those that support student persistence through to graduation. To keep the session realistic, participants will clarify which strategies can be measured in terms of impact on student retention and graduation rates. Participants may choose to collaborate via a GoogleDoc (use of mobile technologies encouraged) or via paper/pen. Often, the library is the place students go when they don't know where to go!  Connect: An Alternative Course Management System (Room CB302) This session will demonstrate how instructors who use McGraw-Hill textbooks can incorporate McGraw-Hill Connect into their courses. Connect is a Course Management System (CMS) that links with BlackBoard or provides an alternative platform to BlackBoard, in the event that BlackBoard is unavailable. One interesting feature of connect is the LearnSmart module that allows students to self-assess their comprehension of reading material through a series of questions. Join the session to learn more!  Financial Aid: What Faculty Need to Know About Financial Aid and Student's Progress in Their Courses (Room CB110) Financial Aid has a huge impact on student retention, and it is affected by a number of things.  Hazardous Waste Training (Room CB112) This training will outline the requirement of the OSHA standard, Hazard Communication (1910 CFR 1200), for chemicals and hazardous waste. It will also outline the new requirements of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) as it impacts the Hazard Communication standard.  Diversity Student Success- From the Community to the Classroom to the Hallway (Room CB112) This session will explore how ALL BCTC Faculty and Staff impact the success of underrepresented, low income and first generation college students. A brief data review will provide a foundation for faculty and staff to learn about effective advising, mentoring and student engagement practices that lead to student success. Understanding of key components of student success (building networks, connecting to social justice, fostering engagement and intentional advising) will lead participating faculty and staff to create/articulate actions steps they will apply to their interaction with students on campus and within the community.  CANCELLED - FYE 105: Achieving Academic Success = Increasing Student Retention (Room CB110) Come to this session to find out why first-time freshmen who passed this first experience course were 320% more likely to be retained than students who did not take the course freshmen year. This course promotes student success through connection with campus and community. This session will explore strategies that promote academic, interpersonal, and intrapersonal success at Bluegrass Community and Technical College.  Hazardous Communication Training (Room CB210) This session will be an Awareness level course. Emphasis is placed on understanding Material Safety Data Sheets, Labeling, and will touch on the GHS (Global Harmonized System). The general audience is those individuals typically in a non-lab setting, who may handle chemicals related to cleaning supplies or mechanical/maintenance substances.
