Believers. Leaders. Achievers. Each year, we take this opportunity to recognise exceptional people whose extraordinary dedication and commitment to young people and Scouting has been marked with a St George’s Day Award.

L

eading entrepreneurs such as Richard Branson and Peter Cruddas have attributed their accomplishments to the early skills they learned as a Scout – sometimes even going so far as to say that they may not have had their success were it not for Scouting. Such plaudits demonstrate just how important it is to recognise the significant achievements of this year’s St George’s Day Awards recipients. Every adult who gives their time to Scouting supports the development of young people in one way or another. However it is also nice to take time to appreciate those that go the extra mile to make a real difference to the lives of so many. Bear and I very much look forward to meeting as many of you as possible at Windsor in April and to the very special lunch for this year’s recipients of the Silver Wolf, who will be invited to join me for Founder’s Day next year. I recently attended a dinner with over 100 Explorer Scouts at which I asked what it was that made Scouting so important for them. Without exception, they said ‘our leader’.

And it is not only the young people that have been influenced. Many adults have been similarly supported and motivated, so congratulations and a big ‘thank you’ on behalf of all of us.

Silver Wolf

‘In recognition of services to Scouting of the most exceptional nature’

The Silver Wolf Award was introduced by Lord Baden-Powell and remains The Scout Association’s highest award for service to Scouting. The Silver Wolf is the unrestricted gift of the Chief Scout and is only awarded ‘for service of an exceptional nature.’ It is not normally awarded until at least a Silver Acorn has been gained. In practice, this means that it is seldom awarded for less than 30 years’ service, although this is not always the case.

Betty and Guy ‘Stan’ Stansbury – Silver Wolf This incredible duo have been involved in Scouting for a combined total of 115 years. They even met at a County Scout conference. Looking back on their long and distinguished service, Betty says that Scouting is ‘a way of life for us’. These pioneers were involved in the formation of the Misbourne mixed unit of Senior Scouts and Guides in 1964 – an association which continues to this day. Among other highlights she mentions the ‘Saga 65 mixed expedition to Norway run by the Scout and Guide Graduate Association in 1965 when Stan led the Bucks contingent and the Misbourne Unit’s first expedition to the Canadian Rockies Alberta in 1989 – our 17th annual trip abroad.’ i.SCOUT because… it has given us so many wonderful friendships along the way, what would we do without it?

Lesley Bordoli – Bar to the Silver Acorn The Group Scout Leader for the 1st Ruthin Scout Group has overseen a period of strong growth, including the launch of two new sections. She took on the additional role of District Commissioner in 2007 and has been successfully pulling the District together for numerous activities every year since. Lesley returned to her calling as a Group Scout Leader recently but, even then, has been prepared to help out when required – not least when she stepped forward to support the Explorer Scout section after it lost its leader. Area Commissioner David Jones says she displays ‘continued, positive thinking for the development of Scouting in the Vale of Clwyd District.’ i.SCOUT because… of the knowledge that I am helping to form the citizens of the future, the kick I get from helping others and the smile on a young person’s face when they’ve achieved something.

Paul Turner – Silver Acorn Since being awarded the Medal of Merit in 2003, Paul has worked tirelessly both for his Group, the 1st Roxteth, and for Harrow and Wealdstone District. He encourages a wide range of activities in the UK and abroad. ‘I passed through the Movement as my parents were involved,’ he recalls. ‘Father was a Group Scout Leader and Mother was District Badge Secretary. I’ve always enjoyed helping people out, not just in Scouting.’ As member of the Borough Scout Committee he organises a publicity trailer at events to develop Scouting in the Borough. i.SCOUT because… I love meeting people from a wide range of cultural backgrounds and seeing Members enjoying passing through the Movement and develop into responsible young adults.

Jean Major – Bar to the Silver Acorn Since becoming a warranted leader with Derryloran in 1975, Jean has given tremendous service to Scouting in various capacities. She moved seamlessly from Assistant Cub Scout Leader through to Assistant County Commissioner Cubs without losing her enthusiasm for the section. When appointed District Commissioner for Mid-Ulster in 2003 she accepted providing she retain some of her responsibilities as Assistant County Commissioner Cubs. Indeed it is debatable whether the Cub Scout section in Northern Ireland has ever had such a champion. Alvin Walker – Silver Acorn The 1st Donaghadee Sea Scouts will celebrate their centenary this year and it is therefore appropriate that this milestone is marked with an award to Alvin Walker. Throughout his 40-year association with the Group he has held the posts of Cub Leader, Scout Leader, Venture Scout Leader and Group Scout Leader – on one occasion, all at the same time. He is a constant source of encouragement to Scouts attending local, national and international events. A great believer in building bridges Alvin has forged a healthy partnership with the local sailing club and made links with Troops in Texas and the Republic of Ireland. i.SCOUT because... nothing compares to introducing young people to camping, canoeing and sailing. Being able to help our Scouts develop skills in these activities is very rewarding. I still enjoy all that Scouting has to offer. Helen Hobbs – Silver Acorn A chance request to help out as a Treasurer was the beginning of a 25-year adventure for Helen Hobbs – which shows no sign of ending. She continues to look after the finances of one of the largest and most successful Groups in the country – the 26th Bristol (Northcote). Helen assisted in the management and financing of a £50,000 rebuilding project to transform their Scout building for the next generation. She also took the time to train herself to revamp and run the Group website. Not surprisingly for an outdoor enthusiast she mentions a ‘fantastic’ trip to Kandersteg with 50 Scouts as a particular highlight. i.SCOUT because… of the expression you see on Scouts’ faces when they have done something adventurous, and knowing you have contributed to making that happen.

Good Service Awards Applications for Good Service can be submitted at any time of the year and if approved, the Chief Scout’s Commendation for Good Service, Award for Merit and its Bar are awarded usually within six weeks of application being received. Applications for the Silver Wolf, Silver Acorn and its Bar are usually considered for inclusion in the St George’s Day Awards list, although they can be requested ‘out of season’ given exceptional circumstances. Nominations that are made by Headquarters for members of staff or some County/Area Appointments for their service to Scouting occur once a year within the St George’s Day Awards.

Meritorious Conduct Awards

Awards for gallantry are made by the Chief Scout for acts which would normally include an element of personal risk. There are three levels of award – The Bronze Cross, The Silver Cross and The Gilt Cross. In 2009 The Bronze Cross, the highest award of the Association for gallantry, granted for special heroism or action in the face of extraordinary risk, was not awarded.

Awards for meritorious conduct are made by the Chief Scout for conduct involving a high degree of courage, endurance, initiative or devotion to duty, often under suffering, without necessarily involving any element of risk. There are two levels of award – The Medal for Meritorious Conduct and The Chief Scout’s Commendation for Meritorious Conduct.
