Reflecting on God’s Word When we think of Christ the King, we usually do not think of Jesus hanging on the cross, but rather the risen Christ, seated at the right hand of the Father, wearing the crown bestowed upon him by the Father. But Luke presents us with an image of Christ whose reign begins on the cross with his promise of Paradise to a thief hanging at his side. Jesus brings about the kingdom even in the last moment of his life, extending the mercy of God to yet another nameless outsider, a thief “condemned justly” to death (Luke 23:41). This man recognizes Jesus both as a man who “has done nothing criminal,” but also one who is about to “come into [his] kingdom” (23:41, 42). The kingdom of God that Jesus proclaimed as being “already in your midst” is present in Jesus on the cross, extending mercy by asking God to forgive those who have crucified him, for “they know not what they do” (23:34). To the thief who asks Jesus to remember him when he comes into his kingdom, Jesus promises, “Today you will be with me in Paradise” (23:43). What wonderful words to bring the church year to a close. We might think of this dying thief as one who stole heaven at the last moment, but perhaps that is inaccurate. How could it be a theft when Paradise was there for the taking? The crucified One himself being the king of hearts, the shepherd king lifted up one last time a beloved sheep who had wandered far astray but unexpectedly found himself at heaven’s door. Reflexionemos sobre la Palabra de Dios

Cuando pensamos en Cristo Rey casi nunca nos lo imaginamos colgado de la cruz sino resucitado y sentado a la derecha del Padre, llevando sobre su cabeza la corona que el Padre le concedió. Pero Lucas nos presenta una imagen de Cristo, cuyo reino comienza en la cruz con la promesa del paraíso al malhechor que estaba crucificado a su lado. Jesús trae el reino aun en los últimos momentos de su vida extendiendo la misericordia de Dios a un desconocido anónimo, un malhechor condenado a muerte por “lo que merecen” (Lucas 23:41). Este hombre reconoce a Jesús como el hombre que “no ha hecho nada malo” y también como el que vendrá “como rey” (23:41, 42). El reino de Dios que Jesús proclama “ya está entre ustedes” y está presente en Jesús en la cruz, que extiende su misericordia al pedirle a Dios que perdone a aquellos que lo han crucificado, pues ellos “no saben lo que hacen” (23:34). Al malhechor que le pide que se acuerde de él cuando venga como rey, Jesús le promete: “hoy estarás conmigo en el paraíso” (23:43). Qué palabras más hermosas para cerrar el año de la Iglesia. Podríamos pensar que este malhechor se robó el cielo a última hora, pero tal vez eso sea incorrecto. ¿Cómo sería un robo si el paraíso estaba ahí disponible? Jesús crucificado, pastor y rey de los corazones, carga por última vez en la tierra a una oveja amada que se había alejado, pero que de buenas a primeras y sin esperarlo se encuentra a las puertas del cielo. Instead of looking at the Ten Commandments as being restrictive and telling us what we can’t do, look at them as guides for living a joy-filled and peaceful life. Most of our problems arise when we put our own needs first or spend most of our time trying to acquire “things”. Try putting God first in all things instead.

Classes are held most Sunday afternoons of the year (Sept. – May), from 3:15 pm - 4:45 pm, in the Parish Education Building. Each grade has its own curriculum, classroom, and team of adult volunteer catechists. Registration is required and must be completed each year.

Ushers/Hospitality Ministry Ushers are very much needed for all English masses! This is a wonderful way to serve and contribute, even for busy people. You might think that ushers mostly take up the offering during mass, but their ministry involves much more than this. Some places call them Ministers of Hospitality, because their primary role in the gatherings of the community is to serve as the welcoming and accommodating presence of the community for everyone who is attending the particular service. Cajun Fried Turkeys! Knights of Columbus Council 8024 will be selling their traditional Cajun Fried Turkeys this weekend after all Masses. Turkeys will be $45/each this year. Annual Thanksgiving Dinner St. Cyril will host its 31st Annual Thanksgiving Dinner for the Homeless on Thanksgiving Day. Since 1986 St. Cyril has hosted this event for men, women and children from area homeless shelters. Year after year it has been made possible through the generous support of our parishioners. • Bring non-perishable food donations, such as cranberry sauce, canned corn, dinner rolls, pumpkin and apple pies, cakes, sugar-free and regular cookies, regular and diet soda, etc., to Room 121 on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 4 PM to 9 PM. • Bring cooked food donations, such as casseroles, sliced turkey and ham in nonreturnable containers, to Room 121 on Thursday, Nov. 24, 6 AM to 9 AM. Come to volunteer. Volunteers are asked to bring a bag of non-perishable food items, which will be donated to the food bank at St. Joseph’s, in downtown. Thank you for your generous support. Pavos Fritos estilo Cajún Los Caballeros de Colon del Consejo 8024 estarán vendiendo sus tradicionales Pavos Fritos este domingo al salir de todas las Misas. El costo será de $45 por pavo este año. Cena Anual de Acción de Gracias San Cirilo llevara a cabo su 31ª Cena Anual de Acción de Gracias para los Desamparados el día de Acción de Gracias. Desde 1986, San Cirilo ha llevado a cabo este evento para hombres, mujeres y niños de albergues cercanos para desamparados. Cada año es posible gracias al apoyo generoso de nuestros feligreses. •
