Halloween is the eve of Hallowmass, better known to modern Christians as All Saints’ Day. Hallowmass celebrates God’s harvesting into heaven the faithful of every age, culture and walk of life. It is a day of glorious rejoicing. Saints are people who, by their joyful
service, have extended the love of God to
others. The Roman martyrology—the list of the saints officially recognized as such by the church—contains over ten thousand names. And those are only the saints whose names we remember! All Saints’ Day also remembers those holy people whom no one but God any longer knows. The reading for the day from the Book of Revelation describes “a great multitude that no one could count.” The abundance of the harvest of souls is perfectly suited to observance in the northern hemisphere in late autumn. That’s why in North America All Saints’ Day and Halloween are brightened with corn shocks, pumpkins, apples, nuts and other signs of nature’s bounty. The American tradition of Halloween ghost-and-goblin madness comes from Celtic lands, where the spirits of the dead were thought to roam the earth for one night before winter began. To ward off their fear of the supernatural, people sat around huge bonfires, telling stories and sharing the fruits of the harvest. Children were sent round to beg for fuel for the fire. Although the practice of “trick-or-treating” has its roots in pre-Christian Celtic tradition, it would be a mistake to write off the practice as devil worship. In Christ, all things have been made new. And so we dress as ghosts and goblins to laugh at the devil, who has lost ultimate power over God’s beloved children. We are in need of adult volunteers to help teach English as a Second Language (ESL), Cultural Orientation, Driver’s Permit Test Classes and Citizenship classes. Absolutely no prior experience is necessary. This is a great opportunity to work with refugees from all around the world that are rebuilding their lives here in Milwaukee. This program depends on volunteers to run and the need now is greater than ever. Our classes are very laid back and a lot of fun. We guarantee you will learn as much from our students as they learn from you. Contact our ESL Coordinator, JoAnn Bouikidis at 414-771-2881 or via email at:

Welcome to St. Catherine of Alexandria and St. Joan of Arc
Greetings from Christian formation: Family and Youth Programs
Many of our Confirmation Candidates were on retreat the weekend of October 15 and 16. The retreat concluded with the 10:30 am. Mass at St. Joan of Arc. Fr. Mike invited two of our Confirmation Candidates, Sophia Fenger and Jack Novotny, to assist in the homily. We learned that in order to do the work of God we need each other. When we are tired, we lean on one another; our faith community will help us towards victory.
This Sunday our Family Program welcomes Dr. Praveen Parboteah as our guest speaker. Professor Parboteeah is the inaugural COBE Distinguished Professor and Director of the Doctorate of Business Administration program at the University of Wisconsin in Whitewater. He has received numerous teaching awards and is included in multiple editions of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. He has published over 45 publications in the field’s top journals such as the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, and Organization Science. He reviews regularly for many of the field’s top journals and is a member of the editorial board of Journal of World Business and Management International Review, two of the top journals in international management. He is also an editorial board member of the Journal of Business Ethics, the leading business ethics journal. In Pope Francis’s Encyclical on the Family, The Joy of Love, he addresses how parents need to be solid in their ethical formation with children. Parents must do so with in the framework of our Catholic values keeping the importance of dignity and justice for all in the equation. Dr. Parboteah will engage parents in various group exercises that explore critical, ethical questions. As parents, we then ask ourselves, are we doing enough? Greetings from holly cerveny ~ principal at st. Joan of arc school Dear Friends, Thank you so much to all who donated baked goods for our sale this past weekend and also to those of you who purchased items to support the sale. The display looked beautiful and I look forward to being able to share the amount raised soon. Thank you also to the families that participated in the walk. There is nothing like the sight of all of those supporters of Catholic education walking together in support of our schools. Inside of our classrooms, students in grades 3K-‐2nd participated in a field trip to Ebert’s Pumpkin Farm. The students attended a play, completed art projects using seasonal harvest and even got to bring home a pumpkin. Thank you to Ebert’s and to our chaperones for helping with this field trip. For the last couple of weeks, the 1st and 2nd grade children have been participating in a program called Sprouting Together. The program is presented by our parishioner, Ms. Connie Holzmiller, and includes multiple lessons related to gardening and healthy eating. This week, they learned about composting, worms, living soil and more! Please enjoy these photos from the activities they have been participating in. Thank you to Connie Holzmiller for bringing this program to our school students. Coming up on Friday, October 28, we will have a Halloween Party for families including a trunk-‐or-‐treat, chili cook-‐off, and dessert-‐making contest. Trunk-‐or-‐treat begins at 6:30 p.m. and the party ends at 9 p.m. We hope to see some of you join in the fun. This year the party will be held at St. Joan of Arc both outside and in the Multipurpose Room. Don’t forget about our Dinner Auction on Saturday, November 12. The Dinner Auction, “One Bread, One Body”, will be held at The Delafield Hotel. Invitations were sent and should have been received. Should you need extra invitations, they are available in the school office. Please feel free to call or email and we will be glad to provide one or more for you. Autumn Blessings! Mrs. Holly Cerveny

Unity Prayer Bowl One-of-a-kind Auction Item Pope Francis has a prayer called “The 5-Finger Prayer”. This has inspired a new school marketing campaign and a unique never-been-done-before symbolic art project. Karen Norris, artist and local business owner of Our Creative Outlet in Sussex, is currently creating a work of art similar to this photo. What’s unique about it is it contains the hand traces of the holy people that support and guide us. What makes it extra special is the men who have so willingly and supportively “given a hand” to the efforts of this project. We have the hand traces of Father Mike, Deacon Larry, Father Chuck and Father Loehr all happy to help. But that’s not where it ends. Then Father Tom and Father Yockey from St. Jerome’s contributed along with Father Ken from St. Charles making this a “special moment in time” for the whole Lake Country area. Just those are special enough, but then Archbishop Listecki wanted to help, so we got his hand trace as well! Now just this week, in the midst of his crazy schedule, we were thrilled to received Cardinal Dolan’s help and hand trace all the way from New York! There are even more hands being added as we speak! Each of them have signed their name on their hand trace and some even wrote a special message in support of our efforts. All of the traces and signatures will be bound in a book to accompany the bowl. This has truly been a humbling experience to receive the support of these busy, energetic, holy leaders in our church. It really symbolizes the way we are all interconnected. The bowl will be listed on the mobile bidding site once the artist has finished it. Go to http://sjoa16.gesture.com to bid starting on November 7th.
