February Virtue - Fortitude (The Third Cardinal Virtue) From Disciple of Christ Educator Guide: Fortitude, represented by armor, is the virtue of strength. Its very name is Latin for “strength.” Fortitude enables a baptized person to stand firm when sufferings come. It is the armor that guards our soul’s deep desire to love God and to serve Him, even if martyrdom should be the cost. Scripture: Romans 8:35-37 “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ: Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, ‘For thy sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as wheep to be slaughtered.’ No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” Week

Scripture Reflection

Saint Focus - Sts. Cyril & Methodius, St. Philip Neri, St. Paul Miki, St. Gianna Molla

Challenge and/or Goal

Jan. 30

“Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power.” Ephesians 6:10

Sts. Cyril (825-869) and Methodius (826-884) were brothers, grew up in Greece, and went to Russia as missionaries. They learned the Slavonic languages and translated the Scriptures. They celebrated the Catholic liturgy and sacraments in ways that the people could understand.

Fortitude is the moral virtue that ensures firmness in difficulties and constancy in the pursuit of good.

Feb. 6

“A clean heart create for me, God; renew within me a steadfast spirit.” Psalm 51:12

In 16th-century Rome, many people, even some leaders in the Church, were falling away from God. St. Philip Neri (15156-1595) devoted his life to bringing all whom he could persuade back to the true Church. Though the task of converting the city seemed impossible for one person, St. Philip Neri trusted that God would use him to do great things for the Church

It strengthens the resolve to resist temptations and to overcome obstacles in the moral life.

Feb. 13

“Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as for the Lord and not for others, knowing that you will receive from the Lord the due payment of the inheritance…” Colossians 3:23-24

St. Paul Miki (1564-1597) was persecuted with others by the Japanese government. He was captured and sentenced to death. He prayed that God would forgive his captors, and he told those standing nearby at his crucifixion to ask Christ to help them become happy.

It enables one to conquer fear, even fear of death and to face trials and persecutions.

Feb. 20

“... I have the strength for everything through hi who empowers me.” Philippians 4:11-13

St. Gianna Molla (1922-1962) was an Italian physician and mother. After she became pregnant with her fourth child, doctors discovered that Gianna needed surgery to save her life. She opted for the safest surgery to secure the life of her child, even if that might mean the loss of her own life. And so it did. After the little one was born, St. Gianna died from her disease, having born great sufferings with heroic patience.

It disposes one to renounce and sacrifice their life in defense of a just cause.

FATHER-DAUGHTER DANCE The 2017 Father-Daughter Dance at St. Charles hosted by St. Charles Girl Scout Troops is on Friday, February 10th from 7:00-9:00 pm. You can purchase SCRIP as well as find out about some of the exciting new things that are happening with our SCRIP program. SCRIP Rebate Statements - If you purchased SCRIP between June 1 and December 31, you should have received a SCRIP Rebate Statement. If you have a St. Charles school student, the statement was sent home with your student on Friday, January 20. If you don't have a student, you can pick up your statement at the SCRIP sales table. Be sure to sign your statement before turning it in. Remember, this statement is just like cash, it is important to keep it in a safe place until you are ready to use it.
