ST. IGNATIUS CATHOLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER February 26th, 2015

Volume 8, Issue 6 www.st-ignatius.com Instaurare Omnia In Christo

ART: PAINTING, DRAWING, WEAVING, PRINTING, CRAFTS & MORE “It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.” - Pablo Picasso Dear Parents, This month our newsletter highlights the subject of Art. Creativity is encouraged and promoted right from the very start of school here at St. Ignatius. As part of the creative curriculum Nursery gives children the opportunity to paint, draw and make things with a wide range of media all day and every day. An area where children can explore with paint and glue, glitter, buttons and sequins, as well as modelling from empty boxes, is set up for children to access. Their work is celebrated and the displays in Nursery and Reception are testimony to this. Of course Art remains an integral part of the curriculum in Year 1 – Year 6. Children are again allowed to explore and they are introduced to various skills and the work of famous artists. Often the artwork will be approached in a cross curricular way; in Religious Education our children have looked at famous paintings of the Last Supper and depicted the gifts from the Magi in the style of Gustav Klimt. Techniques of perspective are explored in Year 4, Year 1 have been working on tone, and Year 6 have been looking at the colour wheel in terms of creating mood in painting. Key Stage 1 children are able to attend, where space allows, the painting after school club. At Key Stage 2 the Wednesday Art club, run by Mrs. Hickey, have been weaving and printing. Sewing and crafts are taught in Miss Campbell’s sewing club and beautiful fish have been made! We enter a whole range of competitions, from the Christmas Stamp Design for the Cayman Post Office, the Watercolours calendar, Pirates Week posters, and T-shirt competitions, often with much success. Last year we mounted the Early years Art Exhibition in Loyola Hall, and we intend to do this again. This year it will take part on the evening of Wednesday, April 29th, from 4:00-6:00 pm. You are all invited to come along… please save the date! - Mrs. Veronica Heffernan, Head of Primary - Mr. Peter Embleton, Head of Secondary Top right: Ela proudly displays her creation. Thank you to our corporate partners for all that they do for our school! Phone: (345) 949-9250

The Lenten Journey - Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving As children enter the secondary school, Art is taught as a discrete subject by subject specialists; skills and knowledge are developed. At Key Stage 3 the emphasis is on exposing the students to a range of media and experimentation in working on a range of different outcomes. In Key Stage 4 Art is an option subject and every year we get a selection of great students who choose this subject to study at IGCSE level. At this level students’ work becomes more self-directed with students developing preferences for the media and style of Art with which they wish to express themselves. The students have to produce a coursework project using their own chosen theme and then practice for an 8 hour examination. In the Sixth Form students can choose to study the subject at AS and A Level. We have had many extremely talented students on these courses. They have always contributed to wonderful Art Shows, entered and won competitions, generally contributing greatly to the reputation of the school. A number of these students have gone on to study Art in further education:  In 2005 Tonie Chisholm (the newly crowned Miss Cayman) attended the Plymouth College of Art to study film production.  In 2007 Jessica Willis won the inaugural ‘Deutsche Bank Scholarship’ to study Graphic Design at Savannah College of Art.  In 2009 Rhon Royer went to Harding University to study Interior Design.  In 2010 Rachelle Rivers went to Savannah College of Art to study Graphic Design; she is currently working as a junior graphic designer at Fountainhead.  In 2011 Marcie Wood, another recipient of the ‘Deutsche Bank Scholarship”, went to Swindon College to study Illustration.

The Lenten Journey - Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving  Also in 2011 Jade Pope was accepted to Teeside University to study BA Computer Character Animation.  In 2013 Richelle Hew went to Leeds College of Art to undertake a Fountain Art Course before undertaking a BA in Graphic Design in Leeds.  In 2014 we saw Tiana Bush enrol in University of North Carolina to study Art Education.  Also in 2014 Ryan Kyberd headed for the University of East London to study Architecture. We are immensely proud of all of our young artists and wish them every success in pursuing their careers. During each year, many of the secondary school exhibitions are mounted for all to enjoy. One of the highlights of our school calendar is the Art Exhibition which is normally held in the Music rooms on a Sunday evening in Feburary. Here the work from our young artists (generally in Years 10-13) is displayed for public viewing. The range and quality is remarkable and is always well received by the increasing number of visitors.

CARRIE AWARDED ‘CHIEF GIRL GUIDE’ Year 12 student Carrie McCoy has recently been honoured with the award of Chief Girl Guide, the first girl ever in Cayman (and possibly in the Caribbean) to accomplish this! The Chief Guide's Challenge is the second highest award that members can work towards in guiding. A young woman who has gained the Chief Guide's Challenge has reached a high standard in areas such as: community action, creativity, leadership, personal values, independent living, and more. Carrie has also demonstrated her ability in the following:  To set targets to develop her skills in an area of her choice and, through selfassessment, achieve them.  To communicate effectively with individuals and groups.  To work with others by discussing, setting and achieving her targets with an appropriate peer group, her peers having to ratified her self-assessment for her achievement.  To apply finance management skills by working within a budget and maximising available funds, equipment and facilities to achieve her targets.  To complete a challenging task, Above: Carrie is pinned as ‘Chief Girl Guide’, as Governor Helen displaying commitment a n d Kilpatrick does the honours in a ceremony in the St. Ignatius Courtyard. SPRING FLING RAISES OVER $12,000 The Spring Fling (School Fair) took place after school on Thursday, February 12th. Estimates are that over 1000 people (and two ponies) attended during the afternoon. The teachers raised over $8000 at their stalls which will be used for classroom supplies and equipment. Nearly $4000 more was raised in support of ongoing upgrades to our science facilities. Attendees enjoyed a variety of games, entertainment, bargains, and the great food prepared by Mr. Gene Hydes and his wonderful team.

Spring Fling was all about food, fun, friends, fresh air, and a few Henna tattoos. Mr. Bentley had some good help in attracting customers to the frozen yogurt stall! More photos on next page >>> Phone: (345) 949-9250

A large group of Private School Students participated in the Inter School Squash Championships.

A huge well done to a dedicated group of St Ignatius Students, who on their day off school, all turned up bright and early for the Senior Inter Schools Squash Championships on February 13th. KS1 SPORTS DAY... ALL ABOUT HAVING FUN! On a wonderful Friday morning, February 6th, the Key Stage 1 students displayed their athletic talents for the annual Sports Day. All of the children had been practicing the events during spring term Physical Education lessons so they were able to perform to the best of their ability. Gathering outside the KG block for an opening prayer and some last minute instructions everyone was encouraged to do their best.

Top: Off to the races... the 40 metre sprints got everyone moving and there were many close finishes! Above: Zuri enjoyed all of the events and had great fun! Right: Cohen concentrates on doing his best during the obstacle course!

The theme of the day was ‘HAVING FUN!’, stressed by Mr. Clements as he sent all the eager athletes to try their hardest at the football kick, obstacle race and the 40 metre run. The large crowd of spectators were treated to excellent performances across the year levels in each of the events. There were some amazing kicks at the football event as well as some very close finishes in both the obstacle course and 40 metre races, some in fact so close they could be called photo finishes! At the end of the event there were some very tired athletes as they exhausted themselves with the day’s performances. Thanks so very much to all parents and family members who came out to support our KS1 students. Also a great big congratulations goes out to all competitors who came out, tried their best and showed that just “HAVING FUN!’ was the most important part of Sports Day. - PE Department

CAYMAN NATIONAL SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS A huge well done to the many St. Ignatius Students who were involved in the Cayman National Swimming Championships held at the Lions Pool over the half term break. FOURTH PLACE FOR TENACIOUS IGNATIUS Our amazing journey as the Under 11 St. Ignatius football team started five months ago and during the action packed season we have certainly had our ups and downs. All in all, it’s been great roller-coaster ride for everyone involved in the squad! Back in October we participated in ‘the rally’, a friendly tournament where all of the teams get to experience opponents’ gameplay. Then the season kicked off in earnest! All teams were most excited about participating in this fiercely competitive league. We faced a variety of different squads from across the island... and even one who travelled all the way from Cayman Brac! Some matches we won, and others were lost but we were one team throughout the journey — a journey which took us all the way to the semi-final! And what a thrilling game that was! On an extremely hot Saturday afternoon, in front of a sizeable crowd at the Annex, we faced our rivals, Cayman Prep. After a competitive and close run match, the deadlock was broken late into the second half with a scrappy goal from Nathan Tricket for Prep, an ex-St. Ignatius pupil. Despite our very best efforts and some fantastic play from both sides, we were out. However, our season was not quite over as we encountered Savannah in the playoff for third or fourth place. Although we had an excellent match, we were defeated by three goals to two after an exhilarating second half. Nevertheless, we were immensely proud to receive our 4th place medals and the 2014-15 season will live long in our memories. We hope that we have inspired new recruits to join our team next year who are determined to win the elusive first place trophy, under the wonderful leadership of our skilled and passionate leaders, Coach Paolo and Coach Kurt. We sincerely thank them both for giving their time so freely and enthusiastically. Thank you to all for supporting our team. We hope you have enjoyed watching us as much as we have enjoyed playing. - Written by U11 team members Kiefer Ebanks and Matthew Meghoo

SCHOOLS TRACK MEET

KIWANIS BIKE-A-THON

A few St. Ignatius students competed in an islandwide schools track meet just before the half term break. Our small contingent did very well, especially considering that they were up against large teams from the two government high schools!  Karim Murray finished 2nd in the U18 Boys 200m and 2nd in the U18 Boys Long jump; he was named as his division’s top male athlete (in spite of competing with an injured hamstring).  Rochel Gardener won the 100 m final in 12.81 and was named the top female athlete in the 18+ group.  Dante Baptiste earned a bronze medal in the U16 long jump and he finished 6th in the 100 m and 7th in the 200 m.  Javdon Nelson finished 4th in the 100 m finals while running with discomfort in his hamstring.  Jayde Solomon finished 7th in the U18 Shot Put. Congratulations to all of our students who took part and thank you for representing our school so well! - PE Department

Well done to the St. Ignatius students who completed the annual Kiwanis Bike-a-thon from Blow Holes to Smith Cove on Sunday, February 22nd. Also a huge thank you to the St. Ignatius Key Club Members who very ably manned one of the much-needed water stations along the route! - PE Department

YEAR 7 RETREAT: WHO IS MY NEIGHBOUR? On Monday, February 9th, Year 7 left school in the morning to go to the Prospect Retreat Centre. The purpose of the one day retreat was to reflect on the theme: Who is my neighbour? Based on the parable of the Good Samaritan, Year 7 engaged in thinking and reflective exercises to challenge themselves about how they could practically be like the ‘Good Samaritan’ in their lives. They came up with some fantastic responses! “I could use my hands to help my parents with chores in the house” and “I could use my mouth to say kind words to others who need a boost”. Together in groups they were challenged to build a bridge together that would uphold the Word of the Lord (the Bible). The winning team managed to hold two! It was a prayerful and fun-filled day. Thanks to Mr. DeCruz-Jones for all his hard work in organising everything!

Winners of the build a bridge competition!
