Spring 2014 Our wonderful Mums! On the Monday following Mother’s day, there was a special assembly intended to say thank you to our wonderful Mums. Each class gave a performance and sang songs to say thank you for everything our Mums do for us. The children blew their mums away by their wonderful singing. They really showed their Mums how much they love them. They sang delightful mother’s day songs including, My Mum’s One in a Million and Have a Day Off. After the assembly Mums were invited into their children’s classes to try out a workshop. In Key Stage one Mums took part in some wonderful activities. Reception made a picture frame with a drawing of their Mum. Year 1 were set the challenge of saving an egg from breaking when it was dropped by Mrs Chivers. Year 2 took their Mums into the forest to create some amazing natural sculptures in the style of Andy Goldsworthy. In Key Stage 2, Year 5 created some fashion disasters! Children designed a new outfit for their Mums using only plastic bags and newspaper. Genevieve Long said, “it was fun to put my Mum in a dress as she always refuses to wear them!” Year 6’s activity was definitely the messiest! Marshmallows and raw spaghetti were everywhere as they raced to build the tallest tower.

Year 4 made some beautiful origami paper flowers. “It was funny though”, says Kyla from Year 4. “Some of the boys were really enjoying making all the pretty flowers.” Year 3 went into the forest where they discovered letters from Fairies hanging from trees giving them tasks to do and things to make. Bobby Jagger told us, “it was so much fun to find the letters and make something with our Mums.” Holly Hunter added how exciting it was to make fairy houses. We hope our Mums feel pleased to be part of our school for the day.

The Great Fire of Rowledge !

Impressive fundraisers !

The Great Fire of Rowledge was a brilliant success. There were bangs and pops while the fire blazed on the cardboard houses that year 2 had made! The children built cardboard houses for their topic about the Great Fire of London. Mr Yates had the fantastic idea of burning the houses to teach Year 2 how easily the Great Fire of London spread.

At Rowledge School we have some amazing fundraisers who have been selling wristbands for charity. Georgie Rose in Year 5 sold her wristbands for Cancer Research UK. Georgie told us that she chose this charity as some of her family have suffered from cancer. She made the wristbands out of small coloured rubber bands and they took only 2 minutes each to make! Georgie managed to make over £40.00! We interviewed Georgie and she said,” I was happy with the amount of money I raised and would like to thank everyone who bought one.” We asked Georgie what inspired her to make the wristbands she said it was a birthday present and she liked the idea of making lots money for a good charity.

This very special event took place on the school field on Wednesday the 22nd of January in front of some very nervous and excited children. Sam in year 2 said, “It was fun, exciting, frightening and happy.’’ He told us that his favourite bit was when all the houses burnt away. Patrick said that he enjoyed watching the flames starting to burn down the line of houses and he was very excited just before the fire. Evie said, “It was a bit scary and just before I felt a bit nervous.” Evie said it was exciting seeing the last house burn down. The children even had to pass buckets of water along a line to demonstrate how people would have tried to put out the Great Fire of London.

Cameron Bellenger in Year 6 sold his wristbands for our school charity, FORS. Cameron made his wristbands out of Para cord and buckles. His wristbands are very special because you can unravel them and have 2 to 3 metres of cord which could help to save someone’s life in a rescue. Cameron raised over £60.00 and he’s still selling them! We asked Cameron why he chose FORS as his charity. He told us that his Mum and Dad said FORS is the best charity to choose because it’s for the school. We also asked him what inspired him to make the wristbands and he said that people at Weydon school have been selling things for their school so Cameron decided to have a go and raise lots of money for Rowledge. We are really proud of Georgie and Cameron’s hard work and hope they inspire other children to do more for charity.

A stack of lolly sticks

Year 5 Swanage trip

We all know that lolly sticks are boring. So why don’t we have some fun with them by making a bridge (well, a mini version)! On Monday 3rd February a group of Year 5 children went to St. Edmunds School to do just that on a Technology Challenge Day.

On the 18th of March 2014, Year 5 set off on a sightseeing coastal residential trip to Swanage. Luckily for them, it wasn’t raining. In fact the weather was good. After they had unpacked they walked to Ballard down on a walk full of staggering views which was a good warm up for their longest walk the next day.

The children had to build a mini bridge using only 200 lolly sticks and a roll of masking tape. Two teams went from Rowledge. Team one included: Ben, Laura, Max and Lily K. Team two was: Harry, Lydia, Rachel and Jacob. Both teams did amazingly well. They had the whole morning to build their bridges and after lunch they tested them by seeing how many weights their bridges could hold. Team One’s bridge held 3kg and Team Two’s bridge held a whopping 9kg! Team two also received a certificate for having the most interesting and attractive design. Laura, when asked if she enjoyed the day said, “Yes I had a very good time at St. Edmunds. I really enjoyed making the bridges and testing them with the weights. I think my team did very well, even though we didn’t win any prizes!” Every child who took part, were rewarded for their hard work with a little goodie bag containing a St. Edmunds calculator and ruler and key ring torch.

On the next day everybody was up for “The daddy of all the walks.” First on the walk they went to old Harrys rocks. “I am finally famous!” Harry Kefford in year 5 said. After they had lunch on the cliff and travelled by foot to Studland bay beach which was great for skimming stones. They studied the town of Swanage and Swanage train station. They stopped at the church to see what was different about Saint Mary’s church to Saint James church. Year 5 will be studying Farnham to compare it to the features of Swanage. Year 5 really enjoyed their trip to Swanage and hope year 4 enjoyed it as much next year.

Intercultural

Impressive Intercultural Week! Want to find out more about other people who share our world? Just ask! Rowledge School had a unique and fantastic Intercultural Week, learning all about different countries. Mrs Tongman had obviously been practising her dance skills as she taught us the traditional moves of our country. Reception class showed us the way to dance the Conga! Learning about the Caribbean has more to it than just golden beaches and delicious cocktails! Boo Watkins in Year R told us eagerly, “The Caribbean dance was lots of fun. The food was delicious, we’ve been eating bananas, coconuts and drinking coconut milk!” Messy is Year 6’s middle name! La Tomatina (tomato) took place on the field. This is a special event in which everyone throws tomatoes at each other. In Spain, tomatoes are grown to be specially ripe and soft for this occasion. Posters all around school had detailed the rules. Year 5 had been learning all about the style of Indian. During the celebration assembly they showed us an amazing picture of decorated elephants which they had put together. In India, every year, a festival takes place and real elephants are painted with wonderful patterns. We caught up with Jack Raby and asked him what he had enjoyed the most. He said, “Making and eating naan bread because I love devouring my food, I even ate the dip I don’t like.”

Week In Year 1, Tess Porter’s favourite thing was learning how to write numbers in Nepalese. Mrs Gurung amazingly arranged for a Year 1 class from Nepal to become penpals with Year 1 in Rowledge! Year 2 showed us the way to party as they danced around the school doing the biggest event in the world: Carnival! Beautiful colours represent the Amazon Rainforest and it’s array of exotic animals. Evie Rose said, “My favourite part was learning how to say good morning (Bondia!)” In Year 3 Lucy Thomson’s favourite part was making and decorating their Chinese fish. The fish, according to the Chinese, is very lucky. Performing a Kung-Fu dance made Year 3 ready for anything! “Learning about Brazil’s workdays was the best part for me!” said Max Davis. Brazil was shared by both Year 2 and Year 4 and they enjoyed getting together for some of their activities. Intercultural Week is always an exciting event but this year’s seem to have that extra special Wow factor!

EXPELIARMUS!!!!! On the first day of the Spring Term, Year 5 found out that they were doing a topic on Harry Potter for a whole term by getting a letter posted through their door with a ticket to Hogwarts! Unfortunately though, it wasn’t sent by owl. When they got back to school after the holidays, they got put into different houses which are the houses from Hogwarts, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin, by picking a different colour out of a bag. They also found out that they were going on an exciting trip to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter also known as the Warner Bros Studios. The trip on the coach to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter was about an hour but it was worth the wait. The children first saw the Great Hall and the costumes and wigs. Then they saw some of the film sets like the boy’s dormitory and Dumbledore’s office and lots more. They were also taken behind the scenes for a workshop. When asked what you enjoyed and why, Tilly Heron (Y.5) said, “I really enjoyed the workshop because it was fun and I learnt how long it actually takes the make a film!” We also asked Mrs Holmes (one of the Y.5 teachers) why she decided to take Y.5 on the trip. She explained, “We were studying The Harry Potter books in the spring term and were comparing them to the films. This was the perfect way to combine to two. Also Mrs Tongeman and myself thought it would be really good fun!” Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed their trip as well as learning about the Harry Potter books. We hope Year 4 enjoy the trip as well.

World book day World book day this year was on Thursday the 6th of March 2014 and it was a sensational time for Rowledge School. World book day gets people together from all around the world to share their love of reading. To celebrate World Book Day each class focused on a different author including Roald Dahl, Terry Deary, and Andy Stanton. All of the classes loved learning about their chosen author and were excited to know more about them and how they work. Children took part in various activities including writing, art actives and drawing like their authors illustrators. Year 2, 4 and 5 looked at Charlie and the Chocolate factory because it was the 50th anniversary of its publication. Year 2 designed a chocolate making machine and Y4 created new sweets and a marketing campaign.

Superb Sport Relief! Think how lucky we are. Children in Africa have to fight for the right to go to school and even when they do get the chance they sometimes have to walk miles to get there and back every day. In Africa, this can be a normal day for children. School is not always a possibility for many and without education they will not get a job and earn money to live. This sport relief, we raised money to try to help create a happier life, where children can go to school every day! On Friday 28th March Rowledge School made a great effort to help this great charity. Year 6 set up stalls in the playground asking for small donations for children to take part in their games. Jessica Barry, from Year 6, told us about her stall.” We did a netball shoot-out. Our highest contribution was £1.” Also a few fabulous children in Year 3 had their own way of raising money. Taking a lonely rabbit from home, they transformed into a pick-the-name-out-of-thepencil-case rabbit. Lots of names were entered, but only one lucky person could win. And that was to be Katie from Year 3 with the name Fluffy! The stalls were not the only exciting thing. The whole school took part in running around the forest to raise money by being sponsored . It also tired us all out! Even Mrs Welton ran! Totalling up the final amount, we reached an amazing £980 for this great charity. Thank you to everyone for supporting and helping us!

Have a go at our Easter competition Your challenge is to create an Easter picture. The picture can be in any form and any size. You may like to use paint, pastels, colouring pencils or even make a collage! You have until the 2nd week of next term, to complete and post your picture in the Rowledge Racket box in the entrance hall. The best picture from KS1 and KS2 will be announced in assembly and will receive a prize!! Anyone can enter, and remember… it’s all about taking part and not all about winning!! You can even work with a friend if you want to. Don’t forget to put your name and class on the back. The judge is the Easter bunny!! The Easter Bunny will sadly not join us in assembly, but your pictures will be sent to Easter Island and he will see your artwork!! He will then send the pictures back to us and will tell us who won! Have fun and enjoy!!

Easter Bonnets!!! In support of a very important charity, Brian Tumour Research we all wore hats to school on Thursday 3rd April. The hats were amazing and some of them had chocolate eggs and Easter chicks on them. Mrs Welton and Ms Oliver judged the best ones in each class and the winners were given an Easter egg. Later on Thursday the children paraded their hats around the school to each class. We raised over £100 for the charity and we hope to get even more money from the badges that are for sale in the office for £1.00 each.
