March, 2015

Broad Run High School

BRHS families, I am writing this newsletter submission as we are on our 12th ‘snow day’. What a winter it has been. Lots of snow and cold. I know we all are looking forward to warmer weather and spring break, which starts March 27th, is also the last day of the 3rd quarter. On March 27th we will welcome our rising 9th graders for a ‘Activity Expo’ in the morning. We will have our spring musical, concerts, and a number of other activities through April, May and June. Please be sure and check the school calendar. We are in the process of finishing up course selections for the 2015-2016 school year. A copy of your child’s course selections will come home with report cards on April 15th. Please review these. As the spring continues, I will staff the school based on student requests. If students change their minds and areas have already been staffed, then we may not be able to accommodate the change, even if it is communicated before June 25th. Senior packet information will be posted on the school web site by Spring Break. I will also send out a connectED to seniors and parents with the information. It is important to review these dates, graduation info, etc… I am looking forward to our Spring Sports season, and all of our other activities through the end of the year. Hope to see you at a BRHS event. Dave Spage

Advanced Placement Exams

All students enrolled in AP courses may have chosen to take the national AP exams which will occur from May 4th to May 15th. AP teachers distributed a bulletin with exam dates and times to their students and will continue to provide excellent preparation for these exams.

Course Registration for 2015-2016 In the past, a Program of Studies booklet has been provided to every student. Beginning last year, the Program of Studies can be found on the front pages of the LCPS and BRHS web sites http://www.lcps.org/site/Default.aspx?PageID=1910. Looking through this information prior to registering for classes for the next year will help students make good decisions about which courses are suited best for them. Through the School Counseling Department, each student has an opportunity to make informed decisions about course selection for the upcoming year. Throughout the second semester, students engage in several opportunities, including the Electives/AP Fair, Curriculum Night, teacher recommendation process, group and individual meetings with counselors, which ensure that each student is on track for graduation, has clearly articulated goals, and selects the most appropriate courses. Throughout February and March, all students will have an individual conference with their counselors and bring home important information for parents. Please select your courses wisely and make any changes to your selections by the deadline of June 24, 2015.

Attention JUNIORS!

If you are interested in English 12 dual enrollment, please turn in your forms to Ms. Hale in the school counseling office immediately. While the deadline has passed, due to the number of snow days we have experienced, we will continue to accept them. Applications to attend Monroe Technology Center for the 2015-2016 school year are available both online www.lcps.org/mtc and in the School Counseling Office. The deadline for applications is March 20, but do not delay as there are a few parts to the application (including the VPT placement tests which are required for certain programs)!

Debate

Announcements

Debaters and Speakers Heading off to Ft. Lauderdale and Kentucky for National Tournaments Despite having to brave a total travel time of 20 hours on bus and train, as well as eight feet of snow and a blizzard that shut down competition for a whole day, Valentine’s Day weekend proved to be a sweetheart deal for six members of Broad Run’s Debate & Speech team, as they traveled to Harvard, where they secured invitations to the Tournament of Champions at the University of Kentucky in April. For the first time in its history, Broad Run is sending competitors to what is considered the Super Bowl of debate tournaments. The Tournament is considered the national championship of the “National Circuit,” to which debaters must apply to compete, and is considered the most prestigious and competitive American high school debate tournament. Stellar performances at last week’s 41st Annual Harvard National Forensics Tournament provided three of the debaters with their final, requisite “bids” to Kentucky. Representing Broad Run High School and Loudoun in Lexington, Kentucky, will be the two Policy Debate teams of Rahul Soni & Rittwik Dhar and Michael Logue & Joey Konrad; and Congressional Debaters Alissa Wang and Colleen Chrisman Colleen, Rahul, and Rittwik qualified in January). To qualify for the Tournament of Champions, all six had to place high enough in the standings at a minimum of two National Circuit tournaments over the past six months; they accomplished this at competitions in Philadelphia, Wake Forest University, Georgetown Day School, and Harvard University. In the past 15 years, only two Northern Virginia schools have fully qualified for the tournament, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology and, now, Broad Run. Broad Run is the only school in the region in the past 25 years to qualify multiple teams in the same year. For the Spartans, our attention will be on Lexington, Kentucky, the weekend before the Kentucky Derby. As the national tournament season heats up, it looks like more Spartans will be travelling a bit as the school year nears its end. Speech squad members, Anne Marie DeRosa, Anna Myers, Jenna Casamiquella, Oriana Figueroa, Kate Himler, and Rose Chrisman competed at the WashingtonArlington Catholic Forensic League (WACFL) Metro Finals on Saturday, February 28th at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Olney, Maryland. Co-Captain Kate Himler placed 6th in Impromptu and Rose Chrisman was a Finalist in Oral Interpretation. Rose and Anna (Declamation) both qualified to compete at the Grand National Tournament in Ft. Lauderdale over Memorial Day weekend. Co-Captains Rose and Kate are also alternates in Duo Interpretation, and may yet end up at Nationals.
