Welcome to SWC

CHOOSING WHERE YOU WANT TO TRAIN FOR YOUR FUTURE CAREER IS A BIG (AND EXCITING!) STEP, AND WE KNOW THAT YOU NEED AS MUCH INFORMATION AND ADVICE AS POSSIBLE TO HELP YOU MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION. To help you with your decision we will be holding Open Events throughout the year so that you can come and take a look around the College’s facilities, such as the hairdressing salons and motor vehicle workshops. The facilities reflect real life working environments, enabling you to gain the practical skills which employers are looking for.

At the Open Events our teaching staff will be available for you to chat to. They are experts in their field, and are passionate about providing you with excellent training. At SWC you can choose from a range of training programmes including Apprenticeships, which involve you spending the majority of your week in a work placement, and attending College

for either one day a week or on block placement, and full-time courses, which are generally run over three days each week.

Work experience is an important part of many of our courses, helping you to gain more valuable skills. SWC has some great links with local employers meaning that there will be opportunities to do work experience in a wide range of settings.

With many other advantages including small class sizes, free breakfasts for full-time students, excellent transport links to get you to and from College, and the hub (the centre of the student social life at SWC!), you can look forward to an exciting and rewarding next step towards your chosen career!

Get real work experience

I think College has prepared me for employment in lots of ways. I now have good customer service skills, more confidence when working with clients, an ability to be tactful with clients and much better time management skills.

Choosing a course

CHOOSING THE RIGHT COURSE IS A HUGE DECISION. GETTING IT RIGHT MEANS THAT YOU CAN LOOK FORWARD TO AN ENJOYABLE, REWARDING FUTURE CAREER.

If you do not know what you want to study at College you are not unusual! Many people who would like to join a college course are undecided about which subject to study. To help you choose a subject, think about the hobbies you enjoy and the interests you have. Do you enjoy practical activities, or prefer to sit at a desk? Are you creative? Do you like to mix with new people or do you prefer to work alone? Answers to these types of questions can help you with your decision about which subject to study. Once you have chosen which subject you would like to study you can find about the courses on offer, in your chosen subject, on our website www.sworcs.ac.uk. Alternatively you can call us on (01386) 712600 and we will post a subject leaflet out to you.

The next step is for you to come to College and find out if you like the look of SWC. You can come along to a Taster Day, where you can try out a mini course for half a day and experience being a student. You could also come along to an Open Event where you can have a chat with the tutors

about the subject which interests you and take a look around at the College’s facilities.

When you have decided which course to apply for complete the application form (in the back of this Guide) and post it in to the FREEPOST address. We will then invite you along to College for an interview where you will have the chance to ask questions about the courses, such as How many days a week do I come into College? What sort of things will I be doing on the course? How much of the course is practical and how much is based in a classroom? After a successful interview we will offer you a place on a course; this may be a full offer, or it may be dependent on your GCSE grades.

We will make applying to join a course as easy as possible for you, but if you have any questions our Learner Services Team are always happy to help, and can be contacted on Evesham (01386) 712601 or Malvern (01684) 565351.

Study a subject which interests you

I prefer the atmosphere at College to school and I think that’s because it was compulsory to attend school, whereas everyone who you study with at College has chosen to be here. 4 1

Leave the classroom behind!

BEING ON AN SWC COURSE ISN’T JUST ABOUT SITTING IN A CLASSROOM EVERY DAY.

As an SWC student you will enjoy enrichment activities as part of your course. Last year Sports students had a residential trip to the outdoor pursuits centre, Skern Lodge; Travel and Tourism students took part in Air Cabin Crew training in Birmingham; Public Services students assisted the local Fire and Rescue service with a chemical spillage training exercise, Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy students held a fashion show in aid of Cancer Research, and Motor Vehicle students had a stand at the UK Skills event, where they were joined by former Dragon’s Den celebrity Theo Paphitis! Throughout the year our students also enter national competitions, competing successfully against the very best from around the country. As an SWC student you will have many exciting opportunities outside of your course too. Getting together (and perhaps dressing up!) for events such as Comic Relief and Children in Need, and having a laugh with your friends, all for charity, will certainly make your time at SWC memorable. Water bomb competitions, walking the College sheep on a lead around the College, coming to College in onesies, hosting cake sales and leg waxing are just some of the fund raising activities which our students have organised over the past year. SWC offers you more than a qualification - you will leave College with many happy memories.
