English as a Foreign Language English as a Foreign Language (EFL) courses prepare students for all levels of the University of Cambridge ESOL examinations. South Chelsea College is accredited by the British Accreditation Council (BAC), as well as belonging to the Association of British Language Schools (ABLS). The College has a sponsorship licence under tier 4 of the United Kingdom Border Authority (UKBA) points-based immigration system. A variety of teaching techniques are used - students will work in pairs, in small groups and on a whole-class basis. The average class size is 10-15 pupils and we are delighted to have students from a wide range of different countries. The College is modern and well equipped, and where appropriate a range of language learning software is available in our extensive Computer Department.

English as a Foreign Language

The English as a Foreign Language Department at SCC is small enough to ensure care for the individual student but large enough to attract qualified and experienced teaching staff. Students are tested on arrival at the College to ensure they are placed in the most suitable class. Our experienced staff can arrange specialist classes for groups where requested, please contact the College to discuss your requirements. Situated in one of South London’s most diverse and cosmopolitan areas, with a lively entertainment scene, excellent sports facilities nearby, and a colourful street market, the College is directly opposite an underground station (Victoria Line) and only ten minutes away by tube from the West End (Oxford Circus).

South Chelsea College and School of English offers high-quality, affordable English Classes in a lively and trendy South London setting. We welcome both part-time and full-time students and our central location enables teachers to introduce students to many of the attractions of London within the course of their studies. In addition to classes during the academic year, the English Language Department runs an exciting summer programme, where language practice is combined with language learning activities around London. Students who require a visa to study in the UK must attend classes for a minimum of 15 hours a week and to study this subject they must apply from a country where English is not the designated first language. English classes are available at all levels from Intermediate to Advanced and Proficiency. The emphasis is on encouraging students to speak fluently as well as enabling them to achieve good levels of comprehension, writing and grammar.

Summer courses

SCC offers two or four week courses during the summer.

Courses are devised on a modular basis so that part-time students can choose to study the particular language skills that they require, whereas full-time students (studying 15 hours per week) build up a comprehensive package covering all areas of language development. This flexibility is particularly valuable for students who already have some grasp of the English Language, but need help with specific skills, for example, pronunciation. Students may choose the length of their course from 1 month to 1 Academic Year with shorter summer programmes available in June, July and August. Please note that South Chelsea College does not offer classes below Upper Intermediate level (B1) for any students who require a Tier 4 general student visa.

Guidelines for entry into the UK The UKBA (United Kingdom Border Authority) has introduced a points-based system for entry into the UK. This means that, in addition to a valid passport, students will be expected to show that they have the required number of points to be allocated a visa.

Students will gain points by showing: •

That they have a confirmed place at a recognised educational establishment which has been accredited by a UKBA approved accreditation agency

That they have evidence of sufficient funds to pay their fees and living expenses during the first year of their studies. The UKBA requirement is that students should be able to demonstrate that they have a minimum of £800 per month or £9,600 per year in addition to their College fees. This money is in addition to any income earned by the student during the course of their studies in the UK.

These guidelines are not a comprehensive list of requirements and you must make your own enquiries at the British Embassy.

Accommodation Reasonably priced accommodation is available locally - a definite plus in a city as large as London. Many students initially stay with friends or relatives, and once they have settled they begin to seek a flat or room of their own. The College can recommend an international student services organisation, which can arrange rented accommodation in London. If you require this service then please advise us and we will send you a registration form so that you can apply directly to Britannia Travel Services Ltd. Alternatively you may click on our hotlink to Britannia Travel and contact them through their website. Students wishing to book family or hostel accommodation may do so directly through the student services and accommodation agency. Please telephone or e-mail the College if you would like to discuss your accommodation needs further.
