Efficient use of steam in the steelworks
Connecting duct of roof cover.
At this Chinese steelworks, two energy recovery plants from SMS Siemag will be installed. The plants will use the waste heat arising during the production of high-chromium steels in the AOD converter and from the EAF. From the waste heat, the two steam generators will produce a total of 45 t/h of saturated steam at 25 bar and 224 °C. Saturated steam is frequently used in the steel industry as an efficient energy carrier. Fujian Fuxin Special Steel will use the steam for different purposes, namely for the steam-ejector pump which produces the vacuum in the VD process, for air-conditioning buildings and for feeding the steam network of the works. Commissioning is scheduled for the end of 2012.

steam from the waste heat of two submerged arc furnaces used for the production of FeCr. The plants will generate 5 MW of electrical power from 30 t/h of superheated steam. This environmentally friendly process, which exploits the waste heat from SAF operation, will lead to savings on CO2 emissions amounting to some 30,000 tpy. The supply and service scope comprises planning, installation and commissioning of the steam generator and the dedusting plants. Start-up is expected to take place in 2013. Tailor-made, cost-effective solutions
Use of combustible gases from metallurgical processes In the iron and steel industry, energy costs account for a substantial portion of the production costs. And this portion is likely to grow further in the future. Against this background, energy saving or energy recovery have been playing and will play an increasingly important role, central issues of discussion here being the efficiency of energy use and the resulting savings in CO2 emissions.

From steel processor to full-line producer of flat products The new steel mill complex means a marked increase in production capacity of Maghreb Steel, one of the Those responsible at Maghreb Steel follow the commissioning activities with great attention: Youssef Sekkat, Member of the Management; Othman Benmlih, General Manager; Sofia Aarab, Project Manager (from right).
biggest producers of cold rolled products in North Africa, and is a major enhancement of the company’s value chain.
With these two start-ups, another two key production units of the new steel mill complex went on stream, following the start-up of the Steckel mill (March 2010) and of the 2.8-m heavy-plate mill (October 10, 2011). The Steckel mill and the plate mill were also supplied by SMS Siemag. The members of the international commissioning team of SMS Siemag came from China, India, Spain, the Czech Republic and Germany.
The new steelworks and the slab caster supply the two rolling mills with in-house produced input material. In the past, the existing rolling mills of Maghreb Steel processed slabs and sheets purchased from external sources. The expansion of Maghreb Steel’s production chain is a milestone in the history of the company, which was founded in 1975. Therefore it was decisive for Maghreb Steel to choose the right partner – a partner capable not only of supplying the equipment but also of communicating the required operating and process know-how to the personnel. Sofia Aarab, Project Manager at Maghreb Steel states: “In the past, we have been operating various rolling mills and strip processing lines. With the newly set up production complex, we are now entering steelmaking. We wanted to have the best supplier for this project. Therefore we chose the world market leader SMS Siemag. It was important to us to have a partner capable of offering the full line of plants covering the entire process chain of steelmaking and steel processing. This is not our first project with SMS Siemag. During previous projects, our experience with SMS Siemag has been very good.” The plants operated by Maghreb Steel in the past included two cold rolling mills, each with an annual capacity of 200,000 t, and various pickling, annealing, hot-dip galvanizing, coating and shearing lines.

Sofia Aarab, the responsible project manager.
Customer praises team work with SMS Siemag The start-ups of the new steel plant and the new slab caster at Maghreb Steel could not have been better. Thanks to the vast experience of SMS Siemag and the efficient preparatory activities, start of production was perfectly smooth. Sofia Aarab:
“With SMS Siemag, we have a trusting partner at our side and are very satisfied with our cooperation. e project went smoothly and was characterized by open dealings with each other. During the different project phases, we benefited om the know-how and the experience of the SMS experts. We solved problems jointly and were always able to depend on each other.”
The new, energy-efficient electric steelworks The new electric steel plant uses a 120-t Arccess® electric arc furnace (EAF) equipped with high-efficiency burners and SIS injectors for minimized energy consumption. This effectively cuts production costs. The design of the EAF provides the possibility of using hot metal as input material in the future. SMS Siemag’s contract scope for the steelworks also included a 120-t ladle furnace, the material handling system for alloying agents and a gas cleaning system. In addition to the mechanical and hydraulic equipment, SMS Siemag supplied the complete X-Pact® electrics and automation system, including the drives and the measuring and automation equipment, as well as the technological process models.

TECHNICAL SERVICE | Cost reduction
➤ Product presentation | For metallurgical plants and rolling mills
IMMS® and Condition Monitoring: Tools to reduce life cycle costs Life cycle costs are the cumulative costs a plant or system causes over its entire service life. These costs do not only include the price for acquisition but mainly also the expenses for operation and maintenance. For metallurgical plants and rolling mills, they mostly exceed the original investment costs many times over. Hydraulic adjusting cylinder.
For this reason, many of the SMS customers are striving for a reduction of life cycle costs as an important strategic means to keep up their competitiveness. The present state of the art offers a number of tools to achieve this goal.
Savings through design and maintenance Considerable cost savings can be achieved by appropriate measures in plant design as well as by targeted maintenance work during operation. There is a variety of examples successfully implemented by SMS Siemag for the reduction of life cycle costs through design modifications or new developments.
Flat-neck spindle.

Maintenance Management System, IMMS® In a maintenance management system, data quality is the basis for success. Therefore, highest attention must be paid to obtaining meaningful data for transfer to a maintenance management system. Structured data generation on the basis of the RCM method (Reliability-Centered Maintenance) ensures that this demand is met. SMS Siemag developed a practicable approach by means of MERCM (Maintenance Engineering based on RCM). Rolling mill gear unit.

SERVICE – WORLDWIDE
➤ New service offer | SMS Meer can now offer its customers three service packages to make laser measuring devices on ring rolling machines fit for the future.
The goal is to reduce machine downtimes because a ring rolling machine without a properly functioning laser measuring device is mostly at a complete standstill which will cause high costs.

general overhaul of the press. New screw assembly as “new heart”. Most of the extensive modernization work has been carried out in the SMS Meer manufacturing workshop in Mönchengladbach where the new screw set of the forging machine was also manufactured: the “new heart.” In addition, SMS Meer equipped the press with a completely new hydraulic and electrical control as well as other new mechanical components. Special feature: Wooden oil-motor pinions. A special feature of the hydraulic screw press is the oil-motor pinion made of wood. The pinions are now operated by the hydraulic control which applies a very smooth drive concept. After modernization, the age of the screw press is no longer visible – neither from its appearance nor from its output.

➤ Innovation | With SMS Meer’s new simulation concept for weldedtube plants, calculations become more realistic than with those methods common on the market.
Simulation calculation at SMS Meer which, already today, can be integrated in 3D design work is not only easy and logical in its application but is also completely and freely configurable. In this case, SMS Meer successfully combined three elements: 3D-CAD, FEM and the actual process.
