The 5th Coaltrans China continues its unrivalled track record as the leading conference for the world's largest coal industry The Chinese coal industry is undergoing a period of rapid transformation, with thermal coal exports dropping (to around 52MT for 2006 and possibly an additional 10MT lower for 2007), imports increasing, and a programme of mine closures and restrictions on new developments unless minimum capacity criteria are met, all creating the potential for a supply crunch. Major changes are also being seen in the way in which Chinese generators source their raw materials, with a particular focus on imported coal. Up until October 2006, imports totalled 28.3MT, an increase of 8.72MT over the same period in 2005, and there have been suggestions that imports for the year could exceed 35MT, with particular emphasis on spot trading of Indonesian and Australian thermal coals. Imports of coking coal have, at the same time, been dropping for much of 2006, as China relies increasingly heavily on domestic coal and imports from Mongolia to meet demand. The recent decision to impose an export tax on coking coal has exacerbated this, and is already having an impact on shipments, although even prior to the imposition of the tax, exports had dropped to 52.26MT compared to 60.12MT for the same period the previous year. Coaltrans China 2007 will focus on these major structural changes, featuring: • High profile addresses from the major Chinese coal producers on their strategy and plans for the future • Operational challenges, and the future for international cooperation and investment in the Chinese and North Asian coal industries

• Power producers and suppliers panel – optimising procurement strategies in an increasingly competitive world • Review of key import suppliers to China – Mongolia, Indonesia, Australia and Vietnam • Coke and steel markets - innovation, development and opportunities created by technological advancements
