Pluggedin.tv Sky+ Hard Disc Upgrade Guide

Version 1.5

Introduction Thank you for purchasing the Sky+ Hard Drive Upgrade Toolkit from www.pluggedin.tv This upgrade transforms the usability of Sky+, giving you the capacity to store anything from 60 hours to 125 hours of programmes depending on the upgrade model chosen.

Benefits This increased capacity has the following benefits  Programmes such as movies and sporting events, which would occupy 10-20 percent of the standard Sky+ capacity now occupy just 3 or 4 percent  You can make more use of the advanced features such as dual record and series link  Instead of having to delete programmes before you have even had a chance to watch them to make room for new recordings, you have much more time to watch programmes at your convenience  Easy to install – typically it takes just 30 minutes to complete the installation. In summary, the process is simply swapping the old drive for a new drive – much the same as swapping a hard drive in a Personal Computer.  Reduced noise – some of the older Sky+ units have quite noisy drives installed as standard, whereas modern hard drive units tend to be quieter by design.

Warnings Warranty Your warranty will of course be voided by any upgrade that you perform.

Damage and/or Personal Injury 

 

These instructions are for guidance only. While the fitting of the disc is as simple as changing a disc on a personal computer, there are of course risks and standard safety precautions that you MUST follow Disconnect the Sky box from the mains – the best way to ensure that you have done this is to remove the mains cable from the back of the Sky box itself Disconnect all other cables from the Sky box Ensure that you take precautions to prevent static electricity damage to the unit (please use the special wrist strap provided)

Pluggedin.tv Europe Limited are not responsible for any loss, damage or injury caused by the fitting of this upgrade – you proceed entirely at your own risk © Pluggedin.tv Europe Limited 2005-2006 All rights reserved Page 2 of 14

Getting Started (All Models) Preparation 1. PLEASE READ ALL OF THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE YOU START! This will ensure that you have a quick and trouble free upgrade 2. Before you start please ensure that the Instant Rewind feature is switched OFF. To do this choose SERVICES ► SKY+ Setup and set "Instant Rewind" to "Off" and "Save New Settings". 3. Series Link information will be lost, so if required make a note of these so that they can be re-entered after the upgrade is completed. Of course all recordings will also be lost as these are on the existing disc – if these are important to you then you can follow the instructions to copy them to VCR , DVD recorder or Personal Computer (requires a SweetSpot Video Processor for this option – see www.pluggedin.tv/sweetspot for more information) 4. Put the unit in to standby (the power LED should show Red instead of green). 5. We advise that you work on a suitable clear surface, e.g. desk or table that is well lit so that you can see clearly what you are doing. - It is not advisable to perform the upgrade with the unit on the floor!. Take care to protect the work surface from scratches as the edges of the Sky case are quite sharp.

Disconnecting 6. Disconnect ALL cables from the Sky box, including the mains lead, making a note of which cable was connected to which socket so that you are able to return them to exactly where they were connected previously. Pay particular attention to the SCART connectors, if you 2 have SCART leads connected then clearly it is easy to get them swapped round accidentally and it is important that they are plugged back in to the correct sockets.

Static Control 7. Please attach the supplied wrist strap as per the instructions provided. The metal clip should be connected to an earthed object. The best and safest item to connect to is piping

Configuring the new drive Depending on the capacity that you have selected will determine how the drive needs to be configured. The drive configuration is controlled by a set of ‘jumpers’ – these are small electrical connectors that fit over sets of small pins at the back of the drive and control the behaviour of the hard drive. © Pluggedin.tv Europe Limited 2005-2006 All rights reserved Page 4 of 14

YOU MUST SET THE JUMPERS TO CONFIGURE THE DRIVE TO ‘CABLE SELECT’, ALSO KNOWN AS ‘CS’

The example above shows the configuration for the Samsung 250GB Spinpoint SP2514N drive as supplied with the 125 hour upgrade kit. NOTE: 1. This diagram is with the drive upside down, in other words with the silver top plate of the drive downwards, and the electronics side (the underside) upwards. 2. You may also find that contrary to the note above, the jumper may already be in the correct position as shipped from the factory – in which case you don’t need to make any changes. 3. The various letters shown above (for example ‘EF’) are not physically marked on the hard drive, they are just shown here in the instructions to represent a position to fit the jumper connection.

Fitting – Pace 3000 Introduction The Pace3000, also known as the ‘Mark 1’ is the original Sky+ launched. It has a silver fascia, with a black coloured central section and is approximately 19” wide.

Removing the cover 1. With the rear of the unit facing you, remove the 3 screws shown below that hold the top part of the case in place. You MUST use the special security screwdriver provided as part of this kit, as the screws fitted are tamper proof and cannot be removed any other way. 2. Slide the top cover towards you, it should then lift off. 3. The original hard drive is located as shown on the diagram. There is a metal cover that holds it in to position, and 2 cable connectors. The flat grey connector with the red stripe down one edge is the data cable, through which the recordings travel between the disc and the Sky box. The smaller connector made up of 4 wires and a white plug is the power cable, which is used to power the hard drive.

Removing the original hard drive 4. The data cable is kept tidy by a small set of ‘lugs’ that form part of the metal hard drive lid. Gently free the data cable from these lugs, you may need to bend the cable slightly to do this. 5. Unplug the data cable from the drive. This is the trickiest part of the process as the data cable connector to the drive is usually a tight fit, and the actual plug is the thin black strip that is too small to hold on to. Instead, it needs a certain technique to remove it. the best way is to hold one edge of the cable as near as you can to the hard drive, between thumb and forefinger. Pull gently away from the drive, and you should feel the cable move slightly on the side you are pulling. Repeat that on the other side of the cable, so that you are gently ‘rocking’ the connector out at each edge, until it will finally release from the drive. 6. The same process can then applied to the power connector. These can be an even tighter fit, but at least it is possible to grip the actual plug itself rather than having to pull by the cable. 7. When both connections are free you can now remove the hard disc cover by removing the 4 security screws. The original hard drive can now be removed and placed carefully to one side 8. The new drive can now be removed from its packaging and must be configured correctly before being installed – this is very important

Installing the new drive 9. After the drive has been configured then it can be installed in to your Sky+ unit. Connect the data cable first, making sure that you have fitted it the same way as it was connected on the old drive. This is normally very obvious by the way the cable is folded, it naturally wants to connect the same way, however if you are not sure then the cable should be fitted so that the red edge of the data connector is closest to the power cable connector. You need to line up plug and gently rock it back in to position, when it is correctly connected it should push almost all the way back in to the drive so that the plug is only just visible. Make sure that it is in straight, not at an angle as this means that it has not fully seated correctly. 10. The power cable can now be fitted. Push this firmly home again so that it feels secure in to the drive. 11. Slide the drive in to the position. You might notice that the drive is slightly taller than the original unit, this is not a problem. 12. refit the metal drive cover by sitting it on top of the drive and gently replacing and tightening the 4 screws using the security screwdriver. Take care not to over tighten, you do not want to overly compress the drive with the metal cover – so you do not need to tighten them all the way. 13. finally – check that the cables are still secure in place in to the drive and tuck the data cable back in to the metal lugs on top of the drive cover

Replacing the cover 14. Slide the cover from the rear back in to place. Note that the front edge of the cover has a recessed edge that slides inside the front panel of the unit – so take care to line this up before pushing the cover fully home 15. Replace and tighten the 3 screws on the rear of the unit – the cover is now secure and you are ready to reconnect.

Reconnection of Cables 16. Connect all the cables to their original positions – connect the mains cable last because as soon as you plug this in the unit will start, and it is best practice with all equipment that contains hard drives to avoid moving them while the hard drive is running.

Fitting – Pace 3100 Introduction The Pace3100, also known as the ‘Mark 2’ was launched as a replacement to the Pace3000 unit. Physically the 3100 us more compact, it as a white facia and lid..

Removing the cover 1. With the rear of the unit facing you, remove the 3 screws that hold the top part of the case in place on the left, top centre and right. You MUST use the special security screwdriver provided as part of this kit, as the screws fitted are tamper proof and cannot be removed any other way. 2. Slide the top cover towards you, it should then lift off. 3. The original hard drive is located in the centre with 2 cable connectors attached. The flat grey connector with the red stripe down one edge is the data cable, through which the recordings travel between the disc and the Sky box. The smaller connector made up of 4 wires and a white plug is the power cable, which is used to power the hard drive. It is attached by special angle-brackets, which screw on to each side of the hard drive and then screw in to the Sky+ unit itself via 4 antivibration (rubber mounted) screws.

Removing the original hard drive 4. Unscrew the anti-vibration screws using the security screwdriver. The hard drive (with the angle brackets still attached to each side) can now be lifted slightly from the Sky+ box. The same process can then applied to the power connector. These can be an even tighter fit, but at least it is possible to grip the actual plug itself rather than having to pull by the cable. 7. When both connections are free you can now remove the drive assembly completely from the Sky+ box, and the angle-brackets can be unscrewed from the side of the hard drive using a cross-headed screwdriver. Note – the screws holding the angle-bracket are often © Pluggedin.tv Europe Limited 2005-2006 All rights reserved Page 8 of 14

very tight, therefore to prevent damage to the screws you must ensure that you are using the correct cross-headed screwdriver. 8. The original hard drive can now be placed carefully to one side 9. The new drive can now be removed from its packaging and must be configured correctly before being installed – this is very important

Installing the new drive 10. After the drive has been configured then it can be installed in to your Sky+ unit. The first thing to do is to re-fit the angle brackets to the side of the drive, in the same way as they were on the original drive. Also ensure that the rubber feet are still fitted to the angle brackets, and then position the drive back in the Sky+ case 11. Push this firmly home again so that it feels secure in to the drive. 13. Slide the drive in to the position. You might notice that the drive is slightly taller than the original unit, this is not a problem. 14. finally – check that the cables are still secure in place in to the drive and tuck the data cable back in to the metal lugs on top of the drive cover

Replacing the cover 15. Slide the cover from the rear back in to place. Note that the front edge of the cover has a recessed edge that slides inside the front panel of the unit – so take care to line this up before pushing the cover fully home 16. Replace and tighten the 3 screws on the rear of the unit – the cover is now secure and you are ready to reconnect.

Reconnection of Cables 17. Connect all the cables to their original positions – connect the mains cable last because as soon as you plug this in the unit will start, and it is best practice with all equipment that contains hard drives to avoid moving them while the hard drive is running.

Final Steps(All Models) Switching on After the mains cable has been reconnected the box should initialise, you might notice some flashing from the indicators on the front of the unit. It can take a minute or even longer for the box to respond to the remote control and come out of standby – this is normal behaviour. When the unit switches on you should see the normal planner menu, and the message “Searching for Listings”. The upgrade is nearly complete – the final stage is to prepare the new drive for use.

Preparing the new Hard Disc This option is selected as follows using the hidden INSTALLER SETUP screen. This is accessed using a special sequence of key presses on the Sky remote control.

This Housekeeping screen will be presented for a few minutes, after which the unit will switch to standby. Note that the amount of time taken for the housekeeping process can vary dramatically. Typically it is less than 5 minutes but can in some circumstances take nearly 1 hour to complete. After the unit has gone in to standby, then leave it for another 1 – 2 minutes, and it should be possible to switch on the unit using the remote and resume normal viewing and recording operations.

Success!! You should now have a fully upgraded Sky+ which a much larger storage capacity. If you require the Instant Rewind option then enable it by choosing SERVICES ► SKY+ Setup and set "Instant Rewind" to "ON" and "Save New Settings". Troubleshooting If you have carefully followed the instructions then things should go smoothly. However it is possible that sometimes things can go wrong. If you encounter problems, then the most like causes are 1. Loose / incorrectly fitted cables – if you are in any doubt then unplug and refit them. 2. Incorrect jumper settings on the new drive – check that you have followed the instructions EXACTLY as it is critical that they are correctly and securely positioned. If after checking this, you still have problems then we would advise that you reconnect your original drive , but DON’T perform the Drive Preparation steps as this will delete any old recordings etc from it. © Pluggedin.tv Europe Limited 2005-2006 All rights reserved Page 13 of 14

If this works successfully, then either your new hard drive is defective (rare with modern hard drives) or there was a problem in the fitting process. Check the jumper settings again on your new drive – and refit it in to the Sky box. If there are still problems then please contact us quoting your order reference / invoice number via email below [email protected]
