Greetings OLLI Members & Friends, Besides planning for another exceptional lineup of classes this spring, you may want to save the date of March 27, when we will be hosting an OLLI Spring Celebration. It is being held at Washington Crossing, a new OLLI Partner in Learning, and I urge you to bring a friend who might be interested in joining OLLI. We’ll be foregoing any PowerPoint presentations in order to focus on just having fun and mingling. Be ready for a 3:15pm performance from Phyllis Schrag that is sure to amuse you. See the last page of this brochure for more details. You will see a lot of familiar instructors this spring and some new ones. Our growing pool of presenters has been a valuable asset, and we appreciate the feedback you have given us about them in your evaluations. This feedback helps us plan and refine future offerings, and it is vital to our continued ability to offer outstanding classes. You may recall we offered another Crane Trip to Nebraska this month. Ed Harvey, the coordinator, has agreed to give us a presentation this spring about the trip, complete with fantastic photos of these magnificent creatures. Anyone interested in the natural world will want to sign up for this class. And check out our upcoming day trips to the Prehistoric Indian Village in Mitchell and to Omaha for Warren Buffett’s annual meeting. Find out a little more about your ancestry with our new offering, Discover Your Deep Ancestry Through DNA Testing. We have over 100 classes on tap in April and May, so give yourself time to read the brochure fully. If you see a class you just have to take, register early. Nothing makes us feel worse than having to tell someone a class he or she wishes to attend is already full. (Don’t forget, though, that there are usually cancellations the week leading up to the first day of any given class, so monitor the website or give us a call. We will do all we can to get you in.) Your OLLI Director,

Nancy Wehrkamp 3

Many of us occasionally find ourselves looking back on earlier choices made and actions taken and say “What was I thinking?” Human nature is curious and creative—and many times we do things for reasons not altogether clear even to us. New discoveries in human development have identified life as multiple 7-year cycles, each with its own specific focus. When we review those unsettling life events within the specific developmental cycle, things are more clearly understood. Exploring these universal cycles also helps us recognize the forces and instincts that influence our children and grandchildren. We then have a blueprint for ways to support and enhance their further growth, as well as our own. Introduction to Kayaking 1 session w/Jay Heath & Derek Klawitter Tuesday

According to Sherry Turkle, “Technology has become the architect of our intimacies.” Online, we fall prey to the illusion of companionship, gathering thousands of Twitter and Facebook friends and confusing tweets and posts with authentic communication. Turkle argues this relentless connection leads to a new solitude. As technology ramps up, emotional lives ramp down. Alone Together results from a 15year exploration of our lives on the digital terrain. Based on hundreds of interviews, it describes new unsettling relationships among friends, lovers, parents, and children, and new instabilities in how we understand privacy, community, intimacy, and solitude. We will combine reading and discussion to explore many of the provocative ideas in the book. Read before class: Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other.

Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, known more popularly in the Englishspeaking world as Rumi, was a 13th-century Persian poet, jurist, theologian, and Sufi mystic. Asian Muslims have long recognized his spiritual legacy, and his importance is considered to transcend 27

ethnic borders. In 2007 he was described as the “most popular poet in America,” as he continues to have an impact on modern-day Muslims and Christians alike. Karen shares her enthusiasm for his writings through poetry, music, and slides from her visit to his tomb in Turkey.
