On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Faculty, Staff, and Students we thank you for your support of the Iowa Central Athletic Department. We are pleased that you are interested in our students and in Iowa Central Community College. Iowa Central Community College has a proud tradition of strong athletics on the field but also in the classroom. Studentathletes are an important part of our mission. In addition to the many hours of hard work our student-athletes put into practices and games, they also dedicate their energies to classes and studies. We are especially proud of the large number of our athletes who achieve Academic All-American status each year. None of this would be possible without a dedicated coaching staff that requires discipline in their team’s academic and personal lives. Our coaching staff is the best in the nation! Iowa Central Community College has one of the most extensive NJCAA intercollegiate athletic programs in the United States. We have 10 women’s and 11 men’s teams. Iowa Central is indeed proud of its winning athletic legacy. During the 2012-13 season, we had 93 All-Americans, 12 Academic All-Americans, and for the fifth straight season captured the NATYCAA Cup. The NATYCAA Cup is presented to the top NJCAA intercollegiate athletic program in the nation each year. Iowa Central’s quest to be the top athletic program was boosted by four National Championships this past year in women’s outdoor track and field, women’s cross country, and both men’s and women’s half marathon. Other sports that added to this year’s success on the men’s side included swimming (seventh), indoor track and field (second), bowling (third), outdoor track and field (second), werestling (fifth) and rodeo (eighteenth). On the women’s side, volleyball (thirteenth), basketball (sixteenth), swimming (seventh), and bowling (second) each participated at their respective national tournaments. Our appreciation is extended to the many Iowa Central friends who support our scholarship program. We invite anyone who enjoys sporting activities to join our Triton Booster Club or give a gift to our foundation. Your support of the scholarship program is a critical element in supporting the efforts of our young student athletes. GO TRITONS! Sincerely,

Dr. Dan Kinney Pesident, Iowa Central Community College

2013 SEASON FORECAST The Triton football program is anxious to erase a sub-par 2012 campaign. A year ago we finished 6-5 and lost in the Salt City Bowl to Hutchinson (KS) 41-21. It ended our six game bowl win streak which was the longest in the country!!! Let’s embark on a new bowl win streak in 2013. We are anxious to put that bitter taste of a tough year behind us and move on to a more productive 2013 season. It will all start with work ethic and consistency in practice. “You get what you deserve”. I sincerely believe that. We deserved to be 6-5 last year based on our inability to string together consecutive practices that were filled with effort, attention to detail, enthusiasm and focus. I am confident that 2013 will be better. Our pre-season has gone well, the attitude is tremendous, and our guys are preparing for a banner 2013 year!!! Offensively we return many guys that have started for us or were in the two-deep varsity roster if they didn’t start. Our experience will assist us in our quest to improve our offensive production. We have both the offensive line and the skill kids to be difficult to defend in 2013. We have switched from our traditional “I” formation attack to a “pistol/shot gun” attack in an attempt to put more of a horizontal and vertical stretch on the defense. We are also employing more spread formations to prevent teams from “loading the box” on us. Involving more option football will assist us in making the defense play a disciplined brand of football which is difficult to do over a three hour game. I am confident that our offense will be difficult to defend this season!!! Defensively we lost most of our two-deep roster to graduation. We will be a little green on that side of the ball. It appears that our team defensive speed has greatly improved in the secondary which will assist us greatly with the offenses that we see each and every week. We have abandoned the cover 2 concepts as our base way to play defense and are going back to our quarters concepts and three deep concepts that served us well over many of the past seasons. We must shore up our pass defense if we are to improve on this side of the ball from a year ago. Our zone and man coverage must improve, our pass rush must improve, and our underneath collisions, reroutes, and reactions to route combinations must improve. I am certain it will. I am confident that we will get back to playing great Triton defense in 2013!!! Our kicking game will be outstanding. Punter Mitch Bonnstetter lead the nation in punting a year ago and returns to us. Place kicker Nate Criswell was red-shirted a year ago but will be one of the top kickers in the country at “any” level. Our long snappers have looked good in pre-season as well. Our assistant coaching staff is second to none. These men are great football minds, tireless recruiters, but more importantly work well with young men and have an uncanny ability to teach the game well to our players. Our goal is to improve from day to day during this four month journey. We will strive to make noticeable progress from week to week. I think that this squad will take on that Iowa Central “blue collar” approach and grind out productive practices which will allow us to make constant improvement throughout the regular season. We are confident that we will be “in the hunt” when it comes time to determine Conference Championships and Bowl Invitations. Go Tritons!

Kevin Twait, Head Football Coach

CLASS CHARACTER COMMITMENT LIVE YOUR LIFE WITH THE THREE C’S

- Class -

A guy who has class is going to do the right things and we will trust them because of that.

- Character -

That innate quality that keeps someone hanging tough when things are bad. Guys with character don’t let the environment control them; they control the environment

- Commitment -

You are in it come hell or high water (no matter how good or how bad) and you are in it for the duration.

2012 SEASON REVIEW

2012 TRITON RECOGNITION

“Not up to par”. The 2012 football season at Iowa Central was one that could be summed up in those four words. Although we still managed to make a bowl game (and play very well in the game for three quarters) the 2012 Triton football season was one of disappointment. We didn’t recruit well enough, coach well enough, or perform well enough on Saturday’s to have the type of season that we typically have around here. Normally our squads here take a “blue collar” approach to each practice and grind out productive practices during both pre-season and the regular season. We generally make gradual progress and improvement from August through November. The 2012 football squad was not mentally tough enough to do so. Our consistency in practice was not there. We were like a roller coaster during the week leading up to our weekend contests. One day we were ready to practice and the next day we weren’t willing to make the commitment on the practice field that it takes to be good on Saturdays. We were deserving of our 6-5 record as our work ethic and mental approach to practice did not enable us to take the weekly “baby steps” forward that normally we do in Tritonville. On a positive note, we prepared very well in our four week period prior to our Salt City Bowl contest vs. Hutchinson. They were loaded with talent and we were tied with them 21-21 at the end of three quarters. They took over and handed it to us pretty hard in quarter number four but we fought a super fight for most of the game. It was great to keep our bowl streak alive (10 of the past 11 seasons) and (14 of the past 16 seasons) – but our streak of six consecutive bowl victories was broken. TIME TO START A NEW STREAK IN 2013!!!

DODGER STADIUM

Dodger Stadium is the home of Iowa Central Community College Football. It is one of the finest athletic complexes in the entire state with new field turf added in Fall 2008 (new jumbo scoreboard/video board added in 2010). A big thank-you to Matt Miller and his football staff, the Fort Dodge Community School District, and Terry Dessinger and his staff for their help and cooperation. 10

TRITON FOOTBALL RECRUITING PHILOSOPHY Any great organization, business, company, or team has some basic common characteristics. The most vital of these essential characteristics is the type of people that comprise that organization. People who are dedicated, loyal, willing to sacrifice, intrinsically motivated and can be trusted to do their very best every day. It is this type of student-athlete that we seek when recruiting them to play football at Iowa Central. We look for three things in a young man during the recruiting process. We want good kids - who are going to study - who love to play football. If a person possesses these characteristics and has some football playing ability - he will have a chance to play at Iowa Central. If a person has an abundance of natural athletic ability but does not meet the three qualities mentioned above - we will shy away from him in the recruitment process. In detail, here is what we need! 1. Good Kids. We want kids that we can trust. We want kids that know the difference from right and wrong. We want kids who are mature enough to think before they act. We need student-athletes who are going to make good decisions: uptown, in the computer lab, on the practice field, in the library, in the weight room, in the residence halls, in the cafeteria, on the game field, in the science lab. We want a football family that enjoys spending time together: socially, academically, and in the off-season weight training/agility programs. It all starts with recruiting good people. 2. Going to Study. We need student-athletes that are willing to make an academic commitment. An academic commitment to us means looking at college like a 35 hour work week. You spend roughly 15 hours per week in the actual classroom with your instructor - you had better be disciplined enough to study 20 hours per week outside of the classroom. I am not so concerned with how well or how poorly you did academically in high school. I am concerned with how maturely you look at your collegiate academic career - and if you are focused enough to make the necessary sacrifices to be successful in the classroom. It’s all about time management. You’ve got to make good decisions when your parent/guardians’ aren’t around to help you through them. Develop a proper balance between - academic life, athletic life, social life, and spiritual life.

3. Love to Play the Game. I am not interested in kids that kind of like to play football. High schools are full of those kids. They love Friday nights but aren’t to excited about Monday-Thursday preparation. We need kids that have a passion for the game. Kids that want to practice, that want to lift weights in the off-season, that want to work on agility drills in the off-season. We get only 11 playing opportunities in a 365 day year. One had better be very focused in his off-season pursuit of improvement, as “gameday” doesn’t come around very often. If you love to play, you are able to view in-season practices and off-season training as intensive prepatory tools, not just some necessary evil to kill time.

KEYS TO ACADEMIC SUCCESS AT IOWA CENTRAL Academic Resource Center Open 90 hours per week for student use. Five tutors are available at all times. Student-athletes are required to spend a minimum of four hours per week studying in this supervised environment. Most of our players spend 8-10 hours per week in this excellent academic environment. Attendance Policy Faculty mandated to take/report daily classroom attendance. Coach Twait gets a daily attendance report. We are able to intervene before something gets out of hand. The leading cause for collegiate academic failure is that kids do not attend class. Time Management Form Begins at 7:00 a.m. and ends at midnight. Student-athlete writes in all classes, practices, weight training sessions, and meal times. They then take a hi-liter and hi-lite all of the open time. They then go about structuring/organizing/managing their free time. We attempt to have each young man understand the importance of “having a plan for the day”. Grade Checks Students personally give to instructors three times per semester. These help to open the lines of communication between: instructor/student, instructor/coach, student/coach. They also keep everyone abreast of “where they are at” academically.

PROOF IN THE PUDDING • 2012-2013 Academic Success • Team GPA of 2.55 (4.0 scale) • Four 4.0 Student-athletes • 66 Academic All-Region players • 22 of last year’s sophomores will continue their education and play football at a 4-year institution

OFF-SEASON PREPARATION The off-season football program at Iowa Central is very structured. Student-athletes participate in a 5 month winter/spring program on campus and a 3 1/2 month summer program at their summer dwellings.
