Silly Christmas Survey

place their blank Answer Cards on the table. The teacher (or another student) reads the first Question Card. Students in each group collectively think of an answer (one they agree on) and they write that answer on the first Answer Card. (The group writes only one answer, not everyone in the group.) Then, the second Question Card is read and students write an answer on the second Answer Card. Continue until all twelve (or more) questions have been asked and answered.

Language Target: Conditionals (Type 2 – If…, would), listening, answering questions and having a lot of fun. Setting Up: Copy and cut both of the Question and Answer worksheets into cards. Prepare enough Answer cards for at least 12 cards per group. Note 1: There are 20 Question Cards (plus four blank ones to write your own questions). Depending on the size of the class, it’s recommended to use only a dozen of the questions. Otherwise, it may take too long, and some of the fun might fizzle. Note 2: Since the students don’t see the actual questions, the difficulty or complexity of the questions can easily be adjusted. When reading the questions, simply substitute more appropriate words into the questions. Getting Started: In groups (3~6), students For more FUN English Lesson Worksheets Visit: http://www.efl4u.com

Now, students shuffle their Answer Cards. The teacher also shuffles the question cards. Once again, the Question Cards are read, but this time, the original answer will have been replaced with a random answer from the shuffled Answer Cards. After each Question Card is read, groups read their Answer Card aloud. Since the answers have been rearranged, some pretty silly responses to the questions will occur. The class could vote for the silliest answer (or even the best answer). Variation 1: For higher ability students, encourage them to answer the questions with complete sentences using I f … , would…. For example: Q: There are many presents under the Christmas tree, but none are for you. What would you do? A : If there were many presents under the Christmas tree, but none of them were for me, I would…. Variation 2: Do this lesson in pairs (or small groups). Give one student a set of Question Cards and the other(s) the Answer Cards. They follow the directions in Getting Started (above). Variation 3: To practice working with negative sentences, change the question from What would you do? To W h a t wouldn’t you do? Variation 4: Of course, this lesson is easily adaptable to practice other verb tenses. Simply change the questions (and the Answer Cards) to another tense. For example: What did (didn’t) you do? What will (won’t) you do? What could you have done? What would have happened if…?

Variation 5: For higher ability students, encourage them to practice reported speech. After one group reads its answer Card, the other groups ask themselves, What did he/she say? Someone (or everyone) in the group replies, for example, He said, if he were asleep when Santa whispered in his ear, “You’ve been a bad boy this year, haven’t you?” he would say: “You must believe me, I’ve been a really good boy this year!” Similar Lesson: Silly Valentine’s Survey (Holiday Collection Set – Valentine Lesson 03a)
