Advent/Christmas 2016

Volume 17 Issue 3

Message from Father Loomis A big MERRY CHRISTMAS to everyone from the Deaf Apostolate! The entire Advent and Christmas seasons undoubtedly remain my favorite time of the year. Beyond the glowing lights, delicious smells, expressed kindnesses, and warm fireplaces, I enjoy the various Advent and Christmas characters. The story of Christ’s birth involves so many players, from the Angel Gabriel, Joseph, and Mary, to Herod, the shepherds, and even the visiting Magi. Each character reveals a little something about humanity’s need for Jesus and how Jesus is the answer to every human need. Perhaps the most curious characters in the Christmas story are the Magi. These men travel thousands of miles across difficult terrain with nothing more than a star and raw intuition to guide them. They are not Jews, they do not await a Messiah, and yet, deep down, on a basic human level, they long for Christ. They seek him in mind and heart, making great sacrifices to find this newborn King. When they arrive in Jerusalem, they ask others to show them the way, to explain the Scriptures and help them find the one for whom their hearts pine. Their witness challenges us to re-center our desires. More than wrapped presents, sweetened pastries, and twinkling trees…do we want Christ? Do we look for Him always, whether at mass, in the Scriptures, or throughout our day, using every means possible to find Him? When necessary, do we make great sacrifices to find Him? This holy season, I pray that above all else, we desire Christ alone, and through the guiding light of the Holy Spirit, we find the one for whom we long: the precious and joyful infant Christ. Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. Sean Loomis. [email protected]

Message from Sister Kathleen Dear Friends, So here we are just a short time before Christmas! This season is my favorite season in the Church year—the time called Advent! It is a time of waiting and a time of expectant hope and unlike our civil calendar these four weeks of Advent are not the ending of the year but the beginning of the cycle of the church year. The word Advent itself literally means “to come.” Sometimes the ASL sign used for Advent time is ‘coming time’ other times the ASL sign used is ‘waiting time’ indicating that we are waiting for the coming of God in our midst. We are waiting for the coming of God in the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, the long promised and expected messiah who came in history. We are waiting for God’s coming in our midst each day through grace received in the Sacraments, God’s word in scripture and received through our loving interaction with each other. And we are waiting for the promised coming of Our Lord and savior in his glory at the end of time. Waiting for sure is part of Advent and the deep anticipated hope that God comes to us right in our midst, precisely into our humanness. Just as a young child waits with expectant hope for the gifts of Christmas morning, we await the eternal Christmas. Our bible readings leading up to Christmas are often taken from the prophet Isaiah. During the time of Isaiah, the people of Judah lived in fear and uncertainty about their government that threatened the promise that the son of David would reign on Judah’s throne forever. Isiah talks of a new shoot, flowering from the “Stump of Jesse”. Jesse is David’s father. From this seemingly dead tree will come a new branch- a new king who will govern rightly like a son of God. The spirit will rest upon him and give him the gifts of the Holy Spirit- he will lead with wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge and above all “fear of the Lord”(Isaiah 11:3). The biblical meaning of ‘fear of the Lord’ is living in reverence and obedience to God’s plan. Isaiah goes on to prophesy the peaceable kingdom that we sometimes see depicted on Christmas cards: a wolf with a lamb, the calf with the lion – natural enemies living in harmony. This is a beautiful the image of God’s kingdom. For Christians, this kingdom comes to fulfillment in the birth of Jesus, the Messiah and yet we await its full revelation. So what does all this mean for us in our daily lives as we prepare for Christmas day! Sometimes it may seem our lives are as challenging as the Jewish people at the time of Isaiah— nothing seems to work out. Suffering surrounds us, there is much that we must endure. All may seem dark- not all though

DEAF CATHOLIC because in the core of our being we like Mary have been given a promise – “Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you”. Through Jesus birth, death and resurrection- we and our world are filled with grace- God is with us! As we light the Christmas candles or gaze upon the twinkling Christmas ornaments on our trees, let us be mindful of their purpose to remind us in a sometimes dark world that the God of Glory has come into our world and desires to be one with us. May we be open to this Christmas grace and mindful of the true gift of Christmas, God’s saving love in His Son, Jesus. I am sure that throughout the Christmas season you will gather with family and loved ones. May I offer these special blessings to make holy your celebrations together. May these prayers and blessings help to gather you as a family and unite you in and through God’s love, the true gift of this Christmas Season! Merry Christmas and many blessings in the New Year! Lovingly,

Sister Kathleen Schipani [email protected]

Blessing of the Christmas Tree Leader: Lord our God, we praise you for the light of creation: the sun, the moon and the stars of the night. We praise you for the light of Israel: the Law, and the prophets and the wisdom of the Scriptures. We praise you for Jesus Christ, your Son: he is Emmanuel, God-with-us, the Prince of Peace, who fills us with the wonder of your love. Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we light this tree. May the light and cheer it gives be a sign of the joy that fills our hearts. May all who delight in this tree come to the knowledge and joy of salvation. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Message from Father Russo Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Do you like the snow? When you look out the window you see the snow falling and it really looks beautiful. You go to bed, wake up the next morning, look out the window and everything is white: the grass is white, the trees are white, the road is white, and nothing is moving….no traffic. The snow forces people to stop; stop hurrying, stop working, stop frenzied shopping. As the snow is falling, God is speaking to you. God says (through the Psalmist): “Be still and know that I am God.” During Advent and the Christmas season Our Lord Jesus wants us to see how close He is to us. The great St. Teresa of Avila used to say that if you are looking for God it is not necessary to grow wings and fly around the sky looking for Him….the best place to find Him is within yourself. This is a profound statement. Here is the scripture passage in St. John’s gospel that helps us to appreciate how close and intimate God is to us. “Jesus answered him, “Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” John 14:23 The peace and quiet of Advent and during the Christmas season is the right time for us to reflect on the greatness of this statement. God wants to be intimate with us! Let us think of Mary, Jesus’ mother and our mother as she kept silent and treasured all these things in her heart.

All: Amen. [Light the tree.]

Best wishes for a holy Advent and Christmas,t,

Blessing Of The Nativity Scene

Fr. Antony Russo C.Ss.R.

Leader: God of every nation and people, from the very beginning of creation you have made known your love: when our need for a Savior was great you sent your Son to be born of the Virgin Mary. To our lives he brings joy and peace, justice, mercy and love. Lord, bless all who look upon this manger; may it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus, and raise up our thoughts to him, who is God-with-us and Savior of all, and who lives and reigns for ever and ever. All: Amen. Prayer Before Christmas Dinner Leader: Lord Jesus, in the peace of this season our spirits are joyful: With the beasts and angels, the shepherds and stars, with Mary and Joseph we sing God’s praise. By your coming may the hungry be filled with good things, and may our table and home be blessed. Together: Bless us O Lord, and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty through Christ our Lord. Amen.

A new video is posted every other Friday. The first series consist of brief teaching videos on the meaning of the Creed. The Creed for us Catholics summarizes what we believe in one prayer. These videos are in ASL and they are voiced and captioned. The most recent video is on the home page: www.DeafCatholicPhilly. org . Past videos can be found at: https://vimeo. com/catholicphilly. Enjoy watching these teaching videos. If you have a topic you would like covered in an upcoming vlog, please let us know. Catholic Women’s Conference Deaf Track: This past October 29, 2016, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia hosted a Catholic Women’s Conference at The National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown. Over 1200 women attended this packed full day of spirituality and community. Among the 1200 was a group of 26 deaf women who participated in the Deaf Track of the Conference. For this track the keynote presenter was Jeannine Adkins who many know from her popular vlog, TheDeafCatholicMom on YouTube. As the participants learned Jeannine who is deaf and the mother of seven children, is passionate about her Catholic faith. Her beautiful presentations about the life of Mary, the Mother of Mercy, connected her experiences as a woman and mother to the life experience of Mary. Jeannine’s stories of struggle and faith touched all our hearts. She is the kind of presenter whose ASL stories can make you laugh and cry. She left us all feeling inspired and blessed. Here are some of the participant’s comments about the Conference: The Catholic Women’s Conference was a very joyful experience for me. From the opening mass with Archbishop Charles J. Chaput followed by Jeannine’s presentation, I was inspired by them.  The Divine Mercy Prayer service led by Bishop John McIntyre was the last gathering before everyone went home. The prayer service was very moving. The entire event was just wonderful. The National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa is a beautiful and peaceful place. A most perfect place to have a retreat! Patricia McFadden We girls had good experience at the Women’s Conference.at Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown, PA. last October 29th. We were pleased to meet the ASL Keynote presenter,

DEAF CATHOLIC Jeannine Adkins from Kansas . Her speech inspired me the most about her family life with her 7 children. I often watch her on Youtube. Thank you Jeannine for coming here to PA. Irene Kane We really enjoyed the entire day.  Jeannine was a wonderful speaker. Her life experiences being shared was very inspirational. The closing was also beautiful.  Thanks so much for inviting us. Denise and Maria McGlinn The ASL participants also attended the workshop by Sister of Life, Sister Mary Elizabeth who spoke about Living Mercy: A Fruit of Union with Jesus. Jennifer Durkin and Nancy Sullivan were the ASL interpreters for this session and the voice interpreters for the Keynote presenter. All agreed they did a great job. The opening Mass with Archbishop Chaput and the closing prayer were very inspirational. Jeannine Adkins, the Deaf Keynote Speaker lead part of the closing prayer service, the Divine Mercy Chaplet. For all in attendance this was a perfect way to end the day in prayer together before Jesus, in the Blessed Sacrament. Hopefully in two years we will participate in another Women’s Conference with an ASL track. Any ideas or feedback is welcome as we plan for the next Catholic Women’s Conference. De Sales Society DeSales News: Not much has happened on our end. We had our monthly Masses and Socials at St Stanislaus. On October 30th 2016, we attended another mass held at St. Teresa of Caluctta, Schwenksville, PA., where sacred artifacts from St Boniface are now in use at their new church. The old church St Boniface in Northern Liberties used to be a social hub where masses were said and socials held for deaf people. As the years went ahead, crime increased in the neighborhood during the late 80’s and 90’sand the Masses/Socials were shifted to a safer church with parking in NE Philadelphia. The Archdiocese sold St Boniface and a developer demolished it for luxury condos costing about 1 million dollars each.

ICDA Family Christmas Party: The annual ICDA Family Christmas Party was held on Sunday, December 18th. This year it was held at St. Anselm Parish Hall. We attended the Mass at 1:30 PM at St. Anselm Church located at 12670 Dunks Ferry Road, Philadelphia, PA 19154. Those attending the party were asked to attend Mass and then went to the Party in the School Hall.

News from the Kanes: Jerry and Irene Kane had a nice Thanksgiving dinner at their son Dan’s house. They set up a long table with decorations from the living room to the dining room seating 18 people. After the dinner, the family played a game for entertainment.

Remember in Prayer: Please keep all our members in your prayers. Special prayers for the speedy recovery of Joe Birdsall and Jeff Fitzgerald both who have been in the hospital during this month.

On Saturday November 26th 2016, Jerry and Irene threw a surprise birthday party for their daughter Mary who celebrated her 50th birthday. The family took her to the Dubliner, a boat on the Delaware River which has an Irish Pub which was nestled on the river and located at New Hope, PA. Their

daughter Mary flew home to California on Nov 28th. Christmas Blessings: We wish all of you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year blessed with good health for you and your families. Please feel free to attend our Masses on the fourth Sunday of each month at 11:45 pm in St. Stanislaus, Lansdale, PA. We hope to see you there. James K. Goodwin President/Editor of De Sales Society [email protected]
