Prior to ordering or contracting for a sign for your business, it is recommended that you first contact Community Development Zoning Information (743-1240) to determine if the sign will be allowed. Prior to the installation of a sign, it is required that a building permit be obtained. Permit application packets may be obtained from the Permitting Counter (Room 107). 1. An application packet should contain the following items: a.

Two copies of the completed application. All blanks must be filled out. All questions must be answered. Make certain to state whether the work proposed is to erect, alter or repaint a sign.

b.

If the sign is lighted, a sub-contractor information sheet must be completed indicating the name of the licensed electrician who will be installing the electric wiring. This includes a sign contractor who is also a licensed electrical contractor. Owners may perform their own wiring on wall signs. You will be required to have faulty electrical wiring repaired if noticed by an inspector.

c.

If the owner is installing the sign, an owner/builder affidavit will be required. Owners may install wall signs only. Owners may not install free-standing signs but must have a licensed sign contractor or general contractor perform the service.

d.

Signed "Property Owner's Consent" form. Please note that we need the property owner's consent as opposed to the business owner's consent.

e.

If the sign is to be a freestanding (pylon) sign you will need to submit a site plan, drawn to scale, which includes: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Setbacks from property line to sign; Existing buildings; Street locations; Parking lot; Sidewalks.

If the sign will be installed on the building, a building elevation showing the sign on the structure will be required. f.

Sketch of the sign(s) showing the dimensions and content of the sign(s). If you are adding to an existing freestanding sign, we will need to know the size of the existing sign as well as the size of the additional panel. It is required that a minimum of two copies be submitted.

g.

If the sign is a primary Class "A" (as defined in the Zoning Code) sign, include a notation that street numbers, no less than 6 inches, will be located on the sign. h. A structural form which shows the height from grade, number of posts, depth below grade, size of posts, etc. etc.

******************************************************************************** HELPFUL TIP Make sure all of your figures agree between you application and any drawings you submit. ******************************************************************************** 2. Once the application has been completed, a pre-inspe ction fee of $27.00 is paid to CCBCC, plus a $26.00 pre-application fee. 3. Permitting will process the permit application to Code Compliance and the Zoning Section for review. 4. Code Compliance will conduct a Code required field inspection. The inspection is made to determine the number of the signs (if any) already existing on the property, the linear building front and linear property frontage. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT EVEN IF THE INSPECTOR INDICATES THAT THERE IS NO PROBLEM - THIS DOES NOT CONSTITUTE AUTHORIZATION TO INSTALL THE SIGN. THE SIGN CANNOT BE INSTALLED UNTIL YOU ARE IN RECEIPT OF THE ACTUAL SIGN PERMIT FROM PERMITTING!! 5. The application is returned to the Zoning Section for code compliance review using the report provided by the inspector. A Zoning Technician will notify the applicant if any problems are noted. 6. The Building Plans Examiner will review the application for structural sufficiency. Again, the applicant will be notified if any problems are noted. 7. The process generally takes between 10-14 working days to complete. Call 743-1201 to confirm if the permit is ready to be issued. If the applicant has been notified of any problems, it is required that you wait until the application has returned to Permitting Counter to resubmit any corrected documents. 8. Once the application has been approved by the Zoning Technician and Building Plans Examiner, the building permit is issued. At that time a fee will be charged for the building permit. This fee is separate from the fee already paid for the Zoning site inspection earlier in this process. FEES begin at $26.00 for the first fifty square feet of sign plus 16 cents for each additional square foot. Electrical permit fees are $42.00. UPON RECEIPT OF THE BUILDING PERMIT YOU ARE AUTHORIZED TO INSTALL THE SIGN.

INSPECTIONS REQUIRED 1. Freestanding signs may have posts anchored in footings and slabs. If that is the case, the applicant is required to obtain a footing inspection from the Inspections/Code Compliance Division before pouring the slab. A 24 hour inspection request notice is required. 2. Upon completion of the sign, the applicant is required to call the Inspections/Code Compliance Division for a final inspection. The inspection will consist of electric, structural, and zoning review. All signs must have a final inspection.

PENALTIES The installation of a sign prior to obtaining a building permit will result in a double Zoning fee and quadruple building permit fees being assessed against the permit.

VALIDITY The building permit is valid for a period of six months from the date the permit is issued. A final inspection must be obtained prior to the expiration of the permit. Failure to obtain the final inspection may result in the requirement to obtain another permit for the sign installation. ******************************************************************************** ADDITIONAL HELPFUL TIPS 1. If you contract with someone to install the sign, check with Permitting and Licensing to confirm that the company or individual is properly licensed within Charlotte County. 2.

Do not install any sign without the appropriate permit and inspections. Failure to do so could prove costly in terms of time and money.

3.

When using the services of the County offices, you should avoid visiting or calling the offices between 12:00 noon and 2:00 p.m. if possible. We are at half staff during those hours and may not be able to assist you as quickly as other times of the day.
