Show Me Alliances Fall Conference Celebrates Twentieth Anniversary of SAVE by Jana Wolfe / President-Elect

The MSMA Alliance honored the 20th Anniversary of the AMA Alliance SAVE project at our Fall Conference, October 20-21, in Columbia, Missouri. SAVE, “Stop America’s Violence Everywhere,” came out of the 1995 AMA Alliance Strategic Plan, and gave Alliance members across the nation a common framework to work from in developing projects that focused on eliminating domestic abuse and working with children to stop the spread of violence. We were welcomed to the Old Hawthorne Country Club with Southern grace and charm. It’s always so heartwarming to gather with our friends; reviewing the past several months and planning for the upcoming events. The chatter was all about each other and what had been happening in our counties. We enjoyed a beautifully presented buffet lunch. Ms. Beth Dessem, Executive Director of the Missouri Court Appointed Special Advocates Association, CASA, presented an educational program about the program and volunteers who advocate for abused and neglected children. These volunteers advocate in the best interests of the children in court. The numbers she presented were overwhelming. The Missouri CASA in 2014 served 3,233 children with the assistance of 1,421 dedicated volunteers; these volunteers served over 99,318 hours. There are 21 CASA programs in the state of Missouri, with 22 Judicial Circuits being served. Visit www. mocasa.org for more information. Our next guest speaker was Douglas Schwandt, Chief of Police, University of Missouri, presenting an informative talk on “Curbing Campus Sexual Assault.” He presented a plan of action for parents sending their children away for college. He encouraged parents to find out the school’s reporting policies and to get the numbers for the local police department, school health center, and local community health center, in addition to campus security, local rape crisis center or domestic violence programs. Secondly, he encouraged to “start and keep a conversation going about studying, partying, money matters, and all the things our children need to know as they venture off to college; however, we avoid sex and sexual assault. Start a conversation to help them stay safe and learn about healthy and consensual relationships. Thirdly, he encouraged parents to ask questions. Ask about the schools’ sexual assault policies and prevention programming before you need it, and if they have had lawsuits filed. Lastly, use your sphere of influence. He encouraged those who may have been members of a fraternity or sorority to recruit others to address this concerning and growing issue; if you are a doctor or nurse in a city that is occupied by a college(s) talk to your colleagues and see what they are noticing and what help is needed. He included several website addresses which are listed at the end of this report. We finished our afternoon with an enjoyable activity of making fleece blankets to be distributed at the Rainbow House, an emergency shelter for children in Columbia, Mo. Their mission

Alliance members make fleece blankets for Rainbow House, Columbia, Mo., an emergency shelter for children.

is to keep children safe and to support families in crisis through prevention, assessment and intervention in child abuse and neglect. We finished the evening with a unique and delectable Dutch treat dinner at downtown Bleu Restaurant, known for its signature cuisine. Meredith Corrado, daughter of Donna and Joe Corrado, MD, presented a special preview of her production, “The Rural Surgeon.” Our Board Meeting continued on Wednesday as we gathered again at the Old Hawthorne Country Club. Sue Ann Greco called our meeting to order; pledges were led by immediate past president, Kathy Weigand; the minutes were provided by Gillian Waltman; Deb Snyder reported the treasurer’s account; and the budget and finance report was discussed by. Allene Wright. All were reviewed and approved as corrected by those present. Jana Wolfe, President Elect, presented highlights of the North Central Regional Meeting. Stacy Peters discussed plans for the Holiday Sharing Card and the upcoming MSMA Foundation Dinner, Wild, Wild West, featuring the Miss Sue’s Saloon. Marsha Conant and Diana Corzine updated us on Health; Shirley Collison on Membership; Donna Corrado on Direct Membership; and Gail Holand on Legislation.

Dates to mark on your calendars are:

• Tuesday, February 23 and Wednesday, February 24 •

Day at the Legislature/Advocates for Health Care Baymont Inn in Jefferson City. Friday, March 18 and Saturday, March 19 MSMA Alliance Annual Meeting St. Louis Renaissance Airport Hotel

Show Me Alliances

Energizing Alliances with Ideas from the North Central Conference by Jana Wolfe / President-Elect

Alliance members from 11 states joined together for one energizing North Central States Alliance Regional Leadership Development Conference, co-hosted by the MSMA Alliance and programming by the Kansas Medical Society Alliance in October. We were greeted with St. Louis warmth and hospitality at the Sheraton Clayton Plaza Hotel, and enjoyed socializing in the hotel’s Alexander Lounge, with hors d’oeuvres provided by the St. Louis Metropolitan Medical Association Alliance. St. Louis Art Museum in Forest Park was the venue for dinner and it was marvelous! See photo of group. Guest speaker Julie Newman, AMA Alliance President spoke on a “Prescription for a Healthy Alliance,” and stressed the three C’s: COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE! She asked Alliance members to examine their organization and ask the questions: Are you unique? What do you deliver? Are you known as an expert in the field? Are you a hub of information and solutions for your members and community? Do you have a compelling reason to join or participate? What are you missing? People who join are looking for value. Are your meetings productive, do you communicate? Volunteers must feel they are making a difference. She also impressed the importance of improving and making changes in Alliances: have a plan, mentor new members, communicate, new governance models, retire old programs (NOT members!). Jennifer Giancola, PhD, Saint Louis University Associate Professor, spoke on “Mentoring-A Powerful Way to Develop and Retain Leaders.” She encouraged“leaders guiding leaders.” She suggested getting others involved in creating a program, (a team); decide why in the heck you’re doing this (define the program’s purpose); get the right people paired in the program; don’t forget about the mentoring pairs (ongoing training and social events); celebrate and let them go (recognize pairs and celebrate success); make sure that it’s working (evaluate the program, NOT the individuals). Karen Begrow, Michigan Alliance, presented “Fundraising and Project Ideas,” and summarized a successful children’s charity function. She also suggested reading the book by Carolyn Farb, “The Fine Art of Fundraising.” She also presented on “Deciphering Facts and Myths about Childhood Immunization,” and showed a movie video about a family who had been affected by pertussis. We entered the afternoon with a “Health Literacy” discussion by Pat Graham and Lin Vautrain from Springfield, Illinois. The afternoon ended with a picturesque trolley ride to Saint Louis 10 | Show Me Alliance News | January 2016

University Free Medical Clinic, and a trip downtown to visit the Arch, an old court house, and city garden. We finished the evening with an outstanding performance by student from Loyola Academy, the Voices of Excellence Program and dinner at the hotel’s Alexander’s Restaurant. The three young men, grades 6, 7, and 8, had been tasked to write a speech on “How Can I Work to Prevent Violence in My Community, City, State as a Citizen, the Mayor, the Governor?” Their insight and communication skills were inspiring. Sunday, Grace Wellman presented the North Central Budget Report and opened the discussion for “Hot Topics.” An interactive Q & A produced these: what is your state struggling with and ideas to help; strengthening and maintaining Alliances; the art of delegation; and working across generational lines. She emphasized mission, vision, and goals. She encouraged delegation, to decrease intimidation for leaders; manage your committees (re-evaluate are they necessary?); modernize to new goals; use “task forces” vs committees; look at the mission statement-is it still appropriate/does it still apply? Use “Direct Member” instead of Members At Large. She suggested surveying membership. Some suggestions on “finding new physicians” included establishing a relationship with real-estate agents, the assessor’s office, medical board, student affairs office… just for example. She also suggested using the word “retreat” instead of “conference,” and including “spa-like” (manicures/massages) activities. Missouri’s Mary Shuman presented an enlightening talk on the Alliance Health Education Initiative (AHEI). Michelle Voth from Kansas shared an insightful program and video on marijuanamarketing to youth-a new challenge for Alliances. Claire Applewhite, the author Voices of Excellence Program, wrapped up our meeting. The Voices of Excellence Program empowers students with the basic knowledge of communication tools, such as proper grammar, spelling and format, as well as effective public speaking skills. It is designed to improve written and oral literacy. They confer a voice of excellence that make the good message a great one.

Smoking is NOT for Me Entries Coming Due

Show Me Alliances

by Marsha Conant and Diana Corzine / CO VP Health

We wish all of you a healthy new year! Our goal is to improve the health of our communities and state. Every county health project is a step toward this goal. The “Smoking is NOT for Me” program for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades is continuing this year. Deadline for essays to each county alliance is extended to February 15, 2016. Then each county’s first, second, and third place winners should be postmarked by March 1. Download forms can be found at www.msma.org/alliance. We are again promoting exercise in our MAM (Move across Missouri) project. Please keep track of time or steps. All exercise counts, even housework. Our MAM project was recognized in Florida in October 2015 at the Southern Medical Association Alliance Annual meeting. So send your steps/miles, to us by March 1. State and county Alliance members paused to remember the victims of violence by observing a moment of silence at 11:00 am on October 14, 2015, SAVE Day. The United Health Foundation ranked Missouri 36th overall in 2014 and 34th in obesity and 41st in smokers. So we have a lot of work to do. And don’t forget “Wear Red for Women” on February 6 to raise awareness about women and heart disease. Thank you for all your efforts to improve the health of our state, and we challenge you to go even further!

Membership Goals for the Future by Shirley Collison / VP Membership

Our Alliance year under the leadership of President Sue Ann Greco is moving right along. Keeping our “Eye on the Future” is our number one task. We must have members to do this. How do we do this? The future is in the young medical spouses coming into our communities. Each of us needs to keep them in the front of our minds. Seek new members. Listen for them. Look for them. When you find them, support them, invite them, and include them. Let them know what we do. Across the state we need to communicate, tell our stories, and share our ideas and successes. While we advocate for healthy communities, let us network, educate each other, support each other, and grow. A recent program at the AMA Alliance Annual Meeting featured ways to nurture medical marriages and gave five good reasons to join the Alliance. This is her list: Being an Alliance member..... 1. Demonstrates your allegiance to physician families. Our associations communicate what we value. 2. Gives you access to additional resources to keep your family strong. 3. Gives support for physician couples such as in the “Physician Family Magazine.” 4. Provides you voice toward change. 5. Connects you with a community of remarkable people with diversity, ability and resilience. 6. Provides opportunities to give back. Local alliances work on their own initiatives to improve the health of their individual communities.
