Sherlock Holmes A Play In Two Acts by

Arthur Conan Doyle and

William Gillette March 5, 6, 12, 13, 2010 7:30 P>M> Faith United Church of Christ www.VillagePlayhouse.org

From the Director I would like to thank the Village Playhouse of Wauwatosa for allowing me to direct this production of Sherlock Holmes. It has been an enjoyable and educating experience. The cast is wonderful and full of "Holmesean" knowledge. So much so, in fact, that at times it's rather frightening. I am pleased we are producing the William Gillette version which follows closely the writings of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I'd also like to thank my Assistant Director, Larry and my Stage Manager, Lynn for keeping up the excitement and keeping me in line (or at least trying to!) as well as Michael and Rosie for their patience and understanding. I hope you all enjoy our version of this iconic story.

Did You Know ? William Gillette’s (adpted from Arthur Conan Doyle) opened at the Garrick Theatre on November 6, 1899. and had an initial run of 256 performances. A tentative title was: “ But it was reduce later to : .”

Traveling in 1899 to present the script to Conan Doyle, they met in Ulster’s train station. Gillette showed up disguised as Sherlock Holmes The original production faced sharp, even derisive, criticism from the newspapers, especially about Holmes falling in love. In Doyle’s original novels, Holmes was said to have an “aversion to women”. In June 1903, one of the shadow companies touring the UK, hired Charles Chaplin (12 years old) to play Billy, the paperboy.
