:25/'&21)(5(1&( (;+,%,7,21 It is Denver International Airport’s good fortune to host the 2012 Airport Cities World Conference, and we welcome you to our city, state and airport. Our city is embracing the aerotropolis concept. Denver’s new mayor, the honorable Michael B. Hancock, said in his inauguration speech – given just a few months ago – that his administration is dedicated to turning the area surrounding Denver International Airport into a “bustling ‘aerotropolis’ that will drive job growth and become a regional economic powerhouse.” He said the city would turn the entire 22-mile (35.4-km) corridor between Denver International Airport and the city center into a “Corridor of Opportunity.” The ability to see opportunity and to act is something that is inherent in our city’s collective temperament. The city grew by recognizing that it would have to link itself to the world through primary transportation systems – first railroads, then highways, then commercial flight. And once Denver became a part of global commerce, the city took the opportunity to enhance its economic future by building a new aviation port: Denver International Airport. Opportunity – in the form of an aerotropolis – is again available to us, and we intend to explore this potential. So, I can’t think of a better time for Denver to provide the venue for the Airport Cities World Conference. Best wishes,

Kim Day Manager of Aviation

It seems to me that opportunity is the primary theme of every Airport Cities World Conference, because you are exposed to experienced and talented airport professionals, aviation industry experts, and community and business leaders, who are meeting here to talk about accomplishments and possibilities; sharing ideas and stimulating discussion. Denver is excited to be part of the dialogue. That excitement is shared by Denver International Airport’s community of airlines, concession tenants, ground transportation operators, and all the other companies that operate here. With the greatest pleasure, we extend our hospitality to you, our guests, and hope that opportunity is something you can take away from this conference and bring home.

About Airport Cities “A new strategic approach to airport planning and associated commercial development is gaining prominence around the world. This is the airport city and aerotropolis model. It consists of an airport-centered commercial core (the airport city) and outlying corridors and clusters of aviation-linked businesses that make up the greater aerotropolis. Virtually all commercial functions found in a modern metropolitan downtown are establishing themselves in airport cities and their surrounding aerotropolises.

LOOK FOR YESTERDAY’S BUSIEST TRAIN TERMINALS AND YOU WILL FIND TODAY’S GREAT URBAN CENTERS. LOOK FOR TODAY’S BUSIEST AIRPORTS AND YOU WILL FIND THE GREAT URBAN CENTERS OF TOMORROW.

As an increasing number of commercial activities and businesses locate on and around airports, they are transforming airport areas into new urban growth destinations where air travelers and locals alike work, shop, meet, exchange knowledge, eat, sleep, and are entertained without going more than 15 minutes from the airport. Multimodal transportation infrastructure (air, highway, rail, and links to ports) connect airport city and aerotropolis businesses and people to markets near and far, driving and shaping their growing local, regional and global significance. The airport city and its greater aerotropolis are changing the way we work, the way we live, and the way metropolitan regions grow. In the process, they are creating tomorrow’s world.” Professor John D. Kasarda Conference Chairman Director, Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise, University of North Carolina, USA
