Kyneton NBN Action Kyneton residents wanting much better broadband for their town held the first Kyneton NBN Action meeting upstairs at the Albion Hotel on Wed Apr 10. Joined by two telecommunications experts from outside the town, the newly-formed group discussed strategies to get Kyneton noticed by NBN Co and added to their fibre optic network’s construction schedule. All present agreed that Kyneton’s broadband internet infrastructure is in need of upgrade, and that the town’s economy will benefit from improved internet performance. All were emphatic that fibre to the home was what was required to assure the improved internet performance the township needs.

Andrew Hedge, convenor of the group said that members will develop a survey on the town’s internet usage for residents and workers. The group aims to hold talks with local and national political representatives to seek to ensure that Kyneton does not miss out receiving a full fibre rollout no matter what the result of the forthcoming election. The group invites all who are interested in these issues to come to its second meeting at the Albion Hotel on Wednesday May 8 at 7pm. Enquiries [email protected].

Bluestone Coffers Filling

Kyneton Toy Library Petition

Youth, Drugs & Community

The Downton Abbey Garden Party held at Skelsmergh Hall on March 17 raised $3000 towards the refurbishment of Kyneton’s Bluestone Theatre. Coordinator of the businesses that organised the event Christine Lauder of the Dressing Table, thanked all businesses who assisted in making the event such a success, and gave special thanks to major sponsor Emma of Ladyz That Lunch. Everyone embraced the theme with Edwardian Lord’s and Ladies arriving in their finery from near and far. Music from the Naturally Cool Big Band filled the old bluestone flour mill and soon had people dancing.

Volunteers at Kyneton Toy Library are urging members of t he community to sign their petition to Macedon Ranges Shire Council to provide adequate storage space for their toy collection at the Maternal & Child Health Centre in Hutton St. Just prior to recently completed renovations to the Centre, volunteers were dismayed to discover that the room they had used to store their toys for the last 20 years was being reduced to a wall of cupboards to store more than 350 toys. Toy library volunteers have had several discussions with Council staff seeking additional storage on site but have instead been offered off-site storage options within a 5 minute driving distance of Kyneton. Robyn Bell, President of Kyneton Toy Library says that operating the library from two different locations is impractical and will threaten the viability of the Toy Library. “Parents already struggle to return toys with active children and toddlers in tow. Being forced to visit two locations to pick up and return toys will not make it easier and will not help the library grow to meet the needs of the Kyneton community in the future,” Ms Bell said.

Annual deaths in Australia from all drug related causes exceed the road toll. The estimated cost of drug abuse to the Australian community is $6 bn. The costs in terms of human suffering are high. As a community service, the local CBMA group (Christian Business Men A u s t r al i a) h a s a r r an g ed t h e information evening. Admission free.

The proceeds from the Garden Party along with the $4000 raised at the “Music & Mirth at the Mechs” concert takes the community’s contribution to the restoration of the Bluestone Theatre to $7000 of the $20,000 target set by the Council.

New Book for Children

Health Services: Have Your Say

Kyneton children’s author Shirley Coughlin recently signed copies of her latest book ‘The Girl in the Mirror’ at Aesop’s Attic. ‘The Girl in the Mirror’, Shirley’s third book, is a story about Mandy, a young girl in the year 1960 who finds an old mirror, and to her surprise finds that it is a conduit to the future where she meets another young girl, Stephanie, who happens to be a prisoner in an old derelict house. Mandy, her older brother and his annoying friend set out to discover a way of freeing Stephanie – but how? There is a fifty year time span separating them from Stephanie. Shirley’s previous books ‘Beyond the Flood’ and ‘Toby and the Pirates’, and ‘The Girl in the Mirror’ are all on sale at Aesop’s Attic Bookshop and can also be borrowed from Kyneton Library. Shirley’s books are suitable for children 9 – 12 years of age.

Residents in the Macedon Ranges are being asked to have their say on the future of health services in the Shire, ahead of a $7.43 million development at Kyneton Hospital. Kyneton District Health Service, Cobaw Community Health Service, Macedon Ranges Health, and Macedon Ranges Shire Council are working together to plan jointly around the future health needs of Shire residents. Kyneton District Health Chief Executive Officer Jennifer Gale said input from the public was welcome, for the hospital project and for other aspects of the provision of health services delivered locally. ‘The State Health Department is looking at who is delivering what services in the region, and to map out the best plan for each service for the years ahead,’ she said. Ms Gale said the new health and wellbeing development at the hospital will provide permanent space for community mental health clinics, primary care, outreach community care and room for visiting health professionals in expanded consulting spaces. ‘While the hospital will never provide intensive care or high-risk surgery, the consultants are looking at whether there is a demand for other services, such as chemotherapy, which we could provide locally rather than patients having to travel long distances.’ The deadline for public input is Friday 26 April. Ideas and submissions can be sent to by email to [email protected] or by post to Hospital Future, PO Box 34, Kyneton 3444.

Biggest Morning Tea at Airfield Kyneton Aero Club and Transaero Pty Ltd would like to invite the Kyneton community to join them at the Kyneton Airfield for a Biggest Morning Tea with a difference. Now in its 6th year, this Biggest Morning Tea attracts aircraft from across Victoria and interstate. Antique, Warbird, Classic and Sport aircraft descend on Kyneton Airfield where their crews enjoy morning tea in the hangar to raise money for the Cancer Council. This is a great opportunity to visit the airfield, watch the aircraft taking off and landing, mingle with pilots and aero club members over a cuppa, and help us raise funds for a worthy cause. Equally enjoyable for children and adults, make sure you mark it in your calendar to be at the Kyneton Airfield on Saturday 18 May from 10am to 12noon.

Kyneton Connections has written to Macedon Ranges Shire Councillors suggesting that for each of the Shire’s major towns the Council should establish a standing Consultative Committee chosen by local community groups with whom Council Officers would consult about the details of proposed local projects. The proposal was prompted by the current concerns about the Barkly Square Pavilion and the Kyneton Toy Library but Kyneton Connections cited the Landscape Plan for the Mechanics Reserve and planning for the Kyneton Visitor Information Centres as other instances where consultation could have been better. “Kyneton Connections sees this suggestion as a constructive proposal to assist ensuring that all affected by proposed projects have the opportunity to contribute before those projects are too advanced for amendment.” Kyneton Connections President Eric Dearricott said.

Copy Centre Upgrade The three Windarring Copy Centres in Kyneton, Castlemaine and Gisborne have recently undergone a facelift to promote the range of new products and services for businesses and the local community. New equipment, new logo, new website and new signage mark the relaunch of better servicing the community and ensuring ongoing and continued employment for people with disabilities. Windarring Executive Director, Bev Vines spoke of the future potential of each of the Copy Centres now working together as one Print Business to service the region, sharing equipment to enable a broader range of products and services with a quick turn around time for larger print runs. “We have developed a business relationship with commercial Print and Technology company, Viatek, who have supported us to develop our business and ensure we have the best modern equipment thus providing quality digital printing” said Bev. The Copy Centre Area Manager Phil Tunzi agreed that going into a business relationship with a company as solid as Viatek has enabled the Copy Centres to be a more competitive and higher functioning business offering the customer more for their money. The three Copy Centres operate as part of the Commonwealth Government Australian disability Enterprise (ADE) program and provide employment for 20 Supported Employees. The Federal Government provides minimal funding to support the Supervisor’s salary, but the remaining income has to be generated by the enterprise operating on a purely business model. The supported employees receive an award based wage as well as training and development to undertake the various tasks of the business so as to ready them to make the transition on to open employment. The managers of the Copy Centres welcome you to drop in and view the range of products available.
