ALFA R36: Set up USB 3G Dongle as a Local Hotspot This is a basic guide to quickly set up the ALFA R36 to wirelessly re-broadcast the Internet connection from a USB 3G Dongle locally to multiple wireless-enabled devices. Advanced configuration is beyond the scope of this guide, users should refer to the full instruction manual for a description of its capabilities. Ensure the USB 3G adaptor is plugged in (See datasheet on our website for a list of compatible devices) and the R36 has its antenna attached before switching power on. Using a wireless enabled device (tablet,/ netbook for example) scan for local sources, Depending on what you are using you should see something similar to fig 01.

Technical Information

Select ALFA_AP from the list and connect to it in the same way as you would normally connect to a WiFi source. Using your device’s Web browser enter 192.168.2.1 in the address bar, a window like fig.02 should pop onto the screen.

Default username is admin, password is admin.

Click on Easy Setup to continue fig.04

Select the 3G dongle radio button to begin the wizard to connect to a 3G Broadband source.

Once you have logged in you should be greeted by the screen in fig 03, notice the flashing Connected Status

There is a check box on screen marked Budget Control, this is a useful feature which helps prevent you from exceeding your data allowance if you have a limit on your tariff; fig 06 shows some example settings.

Below is an example of a particular device from 3 networks.

On this screen we configure the settings for your 3G Dongle. These vary between each service provider so you may need to consult the documentation which came with your device, or your service provider.

fig 07 shows the settings for the wireless LAN – this is what you will be connecting your wireless device to in order to access the Internet. SSID Choice is the name you will see when scanning for available WiFi networks, you can change it to something more meaningful if you wish. We strongly advise adding some security to this connection in order to stop unauthorised connections. fig 08 shows example settings:

At this point you will be disconnected from the R36 as it reconfigures. Give it a few moments to sort itself out. - Then scan for available WiFi networks Select the SSID you gave the R36. This time you will have to enter security settings or a passphrase - depending on which options you selected on fig 08 - in order to connect. fig.09

Once you have connected – congratulations! You now have access to the Internet. If you want to confirm your connection settings log back into the R36 as before; the screen should now look something like this:
