ANNUAL REPORT 2016

Reflecting on 2016

A letter from Ben

Seattle. Is. Poppin’ The innovative energy is palpable, and so is the desire of our community to be the change we wish to see. Still, outside Seattle Works' Pioneer Square office, we are reminded that Seattle’s rising tide is not lifting all boats. The state of emergency on homelessness and housing is real. Our environment faces serious threats, and a history of racial discrimination continues to threaten Seattle's oppressed communities. And in the wake of the presidential election there is a groundswell of need to act locally. Seattle Works is important now, more than ever, as a gateway for people and companies to connect with one another and the nonprofit sector. To get the skin in the game we need to build a stronger, more resilient region. Reflecting on 2016 I am proud of the strides Seattle Works has made toward advancing our mission. We settled into our new home at the Impact Hub Seattle - home to one of the largest concentrations of social entrepreneurs in the country. We are leading by example and implemented a groundbreaking paid family leave policy. We welcomed many new corporate, philanthropic, and nonprofit partners to the fold. And we spearheaded an exciting new partnership with Leadership Tomorrow, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, United Way of King County, and ArtsFund that culminated in an epic board speed dating event. What does all this actually mean? It means... schools in the Seattle community received much-needed face-lifts, painting, furniture, and technology. Public parks were upgraded with custom-built infrastructure, revitalized trails, and protected from invasive wildlife. Alumni from the College Success Foundation and Rainier Scholars now have access to board training. Local affordable housing organizations received unexpected donations from Seattle Works partner companies and in-kind donations for residents. A senior living center had its community garden revitalized. It means, that because of your support, transplants saw the Seattle Freeze melted through service. In 2016 we helped thousands of Seattleites become better connected to one another and their community, inspired to do more and give more. Seattle Works serves as a salient testimonial to the impact of volunteerism and human relationships and I am so, so proud of the role we are playing. While this past year was a big year, our organization has high aspirations to orchestrate more excellent programs and change in the community. We are on a mission and we couldn’t do it without you. Thank you,

BEN REULER

A Career Stemming From Volunteerism

Seattle Works' Volunteer Spotlight: Andie Almeida

Once settled in at work and her new apartment, Andie started craving a deeper connection to Seattle. All it took was a simple Google search, “Volunteer in Seattle” and she found her way to Seattle Works. Sound familiar? That’s probably how many of you reading this found us too! A few clicks around the website and Andie found herself signing up for projects at Girlvolution and Raven Rock Ranch. Two nonprofits Andie still volunteers with to this day. “I always saw Seattle Works as a connector to all the causes I really care about,” says Andie about her growing relationship with Seattle Works.

Andrea (far right) volunteers at Seattle Work's Swank!

“My experience with Seattle Works is always so organic and instantly gratifying for everyone involved,” Andie reflected on how her relationship with Seattle Works has grown since she first got involved. She is looking forward to becoming a certified Bridge: Board Training faculty member this Spring.

As a faculty member she will be able to share her passion and knowledge for the nonprofit sector with those who are also interested in meeting their nonprofit leadership goals. Andrea is a graduate of Florida State University, where she earned her Bachelors in Business Administration and Finance, as well as Loyola Marymount University, where she completed her Master's in Urban Education Policy and Legislation. After completing General Electric’s Finance Management program and serving for two years with Teach for America, Andrea found her dream job at Casey Family Programs as a Financial Analyst based in Seattle. In her words, “I want to give back to Seattle Works, because it helped me so much this past year to help me get connected to Seattle and give back in a way that truly fits me.” Thank you to all of Seattle Works’ amazing donors and volunteers who continue to make stories like Andie's come true. Without your support we wouldn’t be able to serve volunteers like Andie.

Para Los Niños

NON PROFIT SPOTLIGHT

In 2016 Seattle Works was enlisted by Hilton Worldwide to organize a day of service for its local Seattle employees. After working closely with Hilton to determine impact areas and objectives, we knew Para Los Niños was the perfect match.

In 2003, a group of Latino parents gathered to talk about education. As a result of this meeting, Para Los Niños was born with the following priorities: to support the education of Latino children, with a focus on early childhood development; to maintain and promote their culture and language; and to teach English as a second language in order to develop leadership and civic engagement for parents in the community. Hilton Hotels and Resorts believes in Para Los Niños' mission and wanted to contribute lasting changes to help the organization and it's children prosper. Through this partnership, Para Los Niños' received the following support : - 210 hrs of service from 42 volunteers - 100 well-stocked Mentor-Packs for students - 10 new tablets to promote STEM education - 3 new tiny tables and 18 kid-sized chairs - 745 books prepared to be given to youth

"I have been thinking all this weekend about how beautiful the room is and I can't wait to see the faces of the kids when they walk in. I am really thankful for this opportunity of partnership and hope we can continue working together. I feel as happy as the room looks!" -Lupita Torrez, Executive Director, Para Los Niños
