Shared Knowledge:

ICT Integration in Pedagogical Context Advantages: • • • • •
Increased learning motivation of students. Increased learning experences of students. Increased interaction among students and between students and teachers. Familiarity or ability to use ICT increased among students. Students perceived that learning can happen any time, anywhere; teachers and school is not the only learning environment. Hopefully this experience, will will contribute to developing effective learning habits among students.
Disadvantages: • • • •
Require additional times for teachers to prepare lesson. Need more adequate ICT facilities at schools. Resistance to change, esp. among teachers above 40 years old. Need more budget alocated for ICT facilities and maintenance.
Center for Information and Communication Technology for Education (Pustekkom) Department of National Education Indonesia http://www.pustekkom.go.id
ICT Integration in Pedagogical Context Effectiveness of the training;
• Generally, all participants said that the training was “effective” because, conceptually, it is easily understood and implemented, but only under some conditions: ― availability of adequate ICT facilities (such as, PCs, LCD Projector, internet access, etc.); and ― ICT literacy of teachers. Most students are more computer literate than most of teachers (esp. teachers above 40 years old).
Comments and Recommendations:
• Due to the language barriers, it would be more effective if training is implemented on a country-by-country basis in local languages. • The improvement of teachers’ competency in integrating ICT into teaching should be followed by the improvement of ICT facilities at schools, and providing sufficient budgets. Also need recognition (such as certification, allowance, etc.) for teachers to motivate them to participate in training. • Pustekkom will conduct this kind of training annually for teachers and will recommend that the Department of Education publish a certification programme for teacher ICT competency.

Transfer/shared Knowledge:
Similar Activities Conducted by Pustekkom: • Annually, Pustekkom conducts ICT-based learning materials development for teachers and other professionals, such as (basic computer and internet, programming, graphic design, animation, web design, ICT integration into teaching-learning proccess training, etc.;

SchoolNet Teacher Training Effectiveness of the training; • One participant (Mr. Nazwir Nawawi) admitted that he couldn’t apply the training at his school. Some possible causes: ― Language barrier ― Lack of basic knowledge of computer programs, such as Macromedia Flash ― Training was too short (a week); and ― Age factor (he is 52 years old). • Two other participants (Mr. Suarta and Mr. Edi Purwanto) were able to apply the results of the training in their schools. They shared their knowledge with other teachers both in their schools and beyond. • Mr. Edi Purwanto developed his own web and uploaded his works on it. His website is: http://www.myfisika.net .

SchoolNet Teacher Training Comments and Recommendations: 1. Training requires special prerequisite qualifications and participants need more time; • In our case, one participant was sent to the training but failed to apply it in the school when he returned since his computer skills are not advanced enough. • All participants said that the duration of training was too short, therefore they need more training. 2. Participants above 40 years old who have no basic computer skills are not recomended to participate in this kind of training. 3. Due to the language barriers, the training would be more effective if it conducted in each country (in local languages).

Learning Circle (Online Collaboration) Conclusion: • Learning Circle activities did not work well for Indonesian participants (only two teachers participated actively) due to language barriers. The two active participants were able to speak English fluently compared to the other participants. • But all participants stated that the Learning Circle activities are advantageous. Some advantages are as follows: ― Teachers and students get to know their peers from other countries; ― Participants can share experiences and broaden their horizons regarding culture and teaching-learning strategies; ― Students in ASEAN countries can share knowledge with each other.

Learning Circle (Online Collaboration) Comments and Recommendations: 1. Learning Circles activities have positive advantages, but the language barrier poses a problem and limits their workability. • Participants recomend that: ― Teachers who have no difficulty in English language should be encouraged to participate in Learning Circles and similar activities, such as iearn.org, etc. ― Learning Circles and similar activities should be localized (local languages) to be made more applicable for Indonesian teachers. ― Learning Circle activities should be designed to be more entertaining and attractive. 2. This year, Pustekkom will try to apply online collaboration (similar to Learning Circle activities) in ten pilot schools.
