Suitable for: Social Studies – Early Settlements in Upper Canada – Grade 3 History – British North America – Grade 7 Language – All Grades The Arts – Drama – All Grades This program focuses on the experiences of citizens during the war from 1812-15. It has two parts - the first is a role-playing activity, where each student takes on the role of an actual person who lived in 1812. They are given the events that affected their character and must role-play how they believe that person would have reacted to them. The second part is rooted in the specific historic environment of the museum your class has chosen to visit: • At Mackenzie House The printing press at Mackenzie House provides an opportunity for participants to explore propaganda in the War of 1812. Students will create their own piece of War of 1812 propaganda to take home. • At Colborne Lodge Students will learn how the townswomen supported the York Militia by sewing their regimental colours (flag). Following this tradition, students design and make their own class “colours.”

• At Gibson House Museum, Montgomery’s Inn and Todmorden Mills Heritage Site These sites offer historic food experiences that teach students about the roles women played during the war and how militia service affected the home front. Students will eat what they’ve made in the kitchen a rewarding and memorable experience. hours 2 $5.31 plus tax
