SCHOOL COMMUNITY COUNCIL PICKS Thank you very much to Amanda Gent for her Picks!! 1. If I Stay by Gayle Forman: If I Stay is a young adult novel by Gayle Forman published in 2009. The story follows 17-year-old Mia Hall as she deals with the aftermath of a catastrophic car accident involving her family. In a coma, Mia has an out-of-body experience, and watches as friends and family gather at the hospital where she is being treated. Mia watches as her memories flash before her eyes as she comes to realize that she must decide if she should wake up and lead a life far more difficult than she ever anticipated, or slip away and die. Her decision will determine her fate. Wikipedia.org 2. The Forsaken by Lisa M. Stasse (recommended ages 12 and up). The Forsaken is the first novel of a trilogy written by Lisa M Stasse which was published on 10 July 2012. It is centered on and narrated by sixteenyear-old Alenna Shawcross, an orphan from UNA (United Northern Alliance) which is a merger of Canada, the United States and Mexico after a global economic meltdown. The novel, which is set in the present tense, follows Alenna as she learns to survive on Prison Island Alpha - an island where the government sends teenagers who fail the GPPT (Government Personality Profile Test). Wikipedia.org 3. Theordore Boone: Kid Lawyer by John Grisham: Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer, John Grisham's first book for middle-grade readers-and book one in the trilogy will no doubt have wide appeal. The only child of two busy attorneys, Theo’s passion in life is the law. He hangs out at the courthouse in his small city, and he knows every lawyer, judge, court clerk and cop in town. In a closet-sized office, he gives legal advice to classmates when their parents are filing for divorce or their pets are charged with violating the leash law. When a big murder case goes to tri al, Theo organizes a field trip for his government class to observe the first day’s proceedings. Though Theo longs to be either a “famous trial law yer” or a “great judge,” he knows he’s in over his head when he finds out about a mysterious eyewitness to the murder. No one else is aware of the witness’ existence, and it’s up to Theo to convince him to come forward and tell the judge what he knows. Otherwise, a guilty murderer will walk free.
