Thank you to all the members that came down on the long weekend to help out on patrol. It was a busy weekend with fantastic weather. Scarboro also had a great weekend down in Esperance for

Esperance

the country carnival. Great results and we had lots of fun. Come down to the club bar on Friday for a

drink. No better way to end the week than in our bar with a great location and relaxed atmosphere.

Have a great week Scarboro Members!

From the President Some sad news to begin our week, with the sudden passing of John Fussell during the Mandurah Australia Day Swim last Monday. John and his family were active members of Scarboro for many years and we will miss him around the club and at our Sunday morning swims. John was also a big supporter and coach of the R&R teams at Scarboro SLSC. We wish his family all the best at this very sad and difficult time. We also have had some happy news with the safe arrival of a new baby girl for Paul and Amy Long. Eva Jean Long was born Tuesday evening and I’m told mum and bub are doing very well. Congratulations to Paul, Amy, Archie and Florence. We had some great representation at the Esperance Country Carnival over the long weekend, with Scarboro dominating the ski and boat events. At least in the numbers of craft we took down. Disappointing that many of our metro neighbors didn’t attend in great numbers but Esperance was beautiful and a great place to visit, with the Esperance clubbies taking great care of us all. This weekend we have the Sunset Sprints at Cottesloe for the Boaties on Friday night, which is great to go and watch and on Sunday the Junior competitors will be at Leighton. Good luck to all our competitors. Friday night our bar is open as usual. We wish Bob Blake well in his recovery from a nasty dog bite, Bob has been bedridden for a couple of weeks on some serious antibiotics. All the best Bobby. I’m sure we’ll see you back on the beach soon. Anyone planning to go to Aussies needs to let Jess, in the office, know by next Friday 6 February so we can confirm accommodation bookings and get you entered. See you on the beach Elise

From the Vice President Expressions of (dis)Interest Sought Scarboro are hosting both the Junior and Senior State Titles on consecutive weekends in March. The dates are the 14/15th of March for the Juniors and the 21st/22nd for the Seniors. I’ll be asking people to commit to helping setup, be available across the two days and pull down for each weekend. While I can probably count on the help of the older brigade and the IRB and jet ski teams it would be good if those competing at the seniors could help with the juniors and vice versa. By hosting both these events the club receives significant funding that goes towards paying the costs of what we all enjoy doing. Surfin’ Safari Over the Australia Day weekend Scarboro competitors went in search of waves on both sides of the continent and found them at the Manly/Freshwater carnival in NSW and at Esperance in the Great South of WA. As far as competition went, Josh, Claire, Gloria, Suzie and Maddie missed out as boat rowing was cancelled at Manly in 12ft plus conditions but Josh, the returning prodigal son and the ladies cracked some waves at Newport. Down at Esperance there was solid surf all weekend with the boaties and paddlers picking up some great waves both in and out of competition. Washed Up at U23? The biggest story from Esperance was the changing of the guard in the age group divisions of boat rowing with the U19s trouncing the U23. Canny sweep Mark Irwin must have sensed it and palmed off his hitherto champion male crew on the unsuspecting Justin Donnelly. Rumour has it that weeks of drinking and cavorting may have taken the edge off the U23s and I believe they’ve taken vows of temperance and chastity to regain their mojo. Je Suis Charlie At the post carnival party and with the U23s males on the wagon, it fell to Oliver Tester and the women to defend the right to free speech or possibly the right to offend. Precious, possibly fragile or just tempting people to pop them, one crew was wrapped in bubbles while another masqueraded as virginal nuns. Ollie lampooned a deity, fortunately for him the Christian one with Esperance a known hotspot for religious fundamentalism of a different persuasion.

Juniors Great Aust day weekend Country carnival had by all who made the trip down to Esperance’s Twilight beach. What a great spot with some great results coming Scarboro’s way. Finishing 4th overall on 109 points out of 15 clubs who entered was a great effort by all concerned, with the 12 or so juniors helping with that result in a big way. With a good sized wave coming through, it certainly sorted a few clubs out. This weekend sees us at Leighton beach Fremantle for our 4th carnival, this being mainly a teams Carnival. Should be a good fun carnival for all that compete, and a chance for new competitors to have ago. This is the last carnival to qualify for entry into State Qualifying carnival at Trigg beach on 14-15/2/2015. Great Sunday at Scarboro by all accounts with conditions about as good as they get. The surf swimming sessions are coming along great with Dave Locke showing all the finer points of this discipline which the competitors can take with them into carnivals and timing for these couldn’t be better with the carnivals we have coming up. These sessions will continue on Saturday morning at 8.00 – 9.00 am and Tuesday evening 5.00-6.00pm for this month, and will advise on the continuation of these in the future editions on the Echo More info re Dave Locke’s Red Sharks swim programmes in this issue, and as follows below,

Ski Scribbles Team Scarboro was certainly back on the map at the Esperance surf carnival last weekend. Our ski crew were in all the finals, took out most of the places and in some instances, were the final. Results are yet to be posted up on the SLSWA website so will include them next week. Pondy got the trailer down and back without incident. Surf was up both Saturday and Sunday. A great and scary time was had by all, just ask Kate and Ali, and no gear broken, bonus. Next surf carnival is at Leighton on the 8th Feb, entries close on the 4th. Ski paddlers burger BBQ after training on the 7th, let Bob know if you’ll be there for catering, cost $5. Scarboro Cup will be back on this Friday. Volker is in the bush for a couple of weeks so here’s the chance for the others in the top 5 to catch up. Meanwhile, Courty (Aust Day) and Volker and Warren (on the 30th) open the year with birthdays. Reminder re the State Masters at Mullaloo on the 28th Feb, entries close the 19th, entry forms are in the gym. There will be a meeting of all ski paddler masters on Saturday 14th Feb after training to confirm teams and allocate doubles.

Boaties Banter The boat carnival started with a delay as the course had to be shifted due to the conditions. By 10.15 we had shifted the tents, boats and trailers and all was in place for racing to start. With a large and challenging break it was nice to see the experience of all our sweeps come through and a different style of racing used that more suited these conditions. It was more of a wait and see approach and pick your way out rather than charge out and get thumped. This waiting approach paid off as you will see in the days results below. What a great experience for our younger rowers to get the opportunity to compete in large surf. I was also very pleased to have someone comment to me on the beach how it was nice to see the Scarboro rowers pitching in to help everyone, shifting boats and gear and generally having a great time. Well done all. Congratulation to Paul and Amy Long on the arrival of Eva Jean Long on Tuesday . Results for the day are as follows: Open Men: Scarboro Black Scarboro Fubar Scarboro Colts

Sunday Swim Due to expectant temperatures on Sunday I will not be running the McGovern Marathon, but will be running with the original scheduled event, the Kikiros Marathon. Hopefully there will be another Sunday where we can run the McGovern, but will keep you posted on that. See you on the start line. Adam Young

March Past News March Past training will be at 6pm tonight (Thurs 29 Jan) , and also 8:30am Sunday (finishing in time for the club swim), on the sand in front of the club. We still need a couple more to complete the team, new members welcome.

Rottnest Channel Swim My team and I require a skipper and boat for the Rotto Channel Swim, our previous skipper had to pull out of the competition unfortunately. Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated. Please don't hesitate in contacting me at 0406 164 407 or via email. Kind regards Patrick
