Saint Luke’s College Names Interim President College also undergoes name change as part of new bylaws

D ean L. Hubbard, Ph.D., has been appointed acting presi-

dent for Saint Luke’s College of Health Sciences. The term of his appointment is open-ended while the college conducts a national search to identify a permanent president. Hubbard recently retired after 25 years as president of Northwest Missouri State University. Under his tenure, the university was a four-time winner of the Missouri Quality Award and a first-place winner of the National Association of College and University Business Officers Higher Education Award. He was a founding member of the board of the Excellence in Missouri Foundation and in 1998 received the Missouri Governor’s Quality Leadership Award. Hubbard is internationally recognized for his work in the

field of total quality management. He has written, edited, or contributed to more than a dozen books and has published over 20 articles on the topic of quality. Saint Luke’s College was changed to Saint Luke’s College of Health Sciences as a part of new bylaws established when the College became fully incorporated in May 2010. The new name anticipates future programmatic growth.

Professor Lucy Hood Named “Research Coach Extraordinaire” T he Rev. Stephen W. Overall, Director of Clinical Pastoral Education for Saint Luke’s

Health System, recently presented Professor Lucy Hood, Ph.D., with an award naming her “Research Coach Extraordinaire” for her work with the Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program. In September 2000, the CPE program of Saint Luke’s Hospital added a research component to its Pastoral Education curriculum with the support and direction of Dr. Hood. From that time to the present, she has directed the research effort of the Chaplain Residency program. Under Dr. Hood’s direction, residents are taught to distinguish the various types of research objectives and methods. She also offers one-on-one coaching sessions to help students explore ways to help advance mind/body/spirit health and wellbeing. The Rev. Stephen W. Overall, Director of Clinical Pastoral Education for Saint Luke’s Health System, presented Lucy Hood, Ph.D., with an award recognizing her work with CPE’s research program.

Students have always given Dr. Hood high praise for her dedication and commitment to their research efforts. “I have observed the impact of Dr. Hood’s instruction and mentoring for over 10 years,” said Rev. Overall. “I cannot imagine our program without her at the ‘helm of our research program.’”

Saint Luke’s Health System Wins Quality Award S aint Luke’s Health System is the recipient of the 2010

Missouri Quality Award (MQA) from the Excellence in Missouri Foundation. The MQA is the official state recognition for excellence in quality leadership. Modeled after the prestigious Baldrige Performance Excellence Program, the MQA is recognized as one of the strongest state-level quality award programs in the country. This is the fifth time Saint Luke’s has won the Missouri Quality Award. Saint Luke’s Hospital won three times, in 1995, 1999, and 2002. Saint Luke’s Health System won previously in 2006. The flagship of the system, Saint Luke’s Hospital, was the first organization to become a three-time recipient of the MQA, and it received the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2003. It is also a two-time recipient of Magnet designation for nursing excellence by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Nursing Research Expands N ursing research at Saint Luke’s Hospital has advanced to the next level of professionalism, thanks to grants that fund a new director and expansion of the nursing research program. Jacque Carpenter, R.N., M.S., Ph.D., was appointed as the director of nursing research for Saint Luke’s Hospital. The position was developed to lead and expand clinical research and was made possible by funding from the late Helen Nelson and Saint Luke’s Hospital Foundation. In addition, the Victor E. Speas Foundation, Bank of America, trustee, awarded a grant to support clinical nursing research programs at Saint Luke’s Hospital. The program received $66,000 for expansion and more opportunities for nurses to conduct research. Dr. Carpenter works closely with Saint Luke’s Hospital’s Nursing Research Council to lead a comprehensive nursing research program that impacts clinical, educational, and administrative nursing practice. The clinical nursing research program is one of a select few where bedside nurses actually perform research, allowing them to impact patient outcomes and improve quality of care.

2010 Clinical Induction Ceremony S ixty-five junior class nursing students participated

in the annual Clinical Induction ceremony held Oct. 21, 2010, at the Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral in Kansas City, Mo. The ceremony is comprised of three symbolic areas:

• Donning of the White Coat – The white coat is a symbol of clinical service and care. The ceremony marks a student’s transition from classroom learning to clinical learning, at which time the student begins caring for patients in hospitals and other health care settings. • Blessing of the Hands – Nurses’ hands extend care, healing, and

comfort to others. Hearts and hands touch lives. • Lighting of the Candle – In the tradition of Florence Nightingale, nurses light candles as symbols of the care and devotion they administer to the sick and injured in the practice of nursing, as they recite the Nightingale Pledge.

New Patient Simulation Technology N ursing students now have more tools to develop their skills, thanks to new patient simulation technology in the Learning Resource Center.

Several state-of-the-art patient simulators were purchased this summer, funded by Saint Luke’s Hospital Foundation and Saint Luke’s Hospital. The simulators were fully implemented into the new curriculum in the fall 2010 semester. Clinical simulations provide a safe, effective learning environment in which to practice the role of a professional nurse. They ensure that all students experience standardized, faculty-directed situations that mimic the reality of a clinical environment. The patient simulators allow students to demonstrate procedures, communications, decision-making, and critical thinking through techniques such as role play in a clinical setting.

Faculty Awards The most recent Saint Luke’s College Faculty Awards recognized three instructors for their outstanding work. The Professional Achievement Award recognizes a faculty member that is engaged in scholarly activity, involved in professional organizations, and participates in health-related community service. The award was presented to Assistant Professor Kay Luft, Ph.D., R.N. The Isabel Curdy Teaching Excellence Award recognizes a faculty member who exhibits the following: • Excellence in teaching as recognized by peers and students

• • •

Commitment to nursing and Saint Luke’s College Professional role model Demonstration of creative approach in working with students • Humanistic advocate for students and student learning This year the students and faculty selected Assistant Professor Kathleen Hughes, M.N., B.S.N., R.N. Howser Day

N ancy Howser, wife of the late Dick Howser, congratulated Kim-

berly Justice, recipient of the 2010 Dick Howser Memorial Nursing Scholarship, and Lindsay Crass, the 2009 scholarship winner, in a pregame ceremony prior to a Kansas City Royals’ game in June. Each year, the Foundation selects one outstanding student pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at Saint Luke’s College for this two-year scholarship in memory of former Royals manager Dick Howser.

Dick Howser Memorial Nursing Scholarship recipients Lindsay Crass, left, and Kimberly Justice with Nancy Howser, wife of the late Dick Howser.

Dick Howser managed the Royals from 1981 to 1986 and lead the team to its 1985 World Series championship. The scholarship fund was established following Howser’s death from a brain tumor in 1987, in appreciation of the nurses who cared for him during his stay at Saint Luke’s Hospital. The scholarships are awarded thanks to generous support from the Kansas City community and the Howser family.

Geribeth Lhuillier Auslander I worked for several years at Saint Luke’s as a head nurse then part-time on med-surg units. After time off for my family, I began working at St. Joseph Hospital, where my biggest fear was not having interns and residents to rely on. I soon realized I didn’t need them, thanks to the excellent education received at Saint Luke’s. I became interested in GI nursing and worked 18 years at Shawnee Mission Medical Center in GI endoscopy, and I presently work at Endoscopic Imaging, an outpatient GI center. I can still hear Miss Weinhold saying “Girls, remember this, the doctors will ask you,” and Miss Dille making us do everything until we got it perfect. I’m grateful to them for laying the foundation that gave us a rewarding career in nursing as a Saint Luke’s grad.

Nancy Simmons Sparks I have three children and eight grandkids, ages 4 to 20. I worked in a doctor’s office for 13 years and surgery for 13 years. I have been in a rehab unit at Bothwell Regional Health Center in Sedalia for 10 1/2 years.

Join us at the alumni reunion next year! Sandy Pearson Parke I escaped Hurricane Katrina, after 25 years in New Orleans. I am a breast cancer survivor. I have had a multifaceted career and earned my BSN and MBA. I am also a mother.

Mo., serving as the Stroke Coordinator and working toward obtaining Stroke Center designation from the Joint Commission for the hospital.
