There are few more exotic holiday destinations than India. The options that it offers are as varied and exciting as the country itself.

royal resorts

India’s amazing diversity offers you everything you could ever want in a holiday. Bounded by the majestic Himalayan ranges in the north and edged by a spectacular coastline. Surrounded by three seas, India is a vivid kaleidoscope of landscapes, magnificent historical sites and royal cities, golden beaches, misty mountain retreats, colourful people, rich cultures and festivities. At any time of the year India offers you a dazzling array of destinations and experiences. In summer, when the subcontinent is sizzling, there are spectacular retreats amidst the heady beauty of the Himalayas or the lush heights of the Western Ghats with cool trekking trails, tall peaks to conquer or stretches of white water for the adventure seekers.

sands, lush, green tea plantations, the spellbinding Taj Mahal and temples; as well as Kerala’s gorgeous beaches and backwaters, tropical rain forests, wildlife sanctuaries and colourful festivals. Here you will find nature at its most beautiful and man-made monuments at their most spectacular. India is a pot-pourri of many different cultures and beliefs, and boasts some of the world’s most famous handicrafts and exquisite hand woven fabrics. Ancient history, a maze of ancient temples, myths and legends, friendly people, piquant food, delicious sweets and a variety of spices, makes India one of the world’s most magical holiday destinations.

Climate India is so vast that the climatic conditions in the far north have little relation to that of the extreme south. While the heat is building up to breaking point on the plains, the people of Ladakh will still be waiting for the snow to melt on the high passes.

Clothing Many foreign travellers wear Indian clothes while in India. Casual light clothing is mostly suitable to India’s climate. The best-known Indian clothing is the Sari. Another popular costume is the Salwar Kameez with loose pyjama-like trousers and a long loose tunic. When travelling to any of India’s hill stations some warm clothing is recommended as the evenings can become quite cool. Credit Cards Credit cards are widely accepted in India particularly Diners Club, MasterCard, American Express and Visa. Although its usually not a problem to change travellers cheques upon production of your passport, its best to stick to the well known brands - American Express, Visa, Thomas Cook, Citibank and Barclays. Currency Rupee = 100 paisa Customs & Entry Virtually everybody needs a visa to visit India. The application is (in theory) straightforward and visas come in a variety of types from 15 days to six months.

32

resort profiles

Only six months visas are extendable. The cost of visa varies depending on your nationality and you should allow plenty of time in which to obtain it. Driving Theoretically vehicles keep to the left. In practice, most vehicles keep to the middle of the road because there are fewer potholes in the middle than on the sides. When any other vehicle is encountered the lesser vehicle should move to the side. Although vehicles can be driven with bald tires or nonexistent brakes, it is imperative that the horn should be in good working order. All in all driving is no great pleasure except in rural areas where there’s little traffic. Electrical Voltage 220 volt

Public Holidays Republic Day, Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti Day, Christmas Day, Good Friday, Buddha Jayanti Day between, Janmashtami Day, Dussera, Diwali, GuruNanak Jayanti Day. Public Transportation Road, rail and air service links all major cities, with buses and trains running regularly between many towns. Taxis There are many taxis and auto rickshaws, particularly in the towns and cities. They are metered but getting metered fare is rather a different situation. It is usually best to negotiate a price before you start.

Emergencies Police: 100; Fire: 101; ambulance: 102.

Telephone International Country Code: +91. ISD access, 00

Language Hindi and English are widely spoken.

Time Difference GMT plus 5 hours

Medical Foreign travellers to India should vaccinate against yellow fever, cholera, typhoid and polio. Malaria tablets are also recommended - check with your local doctor. A travel insurance policy to cover theft, loss and any medical problems is a wise idea.

Tipping A service charge is often included in restaurant and hotel bills. If you do wish to reward someone for good service then 10% is the normal rate.

Photography Colour print film is readily available in India and developing and printing facilities are not hard to find in most cities. They are usually cheap and the quality is usually good.

Tourist Information There are government tourist offices in most major cities and every town usually has its own tourist information centre. Water Tap water is not fit for drinking, so always use the bottled variety.

Jaipur – the fabled pink city of the desert, named after one of the greatest rulers of the Kachhawaha clan (the astronomer king Jai Singh, the former Maharaja of Jaipur) is an exotic destination for those with a keen interest in Indian culture, history and architecture; Jaipur is a jewel waiting to be explored.

royal resorts

The pink colour was used at the time of building to create the impression of the red sandstone buildings of the Mughal cities – and repainted in 1876 for the visit of the Prince of Wales. Today, every home within the city is obliged by law to maintain this façade. Houses with pink latticed windows line the streets, and look almost magical at sunset. Jaipur is surrounded by hills and dotted with forts, and is one of the links to the famed Golden Triangle of North India along with Delhi and Agra. Jaipur also serves as the most convenient entry point to Rajasthan, India’s most colourful and vibrant state. An extremely well planned city, Jaipur was designed by an engineer and scholar Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, in accordance with ancient Hindu treatise on architecture, the Shilpa Shasta. It was planned on a grid system with wide straight avenues, roads, streets and lanes and uniform rows of shops on either side of the main roads. Jaipur remains the only place where the nine sectors that sub-divide the city symbolise the nine divisions of the universe. Jaipur is surrounded by a wall having seven gates and was built for protection from invading armies

and wild animals that lurked just outside in the jungles that surrounded the city. The Old City is a wonderful place to wander around. Jaipur’s regal heritage is evident in its architecture and culture. Beautifully laid out gardens and parks, attractive monuments and marvellous heritage hotels, once the residence of Maharajas are testaments to the Rajasthan of yesteryear. The arts and crafts of the state are amazing and you will find elaborately fashioned jewellery, multicoloured ‘bandhini’ fabrics, richly decorated handlooms, and other trinkets at the colourful bazaars of Jaipur. Visiting the bazaars is a lot of fun, not just for the shopping, but also for the cheerful people in their traditional costumes. This buzzing metropolis is certainly a place of wild contrasts and a feast for the eyes. Jaipur has massive forts, magnificent palaces, exquisite temples and marvellous gardens. All throughout, Jaipur has retained its strong Rajputana flavour tempered by several influences - the mughal being the most prominent. Jaipur is an intriguing and remarkable experience.
