Cross Country, Track & Field Alumni CROSS COUNTRY TRACK & FIELD ALUMNI

Michael Brandell (Software Engineering, 2007) earned a position with Google and resides in San Francisco.

Rose-Hulman's cross country and track and field programs have a proud tradition of attracting and developing top-notch student-athletes. Although many fans remember former athletes for what they may have accomplished in the athletic realm, their efforts in the classroom were even more important. The knowledge and skills that were learned in the classroom have been combined with the teamwork and discipline involved in succeeding at cross country and track and field -- to produce outstanding alumni that Rose-Hulman is proud to call its own. Below are several of the outstanding former athletes who have been, and continue to be, a part of the Rose-Hulman family -- taking the skills they learned on campus and on the track, and putting them to use in the "real" world.

Alicia Gehlhausen Harmon (Chemical Eng., 2006) is an engineer for Millikin and Company in South Carolina.

Rachel Krasich (Biomedical Eng., 2008) has earned a Doctoral Assistantship at Duke University.

The Rose-Hulman men’s track and field program captured its third straight conference championship last spring and has emerged as one of the deepest squads in the Great Lakes Region. The women’s squad also continues to develop a tradition of its own excellence, with 35 school records set over the past five seasons. A position-by-position look at the 2011 track and field team is below: SPRINTERS & HURDLERS The sprinters and hurdlers continue to form the foundation of RoseHulman’s conference championship squad and will serve as a focal point for success again this spring. The Engineers have dominated the hurdle events over the past three years and hope to duplicate the feat again in 2011. Junior All-American Sutton Coleman returns as the most decorated hurdler in recent HCAC history. Coleman captured both the 110 and 400-meter hurdle titles in 2009 and 2010. Senior Marcus Peck returns to add significant strength and leadership in the 110-meter hurdles. Sophomores Travis Stallings and Andrew Siegle will contend for all-league honors in the 400-meter hurdles. Sophomore Michael Dickerson qualified for the HCAC finals as a freshman and looks to contend for top honors in 2011. Senior Paul Bouagnon placed second in the 400-meter dash and earned four top-five finishes in the 2010 HCAC Championships. The sprint corps will be bolstered with the return of graduate student Calvin Bueltel, along with HCAC relay champions Michael Johnson and Jake Whitsitt. Sophomore standout Josh Selig returns as a top contender in the 200 and 400-meter dashes. Bouagnon, Coleman, Johnson, Selig and Whitsitt return to defend their HCAC titles in the 4-x-100 and 4-x-400 relay events. Sophomore Gloria Boxell leads the women’s effort in the sprint and hurdle events. Boxell established a new school record in the 55-meter hurdles and qualified for the finals in the 400-meter hurdles in 2010. Sophomore Abby Sowers joins freshmen Erin Cox, Christine Moravec and Katherine Moravec in adding depth to the women’s squad. DISTANCE RUNNERS The Engineers return defending conference champions in the 1,500 meter and steeplechase events. Senior Derek Bischak returns after capturing the 1,500-meter title at the HCAC Championships in 2010. Last winter, Bischak recorded the college’s second-best all-time mark in the mile run. He ranks in the top five in school history in four events. Junior Micah Aldrich ran to the 2010 HCAC championship in the 3,000-meter steeplechase event. His time of 8:49.31 also established a new school record in the indoor 3,000-meter run last January. Senior Tyler Kreipke enjoyed one of the finest cross country seasons in Engineer history in 2010. Kreipke will contend for conference titles in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs. Senior Clark Moser returns after an injury plagued junior season and will compete in the 10,000-meter run. Junior Josh Elkins returns after placing in the HCAC 10,000 meters in 2010. Sophomores Brent Austgen and Kevin Dickson, along with freshmen standouts Michael Gerhardt and Andrew Thompson, add depth to the middle distance events. Senior Katherine Quigg earned all-conference honors in cross country and leads the distance effort for the women’s squad. Sophomore Creasy Clauser captured the HCAC title in the 800-meter run as a freshman last spring and looks to compete for all-league honors in the mile and 800 this season.

2011 Track and Field Preview JUMPERS & VAULTERS Rose-Hulman’s jumpers and vaulters were extremely successful in the 2010 HCAC championships and are expected to contribute significantly to the team score once again. Coleman looks to repeat his conference title and looks to qualify for the NCAA National Championships in the triple jump in 2011. Sophomore Travis Stallings earned important team points in the HCAC Championships in the horizontal jumping events. Senior Zach Pligge, Austgen and Siegle will add depth to the jumping events for the Engineers. The pole vaulting corps will feature returning upperclassmen Collin Crowson, Siegle and Isaac Stockrahm. The trio look for all-league honors in 2011. Sophomore Liz Evans returns after rewriting the RoseHulman history books as a freshman in 2010. Evans earned national runner-up honors in the high jump at both the indoor and outdoor NCAA championships to earn the first female AllAmerican honors in school history. Cox will provide depth in the high jump. Sophomore Tanya Colonna established school records in the indoor and outdoor pole vault and earned HCAC title honors as a freshman. Colonna recorded career-best marks of 10’ 6” outdoors and 10’ 0” indoors. THROWERS Rose-Hulman’s throwers have enjoyed a tradition of success throughout the years and 2011 should be no exception. Junior P.J. Schulthies placed third in the javelin throw at the HCAC Championships last spring. Sophomore Greg Larmore placed fifth in the discus and eighth in the hammer throw at the league meet. Freshmen Sam Kimmel and Luke Winningham will provide depth for the Engineers. The women’s squad will feature junior Aleks Kampa and sophomore Amanda Jacobson. Kampa claimed runner-up honors in the discus in 2010 and placed in three events at the HCAC meet. Jacobson returns following a sophomore academic co-op experience after earning league runner-up honors in the javelin in 2009. SCHEDULE For the first time in league history, the HCAC will contest a championship in the sport of indoor track and field. The meet will rotate between Anderson University and Rose-Hulman, with the Engineers hosting in 2012. The Rose-Hulman track and field program continues to compete against many of the finest teams throughout the Midwest. The men’s squad has annually been ranked among the top four programs in the NCAA Great Lakes Region. This year’s schedule is highlighted by trips to the Grinnell (Iowa) Indoor Invitational, the Wisconsin-Stevens Point Last Chance Meet, the Ohio Wesleyan Outdoor Invitational and the Billy Hayes Invitational at Indiana University. Rose-Hulman also continues its tradition by hosting several premier events at our nationally recognized facilities. The Engineers will host five home meets in 2011.

Cross Country Town USA Located in the heartland of America, Terre Haute, Indiana has become one of the nation’s finest sports capitals. After hosting the NCAA Division 1 cross country national championships for the sixth straight season in 2009, Terre Haute was anointed the title of Cross Country Town USA for its efforts. The city continues to host national caliber events at the NCAA Division I and Division III levels each year. Just East of the Rose-Hulman campus, the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course sits on the property of the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center. The site is a reclaimed coal mine and was the vision of former Rose-Hulman coach Bill Welch, Terre Haute entrepreneur and Rose-Hulman graduate Greg Gibson and Indiana State University head track and field and cross country coach John McNichols. LaVern Gibson donated the land for the course for the development of the facility. Indiana State and Boston Celtic basketball star Larry Bird made a donation to the facility in honor of his father, Joe Bird, and the donation was matched by Max and Greg Gibson in the name of their father and grandfather respectively. Ground was broken on the course in the summer of 1995 with the first race coming in October 1997 for the Indiana Intercollegiate meet. The course first hosted the Great Lakes Region meet in 1998 as well as in 1999, 2001 and 2003. In 2002 the NCAA deemed Lavern Gibson as the site of the Division 1 national championships and then again awarded it the meet from 2004-2010 and then 2013.

LET’S GO ROSE!

Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology has won three Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s track and field championships and added one second-place finish in four years in the league. The Fightin’ Engineers have also combined for eight Athlete of the Year awards in cross country and track & field since 2007. Members of the conference, originally formed as the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference in 1987, include Anderson University (Ind.); Bluffton (Ohio), Defiance (Ohio), Earlham (Ind.), Franklin (Ind.), Hanover (Ind.) and Manchester (Ind.) colleges; the College of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio); and Transylvania University (Ky.). Rose-Hulman chose to join a league that allowed the renewal of former rivalries, less missed class time due to athletic travel, and a reduced overall travel cost. The Engineers were a charter member of the ICAC and remained in the league from 1989-98 before heading to the SCAC. On the field, Rose-Hulman enjoyed a stellar 2009-10 year. The Engineers won the league Commissioner’s Cup for total overall performance for the second time in the last three years. Rose-Hulman repeated in winning the Men’s AllSports Trophy for the third consecutive year and four squads captured league regular season or tournament titles. The HCAC sponsors conference championships in 19 sports, including 10 for men and nine for women.
