37.5 hours/week.

Location:

The post is based at the Charity’s Head Office, Hammersmith, London, and W6. The Charity will move to a London Bridge in September 2013.

Job Purpose: In line with the substantial growth of Prostate Cancer UK, a Deputy Director has been added to most directorates to provide robust management. Specifically, the Deputy Director of Research post will ensure the day-to-day running of the Research Department is managed to a consistently high standard, enabling the Director to concentrate efforts on new areas of business, networking, nationally and internationally, and wider organisational development as part of the Charity’s Leadership Team. The Deputy will lead on the Charity’s management of its research programmes, implementation of new schemes, in particular the Movember Centre of Excellence, and long-term evaluation of our Research Programme. The Deputy will attend Board of Trustees, Executive Team and internal and external meetings in the place of the Director, as and when is necessary.

The Research Directorate has seven members of staff with an established structure of Head of Research, Research Managers and Research Officers. The Deputy will form part of the Director’s Office and will manage the Research Team through the Head of Research. 2. Organisation chart

Duties and key responsibilities          

To direct the Charity’s research programme, ensuring that the Charity funds high quality research in line with the Research Strategy. To be flexible and responsive to the needs of the research community and men with prostate cancer and their families and carers to ensure that research meets the needs of both communities. To be aware of developments in prostate cancer research internationally ensuring that the charity can respond to such developments in a timely manner. To be aware of and respond to changes in the NHS and their impact on the research environment. To build and manage the relationship between the Movember Centre of Excellence, the charity and the Movember Foundation. To direct and manage the charity’s research evaluation strategy and processes and manage the relationship between internal and external stakeholders involved in delivering a successful strategy. To ensure that the reporting systems between the Research and Finance Departments are consistently maintained to ensure accurate annual budget planning, monthly accounts and timely reforecasts. To work with the Deputy Director of Fundraising to ensure that income targets are maximised with the help of the Charity’s research portfolio To work with the Deputy Director of Communications to ensure that the Charity’s communications about research and its outcomes are timely and to a high standard To work closely with the Director of Research on new business initiatives to ensure that detailed project plans and budgets are prepared and enacted for approved projects. 2



To deputise for the Director at Board of Trustees, Executive Team and other key stakeholders as and when required.

Strategic management and planning 

To regularly monitor the delivery of the Research Strategy and prepare high quality reports and recommendations to the Executive Team and Board of Trustees.



To project manage the annual planning cycle for research with the Director of Research ensuring that detailed plans are in place within budget.



To work closely with colleagues on the Business Team to ensure that the strategic plans are aligned with the Charity’s objectives.



To think creatively about possible new approaches to ensure successful delivery of the research strategy.

Line management 

To provide effective and inspirational management and leadership, and conduct performance and development reviews of staff managed, ensuring motivated performance, high quality service delivery and achievement of the business plan.



To develop and support effective team working.

Budget management 

Monitor, evaluate and propose amendments to the plan for each funding stream based on the performance against monthly targets.



Effectively, manage the authorisation of expenditure within the Research Directorate.

 Proven track record of working in a rapidly expanding organisation, with the ability to flex their leadership style to meet the demands of a fast paced, challenging organisation in order to deliver the business goals.

 Experience of working within a scientific research Centre, or managing a research Centre from a funder’s perspective.  Experience of working in an NHS research environment. 5

 Experience of developing annual business plans and budgets.  Experience of monitoring three year business plans and budgets on a monthly basis and making adjustments to those plans. 

Experience of handling legal and regulatory matters that affect research.



Educated to at least degree level in a biomedical related subject.
