Equipment overview

The RS225A research system has been designed to integrate seamlessly within the modern research laboratory or facility, providing a solution to the problem of irradiating samples only within radiation protected and authorised areas by radiation professionals. The RS225A can be operated within a supervised “public” environment eliminating the need for laboratory and research operatives to wear personal radiation monitoring devices. The radiation leakage from the cabinet is ¹less than 20mSv in any calendar year. At this level of output radiation monitoring and recording procedures are kept to the legislated minimum, eliminating the regulatory burden and cost associated with the use and control of radioactive isotopes. The RS225A system has been designed to be contained in two separate enclosures, enabling a more flexible solution to the alternative heavy and bulky single cabinet approach. The irradiation chambers unique motorised vertical movement mechanism means that the shielded door can be opened to access samples. This eliminates the use of hinged lead doors which can add the risk of cabinet instability, topple and the additional space requirement. Touch screen technology structured on Siemens SIMATIC HMI® multifunctional platforms provides world renowned design and reliability combined with simple to use processes. Research programs can be easily written by the user and programmed into the system via the clear, helpful touch screen interface. Customer specific parameters can be programmed into the controller software, allowing repeatability of important experiments over lengthy periods, without the fear of operator error. The system is supplied with the hardware to enable Ethernet connectivity, giving online access to technical support and programming assistance, keeping downtime to a minimum.

X-ray Beam Specifications

The RS225A research system uses a metal ceramic 225kV broad focal X-ray tube to maximise the homogeneity of the X-ray beam, providing significant reduction in the “heal effect” of the tube. The assembly consists of an end grounded metal ceramic X-ray tube of advanced design with an integral high voltage receptacle and cooling system. It is enclosed in an X-ray proof housing with fittings for water hose connections. X-ray Tube Output Limits: Voltage Current Power

10 - 210 kV 1.0 mA - 25mA 3000W broad focus for designated stability

X-ray Tube Specification: Focal spot size Focal spot size Target material Inherent filtration Tube power continuous max Rating continuous max Radiation coverage total Target angle Weight

5.5 mm (largest dimension) 1.0 mm Tungsten 0.9 ± 0.1 mm Be 3000W 62kV/16.0mA 40° 20° 11.0 kg

Operating Energies The RS225A X-ray sub assembly can be fitted with an applicator holder and an in-beam filter consisting of up to 4.00 mm of materials.

The Touch Panel Operator Console

The RS225A X-ray control console is a customer selectable variant of the worldwide renowned Siemens range of MP277 HMI Panels. The configuration is touch operated and is provided with 10” LCD or TFT colour display, touch enabled. The processor architecture driving the panels is 64 bit RISC CPU, operating Microsoft Windows CE software. Beam Start up Characteristics The RS225A control console deals with all the routine elements of beam start up and beam warm up requirements. These characteristics are pre-programmed by Gulmay Medical Engineers to provide ease of use solutions for non technical operators, whilst maintaining secure and safe integrity over the operation of the x-ray dynamics of the equipment allowing reliable operation of the research system Automatic Run up procedure In order to maximise the X-ray tube life two run up procedures are programmed within the control system. The controller automatically displays the required run up procedure when the system is powered on. Short (Daily) run-up Long (Monthly) run-up

100kV to 210kV in 20minutes, with max kV running for 3 minutes 100kV to 210kV in 55 minutes, with max kV running for 3 minutes

If required, the daily run up procedure can be bypassed. The bypass mode is password protected to avoid the inadvertent circumvention of this important daily process. NB: It is recommended not to bypass the run up procedure. Operating Menus The control console incorporates several menu screens, which can be customer defined. Access to menu levels can be inhibited to allow user protected interface. Standard screens provided are:-

Start screen Help screen X-ray control screen Program screen Settings screen Diagnostic buffer screen Error buffer screen Accessories screen (defined by customer selected options)

Data Format All operations of the research control software are monitored and logged by the system. Error messages are constantly updated and may be downloaded via either the Ethernet connection or via Profibus/MPI to a remote PC. RS225ATD Page 4 of 12 Gulmay Medical Ltd. Dose Rate Stability The system continuously monitors the kV and mA actual values. If these deviate by more than ±3% the system will automatically turn off. •

Reproducibility (as IEC 601-2-8) The reproducibility of the time system for each energy is less than or equal to 1%.

Reproducibility, dependence on equipment position (as IEC 601-2-8) For any X-ray tube position the reproducibility of the time system is ± 2% or 1cGy, whichever is greater.

Linearity (as IEC 601-2-8) The linearity of time system is better than ± 1% or 1cGy whichever is greater.
