1 Initial Setup Gently connect the UTP cable between the PC/Laptop Ethernet Adaptor and the network point (there should be a small ‘click’ when inserting the UTP cable into each of these points).
2 Configure Network Settings It may be required to configure the network connection settings
2.1 Windows XP 1. Go to the Start Menu and open the Control Panel. 2. Open up Network Connection. 3. Right Click on Local Area Connection and select Properties from the dropdown menu. 4. In the General tab, highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and select properties. 5. At this point insure the following choices are selected: Obtain an IP address automatically and obtain a DNS Server automatically. 6. Click OK twice to exit and save any changes.
2.2 Windows Vista 1. Go to the Start Menu and open the Control Panel. 2. Make sure you are looking at the Control Panel in “Classic View” not “Home View”. Open up “Network and Sharing Centre”. 3. Select “Manage Network Connections” from the list on the left hand side of the screen. 4. Right Click on Local Area Connection and select Properties from the dropdown menu. 5. If a Windows permissions box appears select continue. 6. In the Local Area Connection properties windows highlight Internet Protocol Version (TCP/IPv4) and select properties. 7. At this point insure the following choices are selected: Obtain an IP address automatically and obtain a DNS Server automatically. 8. Click OK twice to exit and save any changes.

2.3 Windows 7 1. Go to the Start Menu and open the Control Panel. 2. In the search box type adapter, and then under Network and Sharing Center, click View network connections. 3. Right click on Local Area Connection and select Properties from the drop‐down menu. 4. Select the ‘networking’ tab. 5. In the ‘Local Area Connection Properties’ window that appears, highlight Internet Protocol Version (TCP/IPv4) and select properties. 6. Ensure that the following choices are selected: Obtain an IP address automatically and obtain a DNS Server automatically. 7. Click OK twice to exit and save any changes.
2.4 MAC 1. Go to the Apple Menu and click on ‘System Preferences’, then click ‘Network’. 2. Click the padlock to make changes unless it is already unlocked. 3. The active network connection will be highlighted with a green light others will be red. 4. Click ‘Advanced’ then highlight the ‘TCP/IP’ tab. 5. Set ‘Configure IPv4’ to ‘using DHCP’ and ‘configure IPv6’ to ‘Automatically’. 6. Highlight the DNS tab, grey entries are automatic ones, there should be no manual black entries. 7. When these changes are made, lock the padlock and close ‘System Preferences’. 3 | P a g e
3 Browser Configuration Adjust the user’s web browser so that it uses the Universities ‘Proxy Server’:

Go to the Tools menu and select Internet Options. Select the Connections tab in the window that appears, and make sure ‘Never dial a connection’ has been selected (this is default if no dial ups have been added). Select the LAN Settings Button. Tick the boxed marked ‘Automatically detect settings’. Click OK twice to exit and save changes.
3.2 Mozilla Firefox on any Windows system 1. Go to the Tools menu and select Options. 2. Click the Advanced icon and choose the Network tab. Then click the Settings button. 3. Select the ‘Auto detect proxy setting for this network”. 4. Click OK twice to exit and save changes
3.3 Apple Mac using OS X 1. From the Apple Menu choose System preferences, and then click the Network icon. 2. Choose Built in Ethernet, and then the Proxies section. 3. In the Select a proxy server box, choose the Automatic Proxy Configuration settings. 4. In the Proxy Configuration File URL box, type http://wpad.exeter.ac.uk/proxy.pac or if Use a Pac File option is available, select it and type http://wpad.exeter.ac.uk/proxy.pac. 5. Click Apply Now and close the window. Older versions of Mac OS don't support Proxy Auto Configuration. You can try using the manual settings, but they are not guaranteed to work. We recommend upgrading to Mac OS 10.4 or higher and use the auto configuration settings described above.

4 Recommended Antivirus install and Software Update The following are our recommendations to help students secure their computer: 1. It is strongly recommended that students using a genuine Windows OS use Microsoft Security Essentials as their antivirus software. The latest version of Microsoft Security Essentials is available, as a free download from http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/. Students using Mac OS’s running Windows should be advised to install Microsoft Security Essentials on the Windows drive. 2. Before installing Microsoft Security Essentials any antivirus software currently installed on the student machine must be uninstall. 3. Alongside antivirus software, students running Window OS should insure that it’s frequently updated with its latest releases (manually from www.microsoft.com/updates while using Internet Explorer).
