ALL SAINTS DAY

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

There have been some inquiries with regard to the vigil Mass on Saturday, November 1st due to the fact that November 1st is the Solemnity of All Saints and November 2nd is the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls). While the Solemnity of All Saints is observed on November 1st, since it falls on a Saturday the Solemnity of All Saints is not a holy day of obligation this year. Therefore, Mass times on Saturday November 1st at St. John’s will remain the same; 6:45am daily Mass and the 4:00pm Mass Saturday afternoon.

St. John the Baptist

All Souls Day

From Fr. Paul: ALL SOULS DAY; CREMATION Our theology of the resurrection has always shaped the funeral rites of the Church. We treat the body of our deceased relatives and friends with dignity and reverence, as the body was the vessel in which the soul, imbued with the grace of the Holy Spirit, dwelt. But we also “firmly believe, and hence we hope that, just as Christ is truly risen from the dead and lives forever, so after death the righteous will live forever with the risen Christ and he will raise them up on the last day” {Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) 989}. In the end times, Christ “will change our lowly body to be like his glorious body, into a spiritual body” {CCC 999} in a way that far “exceeds our imagination and understanding; it is accessible only to faith” (CCC 1000). As such we entomb our mortal remains in the grave, as Christ’s body was lovingly entombed by his mother and disciples, with the knowledge that the grave is “a sign of hope that promises resurrection even as it claims our mortal bodies (from the Funeral Rite). The early Christians, like everyone else, would normally bury their dead within twenty-four hours. They would gather in the home of the deceased and offer prayers, psalms, and songs as the body was being prepared for burial and then they would process with the body to the tomb or grave. There, more songs and prayers would be offered as the body was laid to rest and buried. For the longest time, there was within the Catholic Church a general taboo against cremation precisely because of the strong Catholic belief in the resurrection of the body. It was felt that every effort should be made to maintain the body as at the moment of death as a sign of the belief in bodily resurrection. Cremation was seen as a counter sign to this and thus was not allowed. Indeed, in the early Christian society, it was the pagans who practiced cremation, not the Christians. Yet, while there is a substantial difference between the body of the deceased and cremated remains, there is still some connection between the two. Cremation does not destroy the body completely. The ashes and bone chips that remain are something that still allow us to see the remains of someone we knew and loved. Many people today are opting for cremation rather than a full burial of their bodily remains. Some choose to do so because it is less expensive. Some simply just prefer to do so. It is often a combination of many factors. While there is still within our faith a preference for burying the entire body because of the sign value attached to belief in bodily resurrection, as long as there is no denial of bodily resurrection, the Church allows for the full rites of Christian burial for cremated remains. The family brings the cremated remains of their loved one to the church. They are greeted at the door with a prayer while the urn or box is sprinkled with holy water and all process in together. The cremated remains are to be placed in the same place as would a coffin – no distinction is to be made between the two. At the end of the Mass, the remains are carried from the church to the grave or place of entombment. An important point to note is that just as for a body, there is an expectation that the cremated remains will be buried or placed in a columbarium, a chapel designed specifically as resting place for ashes. Hopefully, this helps explain why our practice has changed over the last few years and why we still continue to do what we do.

St. John the Baptist

All Souls Day
