Volume 19 - No. 4

Remembering Jeannie Piner The world of quilting has brought me many friends. One of those friends was Jeannie Piner, who I met at a Quilt Wyoming event several years ago. Jeannie was instrumental in my pursuing another interest – teaching quilt classes. She encouraged and persuaded me to teach a class in Rock Springs, and then, after I said yes, she asked me to give a trunk show. I’m very naïve so I again said yes. As the years came and went, our friendship grew just as our quilting abilities did. Jeannie always thought out of the norm. For instance, everyone else in a class would be making a traditional animal wall hanging. Everyone else but Jeannie, that is. She would be working on her pink flowered buffalo! I loved her artistic touches she gave her quilts. Jeannie enjoyed sending and receiving greeting cards. I would get cards from her for Easter, St. Patrick’s Day, Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, etc. She kept me on my toes as I would try to get a card sent to her before I received one from her on special days. I remember Jeannie reading on her Kindle whenever we were at a retreat or quilting event. She was very knowledgeable about history. When I discovered that I was to become a Grandmother, she shared in my happiness. It was almost like she was as thrilled as I was over the birth of Emily Kay. She

August 19, 1938-May 16, 2016 never failed to ask me how everything was with Emily. I could always call and talk (maybe I should be honest and say brag) about Emily. Jeannie would patiently listen and share the emotions whether it be laughing or crying. The friendship between Jeannie and her daughter, Becky, was special too. They did so many things together and for each other. I will miss Jeannie but I feel so privileged to have shared her friendship for so many years. I’m looking forward to seeing her in our heavenly home.

♥ ♥ ♥ I must say that my life isn't as rich since my friend Jeannie died. I met Jeannie in the 70's when she was working in a doctor's office where I took my children. Jeannie and I saw one another through nursing for many years and our friendship grew through work and then quilting. Jeannie and I shared many quilting ideas and she gave me good advice through the years. Jeannie, Becky, and I were part of a group that went on retreats twice a year since the early 2000's and Jeannie's absence is felt so much as she was a major part of our group. Jeannie's meals and ideas have always been so special and added so much to our retreats. It was because of Jeannie that I became involved with the Wyoming State Quilt Guild. Jeannie always sent cards to everyone on all holidays and special events and those cards have been so missed in the last year, I think that Jeannie was as excited as I as my daughters married and then the grandchildren started to arrive. She always listened to stories about the family. I do miss our telephone calls and being able to go visit Jeannie and I am honored to have been asked to be part of the tribute to Jeannie. I know that we will meet again someday.

WSQG Elected Officers and Appointees Frances Tormey President For my first President’s note I would like to thank everyone for all their support and kind words.

I hope that everyone had as fabulous a time as I did at Quilt Wyoming 2016 in Powell! It is so nice to be a part of something that women of all ages and diverse backgrounds can gather and enjoy in unity. There was much laughter and an abundance of inspiration as we enjoyed the traveling show & tell each evening. I thought the nightly speakers were amazing. The ladies in Powell did such a phenomenal job. It was such a wonderful experience and I hope those who were unable to attend will consider coming to Gillette in 2017. Who knows what kind of “Close Encounter” will occur? Making the most out of the vast miles between Cheyenne and Powell, my caravan of eight managed to hit 13 quilt stores on our trip. It was OUTSTANDING! Definitely the best way to pass the time! I encourage you to travel and visit other regions, make new friends and catch up with old ones. The weather can cut our travel time short, so go while you can. I like to shop and visit in the summer and Quilt Quilt Quilt in the winter! Okay, I admit, I shop in the winter too. I just can’t help myself. I have a small fabric hoarding problem! I wish you all an awe-inspiring summer!

REGIONAL DIRECTORS coming up: Twister, What do I do With That Great Panel I CENTRAL Deb Zelanek I can’t believe how fast 2016 is flying by. It’s been a crazy year for me so far. I can’t believe Quilt Wyoming has come and gone and back to school supplies are already in the stores. It was great to see old friends and make new ones and to finally meet folks from the farther territories of the Central region. ‘Might have missed a few folks for the picture, but here’s most of us before we headed home.

Bought?, Stained Glass, Table Runner, Machine Quilting, and more. Contact Tammy, (307) 358-5571, for more information on any of these classes. The Sagebrush Sister ‘s meet at the shop the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Members of the group are busy working on their Christmas Challenge and Crayon Challenge (due in September). Hope to have a picture in the next issue. The Stitches N Time Quilt Guild made a quick and easy purse taught by Sonia Cottrell. Most of the ladies finished within the three hours of class time. (That’s my kind of project!) In July and August Jean Schroeder and Deanna Lindeman will lead them in making a (24” X 24”) Kaleidoscope Wall hanging. A method that has worked to help them get their projects completed during one or two group meetings is to email out the instructions for cutting ahead of the meeting so all they have to do is the piecing with the pattern and directions provided at the meeting. You will not want to miss the Never Sweat Needlers Quilt Club’s (Dubois) show August 12-14th at the Headwaters Art & Convention Center. You’ll have a chance to see up close the results of their Scavenger Hunt President’s Challenge (along with vendors and the other quilts on display). They had to make/quilt an object that included 36 (or as many as they could include) items. These ladies are so talented; you don’t want to miss seeing their work.

While everyone still has Quilt Wyoming on their mind, a reminder that we'll be having a Quilt Wyoming 2018 planning meeting at 10:00 a.m. on 27 August at Sheep Camp Quilt Supply (between Riverton & Shoshoni). See you there! We’ll all have an opportunity to get together again in September, plus hopefully more from the region will be able to come. WyoQuilt Retreat 2016 (trying to make this an annual Central event) will be held in Casper at the Ramkota Hotel & Convention Center, 16-18 September. It will be an open sew/UFO weekend (starting at 10:00 a.m. Friday and ending at 3:00 on Sunday) with a mystery class on Saturday. Watch your mail box for your invite. And if you’re not in the Central region you can still join us. Tana is the event’s point of contact and can be reached at (307) 267-9875 or by email at [email protected]. My apologies to Torrington and Sheep Camp for the conflicting dates, there were no other dates available. We will switch weekends next year. A registration form is available on page nine and on the events page under Quilters Resources at www.wsqg.org. One of these days I’m going to have to make it over to Douglas. If you’re looking for something to do these ladies are busy. The Prairie Stitcher has several great classes

Wyoming Star Quilt Guild Closer to home the Wyoming Star Quilt Guild in Riverton completed their yearly challenge and had everyone seeing spots (challenge fabric was orange with white dots). All entries were lovely. Top honors went to Floye Weekly (1st), Delores Warfield (2nd), and Maryanne Robinson and Barb David tied Central Continued on Page 9…

REGIONAL DIRECTORS …Central Continued from Page 7 for 3rd. A joint meeting with the Popo Agie Quilters (Lander) was held in Hudson, June 27th. Lots of fun was had getting to see all the quilts made by the two groups. I’ve started to do some shop hopping and am enjoying collecting all the cute blocks. Stopped at Sheep Camp Quilt Supply (Riverton/ Shoshoni) and couldn’t resist buying the Row by Row kit with all the darling sheep. I haven’t done appliqué yet and couldn’t imagine cutting out all the tiny legs but the laser cut appliqués will hopefully make my first attempt successful. The shop looks bright with the new shelves they’ve installed to display all the rainbow colored Kona solids. They’ll be holding mini wool workshops once a month on the 1st Wednesday of the month, 1-4 pm. Starting in August. The 3rd annual Owl Creek Quilt Retreat (Shoshoni) will be held September 17 & 18. This year the teacher will be Louisa Smith of Quilt Escapes LLC. The class project will be anything from the "Strips and Curves" book. A Trunk Show will be held on Friday evening prior to the class beginning. Contact Stephanie, (307) 856-1468, for more information. ‘Stopped in at Blakeman’s Sew & Vac on an impromptu trip to Casper and found the mini piping foot I was looking for. They have a couple of regular groups meeting there; a Quilts of Valor group meets every Wednesday from 2:30-5:00 and a Machine Embroidery Club meets the 3rd Saturday of every month. For both groups you can bring your own machine or use one at the store. Call (307) 234-4581 for more info. Also they let me know about a new fabric store that just opened, Cotton Tales, but unfortunately I don’t have all the details yet except that it’s next to Hobby Lobby. Of course I had to shop hop while I was in Casper and picked up shop hop and Row By Row patterns from Prism Quilt & Sew and Kalico Kat Quilt Shop. The folks who come in to sew at Kalico Kat are enjoying their 2nd year of the 3D program, an idea Sandie got from the internet that other groups might want to try. The 3D’s are: dig it out, dust it off, do it up. For this club there is a $25.00 fee to join which goes for prizes. Everyone digs out 12 projects, writes them down, numbering them 1 -12, giving them a name. Each month, they work on the project number that was drawn the month before. The numbers are put in a bag, and every month a number is drawn for the next project to complete, so they are not doing them in the order they were numbered. For each project completed, (not quilted and bound), their name is put in for a drawing. Lots of folks are getting their UFO’s done and it’s really fun to see how old (years!) some of their projects are… In addition to the 3Ds, they’re starting to work on the High School quilts again. The goal is again about 25 this year. September 30th to October 2nd they’ll be working on the Hoffman kit “Crystal Blue” (pre-cut and no paper

piecing). Give Sandie, (307)237-8458/259-3914, a call for more information. If your year hasn’t been busy (ha ha), hopefully the above has given you some options on how to fill your time if you’re looking for a new quilting project or class. If you’re a member of a quilt group or know of a quilt/fabric shop that is not listed on the WSQG website (Quilter’s Resources tab) please let me know so I can get it updated. As always let me know if there is anything I can do for you or your group.

Valuing Quilts: How to Help Your Quilt

Live to 100 – Part 13 – Barb Gorges Have your quilt professionally appraised. Attaching monetary value to it may help keep it in better condition over the years. After all, if the next owner of the quilt (your friend or relation) has a copy of the appraisal in hand, they might decide their dog will enjoy sleeping on a $30 store-bought comforter just as much as a handmade quilt valued at $1000. There are different kinds of appraisals. The one most quilters want is replacement value, the value you give to your home owner’s insurance company or when shipping the quilt. It is not figured the same way as market value.

The American Quilter’s Society’s certified quilt appraisers have the best credibility should you have to put in an insurance claim. While there are none in Wyoming, there are several in surrounding states or you may be able to make appointments with them at quilting events. See http://www.americanquilter.com/ under “Resources.” The cost of a quilt appraisal can be $50—about the same as four yards of batik. But if you have ever lost a quilt, you know how small a price that is. The first 12 parts of this series are available on my web site www.GorgesQuiltLabels.com.

This American Quilter’s Society If the quilt’s pattern is appraisal is filed in a safe place with a popular, made from a photo of the quilt. SOUTHWEST Debbie Wolfe At the time of this writing in early July, I reflect back upon my experience these past four years as your Southwest Regional Director, this being my last report . I could just write: It was fun, thanks for the experience, time to move on, and your new director is Virginia Hartman. She will be great; please give her your support.

The 5th Annual Hunters Widow Retreat in Rock Springs will be October 7-8

Quilt Guilds: Star Valley quilters are in full swing for the summer and will taper off in the fall as the snow birds move to warmer climate for the winter. The Sweetwater Piecemakers in Rock Springs had a “quilt item” swap meet in June. July’s meeting will be their annual ice cream social. Members continue to “bag” and donate their scraps that will be used to stuff dog beds for the animal shelter in the fall. New SW Regional Director: At the annual WSQG meeting in Powell on July 17th, Ginny Hartman of Kemmerer was voted in as the new SW Regional Director. Congratulations Ginny!

However, a few of you that know me well would read through this and know that in my heart I carry much gratitude and appreciation for all of the support and wisdom bestowed upon me during my term. I had a lot to learn; you taught me; WE did a good job! Thank you! In picking out an inspirational quote from a pack of 36 Inspired Creativity Cards for my last report, I realized that many of the cards sum up my experience as Director and what I have learned from many of you ladies. For fun, here are some favorites. Challenge: Make yourself work in a format you haven’t tried before or don’t feel comfortable with. You might just find that it’s your new best “tool.” - Alex Anderson Reach Out: Quilt with a friend or better yet, a whole group of friends. – Wendy Mathson Take a Dare: Give yourself a deadline. Enter a contest or challenge. Sign up for a show. If you don’t have a ready-made challenge, make one up. Claudia Clark Myers Have Fun: Take a no-rules approach and just play with your fabric. – Lesly Riley Wisdom: Look at your mistakes as “design opportunities” that force you to experiment and grow. – Mary Stori Be Surprised: Give it time. Ideas are germinating below the surface even when nothing seems to be happening. All of a sudden, several will sprout at once! - Rayna Gillman -----------Upcoming quilting events in the SW Region: (see the “Quilt Events” page for details) · The 2nd Annual Quilting in the Winds in Pinedale will be October 20-23

Valeria: LOIS WRAGGE'S RESCUE QUILT One day while checking her neighborhood trash bins for a suitable box, Lois discovered a treasure. Lying on top of other discarded items was an avocado and white drunkard's path quilt. On examination Lois found that this one was a hand pieced, hand quilted no batting summer quilt. While the binding was worn, the rest of the quilt was in remarkably good condition. The piecing is exact and the hand quilting is exquisite. Lois found a compatible fabric and replaced the binding. A quilt that could have been lost in the land fill has been rescued and is on the path to preservation. We are fortunate to have Lois in the Wyoming State Quilt Guild with her creative vision and knowledge of the value of what she sees. This story reminds me of the importance of keeping our quilting heritage of hand piecing and hand quilting alive for ourselves and future generations of quilters. With the availability of beautiful fabrics we do not have to wait to collect scraps for quilt piecing. With our modern sewing machines for piecing and quilting we do not need the patience and dedication that our grandmothers practiced when making quilts. I believe we need the modern techniques and products for our quilt making as well as the legacy of the quilters who came before us. Rotary cutting and electric cutting systems are definitely time saving and provide accuracy, but tracing cardboard templates and scissor cutting still have a place. Machine piecing and quilting make it possible to complete quilts much more quickly. Hand piecing and hand quilting can give the quilt maker much needed quiet time for reflection as well as a deep personal connection to the quilt. I have finished my mother's quilt and while it was not made of a fabric or pattern that I would have chosen and I would have been more exact with points, corners and seams, it is a quilt that in its finished form honors another quilter's vision.

TONGUE RIVER QUILTERS The quilters from Dayton and Ranchester have been meeting for a number of years. They get together informally on Saturdays as early as 9:00 am at the Ranchester Town Hall. The gals work on their own projects and make quilts for the Welch Cancer Center in Sheridan. The quilters accept donations for fabric and other supplies and turn these around for more quilts. The quilts are based on six-inch squares and are generally 48 by 66 inches. The group has varied in size from six or seven quilters up to as many as twenty depending on interest and schedules. The Tongue River Quilters also sponsor a spring retreat at Bear Lodge in the Big Horn Mountains at Burgess Junction. COUNTY FAIR TIME When this issue of Patchwords comes out, county fairs will be winding down, in full swing, or just starting. If you happen to be in the vicinity of one of these fairs please make it a priority to check them out. Whether you find 4-H lambs, jellies, quilts or something else you are likely to see a project that will inspire you. Campbell County Crook County Johnson County Sheridan County Weston County

The Creative Fiber Guild of Sheridan members take turns sitting in the hall to monitor the visitors to the Sheridan County Open Class exhibits. I will be there Friday, August 5 from 3:00 until 6:00 pm and I would love to see you.

Sherryl: As I begin writing this communication to you, I am looking forward to a relatively quiet Fourth of July. By the time you read it, it will be nearly Lammas (Festival of the Wheat Harvest in the Old World, August 1) and marker of the halfway point between the Spring Solstice (June 21) and the Autumn Equinox (September 22), all of which means our daylight hours are slowly diminishing. Not trying to be a downer here, but trying to remember the cycle of the seasons, and I look forward to when I will be doing more quilting and so on. There is a seasonality to my crafting. Is this true for you too? In the spring I can hardly wait to get out and pull out weeds and trash from around my perennial plantings. I start working the ground for the garden and beds. By early May, it is branding season, which means cooking and joining in the festivities/work associated with those tasks and starting to plant things. In June, it is the hard slog through the weeds and hoping the garden will do okay. Normally in July it is haying season, and of course Quilt Wyoming and Sheridan Rodeo in the midst. Irrigation normally starts somewhere around the end of June for me, and continues until shortly after the second cutting in the alfalfa field. This year the haying and irrigation started in June, and thus very little sewing of any sort has been completed at this point since I last wrote to you. Soon it will be time to help the Northeast Continued on Page 17…

REGIONAL DIRECTORS …Northeast Continued from Page 15 neighbor sort out market lambs and get them shipped, and then hopefully get some harvest from the garden. This is what brought to mind Lammas, and then the saying “That does not grow corn for me.” I first heard that at a retreat in Michigan many years ago. It took a while for me to understand it. I repeat it to myself as I sorted through my rulers and templates to prepare for Quilt Wyoming. Some of those tools do not grow corn for me. I either don’t like the tool (some are just not intuitive) or I’ve decided I don’t like the finished product from using the tool. But I have learned over the last few years that just because it is not working for me right now, it may yet work for me in the future. I can set it aside, and return another time. That is part of my quilting journey. Learning about color and value, learning about what tools work for me or solve a particular problem, learning what shapes and patterns resonate with my psyche, and learning to put it all together. I hope that you who were able to attend classes and retreats this season learned some things. I hope that you don’t just discard the things that don’t resonate for you. They may yet be helpful as the journey continues. The Sheridan based QOV group is busily putting together an opportunity quilt to help publicize the process for requesting

and receiving a QOV, as well as to raise some funds to buy backings and batting. This will be a scrappy Log Cabin Star quilt, about 100 in x 100 in. They hope to start showing the quilt and selling tickets at the Third Thursday event in Sheridan in July. They’ve had a number of new requests for quilts. Janet Ludwig and Pinewood Cottage were featured in The Quilt Sampler, spring and summer issue. Hurray for Janet and Pinewood Cottage! Vikki Chenette assembled and quilted a comfort quilt for Janet Ludwig from blocks made by local quilters. There was an Open Sew Event in Gillette on June 22 where you could also swap fabric and quilting related items. These folks are working hard to raise funds for and to plan and execute the Northeast Wyoming Quilt Show on October 1 and 2. ‘Hope you are planning to come and see the quilts, and maybe take one of the half-day classes they are offering this year during the show.

REGIONAL DIRECTORS NORTHWEST Marylou Doyle I hope everyone got home from Camp Quilt-A-Lot safely with new friendships made and lots of new ideas in your head. The Northwest District enjoyed putting it on for you. I hope you got a lot of Shop Hopping done along the way. I haven’t gotten serious yet. So far I only have the shops that I accidently passed by. Each year my husband takes me on two trips so I can get to them all. One is just an overnight trip, while the other one takes two nights. He has it down to a Science. Maybe that is because he was a Science teacher! He makes an agenda ahead of time that lists the town and time of each stop. Needless-to-say, I don’t get to spend too long in each place! Each year we have a goal in mind in an effort to learn more about Wyoming, of which we are both natives. It is amazing what we have learned. We have checked out the geology, roadside points of interest, and State Parks. On facebook recently there have been many lists of the top ten (or more) interesting things around the state. The one that first interested us was the list of top restaurants. We will see how many of these we can hit. Another was, “Destinations Everyone in Wyoming Needs to Visit This Summer.” Maybe next year we can work on the “Nine unbelievable Waterfalls” or “Tunnels in Wyoming”.

The challenge this year is that you must have a snowman in it somewhere. Park County also has Quilt Show at their Fair. If you have not yet visited the quilt show that the “Textile Artists of the Greater Yellowstone” have on exhibit at the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation, which is better known at the Japanese Internment camp, it is not too late. The exhibit is called “1942 Heart Mountain, Wyoming, Executive Order 9066” and includes 22 quilts with the special addition of a quilt made by Ms Ito, an internee of the camp. It is well worth your drive from anywhere to see it. It is located at 1539 Road 19, just off the Highway between Powell and Cody, and is well marked. You could stop while on your Shop Hop!! It will be there until the end of August.

This time of year reminds me of the song about floating down a lazy river. Everyone is taking it easy and enjoying the summer activities of gardening, lawn work, vacations, weddings, etc. The Pin Droppers of Lovell report that their Guild continues to do a modern “Block of the Month” with Linda McDonald of Cody. Members are working on honor quilts for their regional veterans. Thermopolis’s Wild West Quilt Guild are on summer break, but not before they had their block exchange with a get together of wonderful munching on the finger foods that everyone brought along with quilting discussions. Each revealed what others had made for them. Everyone was excited and pleased. Another reveal will be held in the Fall as not all were able to attend. This time it will be blocks, a ufo, or a finished quilt. As nice as it is this summer, I am guessing ufo’s will be the most common. Loose Threads of Basin/Greybull are busy finishing up their work to be ready for the County Fair Quilt Show.

We are proud of Jan Barnett, who belongs to Loose Threads. She entered her quilt, “Festival of Trees” in the HMQS Show in Salt Lake in May, and won second place. There were 250 quilts judged and a total of 900 quilts hanging in the show. Her quilt is wool, hand appliqued and machine quilted. It was not a kit but was from the book “Juniper and Mistletoe” by Karla Menaugh and Barbara Brachman.
