Release Purpose Dell SonicWALL Content Filtering Client service provides protection and productivity policy enforcement for businesses, schools, libraries and government agencies. Organizations can use filtering policies on their gateway firewall to control web surfing behavior and content when the browsing is initiated within the perimeter of the firewall. But when the same client device exits the perimeter, the control is lost. The Dell SonicWALL Content Filtering Client service addresses this gap by blocking objectionable and unproductive web content even when the client machine is outside the firewall perimeter. Dell SonicWALL firewalls working in conjunction with Dell SonicWALL Content Filtering Client ensure that all client machines have the latest software updates for filtering web content accessed from any location. The client is designed to work with both Windows and Mac OS. The three main components of the Dell SonicWALL Content Filtering Client solution are:

SonicOS — A Dell SonicWALL security appliance running SonicOS facilitates licensing of the Content Filtering Client service and provides a way to enable or disable enforcement and to configure exclusions and other settings.

Client Software — Any computer attempting to access the Internet through the Dell SonicWALL security appliance is blocked from accessing web sites until the Content Filtering Client is installed. Client software installation is initiated automatically once the user clicks to agree.

Content Filtering Client Policy & Reporting Admin Tool — The cloud-based Content Filtering Client Policy & Reporting Admin provides administration of client policies and client groups. The administrator can access it from MySonicWALL or from SonicOS on the appliance.

Content Filtering Client Objectionable content is still blocked by the Dell SonicWALL Content Filtering Client software even when the client machine accesses the Internet using a connection outside the Dell SonicWALL appliance (at home vs. at the school, for example). If a user takes a laptop home, he or she is still protected.

Dynamically Updated Rating The Content Filtering Client solution receives dynamically updated web site ratings in real time that are crossreferenced against a highly accurate database categorizing millions of URLs, IP addresses and domains. The Dell SonicWALL firewall has a dynamic rating engine in the WebCFS server that is responsible for replying to all the rating requests from the client. The appliance will then either allow or deny the web page request, based on the administrator’s locally configured policy.

IP-based HTTPS Content Filtering IP-based HTTPS content filtering controls user access to web sites over encrypted HTTPS. HTTPS filtering is based on the categorical rating of web site types, such as gambling, pornography, online banking, online brokerage and trading, shopping, and hacking/proxy avoidance.

Filtering by Schedule Filtering can be scheduled by time of day, such as during school or business hours. You can set multiple schedules and apply the schedules to various user groups.

High-performance Web Caching and Rating Architecture High-performance web caching and rating architecture allows administrators to block sites easily and automatically by category. URL ratings are cached locally in the Dell SonicWALL Content Filtering Client, so that response time for subsequent access of frequently visited sites is only a fraction of a second.

Web Based Management Easy-to-use web-based management using the Content Filtering Client Policy & Reporting Admin tool enables flexible policy configuration and complete control over Internet usage. Administrators can add, delete, or modify multiple custom policies for individual users, groups or specific category types.

Customizable Message to Display when Blocking Administrators can either use the default Web page to display when blocking web content or create their own custom web site that is displayed when a web page is blocked.
