Application Gateway Release Notes

Changes in this Release

The Nortel Application Gateway 2000 delivers business applications to Internet-enabled IP telephones. It is an open, standards-based network platform that supports simultaneous voice and data services. The Application Gateway is designed to reside virtually anywhere in the enterprise network. IP telephones access the Application Gateway for applications. The Application Gateway delivers the Voice Office Application Suite to Nortel IP phones.

Changes in this Release Application Gateway Release 6.3.2 now uses a Postgres SQL database instead of MySQL. In addition, several issues have been fixed, as described in “Issues Fixed in this Release,” page 16.

Upgrading from Release 6.3.1 to 6.3.2 Use the following procedure to upgrade from release 6.3.1 to release 6.3.2. If you need to re-image the Application Gateway, you must use the ISO file on the Nortel support site (6.3.1_GA.iso). Refer to the Application Gateway Release Notes for 6.3.1 for information. To upgrade the Application Gateway: Note

1

When you upload a server upgrade, the Application Gateway drops the active sessions, so it is best to upgrade the server when you know that traffic is at a minimum.

Voice Office Application Suite Overview

Voice Office Application Suite Overview The Application Gateway provides Voice Office Application Suite capabilities for users of Nortel Communication Server 1000 systems. The Voice Office Application Suite enables enterprises to leverage their IP telephony investments and increase workforce productivity by delivering converged applications to the screens and speakers of Nortel IP phones. Voice Office applications include: Access Services enables a site to deliver custom Web-based applications to the IP Phone 2007 screen. Broadcast Server delivers alerts such as emergency, IT, and weather broadcasts in the form of text and audio messages to IP phones. Express Directory provides an LDAP-based, organization-wide directory with high speed, real time pruning. Zone Paging enables users to page through groups of IP phones in specific zones without the expense of installing an overhead paging system.

Advantages of Using GXAS Phones with the Application Gateway It is recommended that you use GXAS phones with the Application Gateway to benefit from the following advantages over XAS phones: •

GXAS phones have a higher capacity for paging and alerts, as described in “Application Gateway Capacity,” page 2.

GXAS phones have a graphical interface which improves the usability and appearance of voice applications.

GXAS phones can be configured (through the Application Gateway GXAS Foreground Timer setting) so that the Voice Office menu automatically opens after TPS has displayed for a specified number of seconds.

IP Phones 2007 used in GXAS mode can be run in secured mode (for TLS-secured communications with the Application Gateway) and can be configured so that voice applications use the entire screen.

Application Gateway Capacity The following capacity figures assume normal usage patterns and that the host network can handle the traffic. For larger installations, pre-testing is required to ensure that the network capacity is adequate and to determine the required number of Application Gateways.

Voice Office Application Suite Overview

Application Gateway 2000 Capacity Guidelines •

Provides Voice Office features to up to 1000 IP phones (a maximum of 500 of those phones can be GXAS).

Provides Voice Office features to up to 4000 IP phones when up to four Application Gateways are clustered. (Each Application Gateway supports a maximum of 500 GXAS phones.)

Supports simultaneous paging to up to 500 GXAS IP phones per Application Gateway and across a cluster.

Supports simultaneous paging to up to 120 XAS IP phones and up to 380 GXAS phones per Application Gateway and across a cluster.

Supports sending a broadcast alert to up to 100 XAS IP phones or 500 GXAS IP phones per Application Gateway or across a cluster.

Provides Guest Services features to at least 500 Nortel IP Phone 2007 sets (additional testing is required to determine upper limit).

Other Capacity Guidelines

Note

An Application Gateway supports a maximum of 256 broadcast zones.

An Application Gateway supports 32 concurrent buffered audio streams for broadcast alerts. When an attempt to open a 33rd buffered audio stream occurs, the phone user will see an audio unavailable error message.

An alert sent from Broadcast Server occupies one buffered audio stream per Application Gateway, regardless of the size of the distribution list.

Zone pages do not require audio to be buffered and are therefore not subject to the limitation of 32 simultaneous buffered audio streams.

For a list of the Nortel software requirements, please refer to the Application Gateway Pre-Installation Checklist for Nortel Communication Server.

Important Security Information

Important Security Information Improper configuration of the Application Gateway can result in a security risk. Before you deploy the Application Gateway, verify that it does not have access to protected intranet sites. Be aware of the following security considerations: •

Protected servers Do not put the Application Gateway on the same subnet as protected servers if the Application Gateway is configured to proxy all web pages. As a result, the Application Gateway will provide access to computers on the same subnet as the web servers that are configured to work with the Application Gateway. For example, suppose an Application Gateway has an external IP address of 24.221.1.1 and an internal IP address of 192.168.1.31. On the same subnet, you have an intranet server protected from outside access, with an IP address of 192.168.1.20. You can access all ports on the protected intranet server through the Application Gateway by using this URL: http://24.221.1.1/http://192.168.1.20.

IP phone/Application Gateway connection We recommend that you locate the connection between an IP phone and the Application Gateway behind a firewall.

Network and Configuration Requirements Customer Network Quality Level To ensure a high level of performance, we recommend that the customer network maintain a minimum quality level as follows:

4

Release Notes

Less than 100 ms delay

Less than 20 ms of jitter

Less than 0.5% packet loss

Network and Configuration Requirements

Minimum Requirements for IP Phones Application Gateway operation requires the following Nortel software releases, or greater. See the Pre-Installation Checklist for firmware release requirements and a table of the applications available for each supported phone. • Note

Communication Server 1000, release 4.0, 4.5, or 5.0.

When upgrading firmware on IP phones or making other large-scale changes (such as DHCP updates), make the changes in segments. Restarting all IP phones at the same time causes a sudden spike in load and can disrupt Application Gateway operations.

Requirements to Change Supported Audio File Length Note

This information applies to Broadcast Server run on Windows 2003 Server only. For Broadcast Server run on Windows XP, no changes need to be made. By default, audio media that is broadcast to phones is limited to 16 seconds. Some sites might want to increase the supported play time so that Broadcast Server users can record messages for broadcast. You increase the supported play time by changing the value of the "ASPMaxRequestEntityAllowed" field in metabase.xml, as described in the following procedure. When an audio file is larger than the supported play time, the following error appears during the upload: Form.Init() error '80040200' Input type was not expected. To resolve that error, you either need to increase the "ASPMaxRequestEntityAllowed" value or resample the media to something smaller. To change the audio media broadcast limit (for Windows 2003 Server)

1

Stop the World Wide Web Publishing Service: Go to Start > Administrative Tools > Services stop the service "World Wide Web Publishing Service".

2

Stop the IIS Admin Service: In the same services screen, stop the "IIS Admin Service".

3

Go to C:\windows\system32\inetsvr\ and edit the file named metabase.xml.

5

Deployment and Operation Notes

4

Change the value of the "ASPMaxRequestEntityAllowed" field. It is set to a default of 204800. We recommend a value of 614400 which allows you to upload and play a wav file of approximately 60 seconds (based on an audio clip with these settings: PCM format, 8 KHz sampling rate, with 8 bits per second). Note: It is always better to keep this value as low as possible.

5

Restart the services that were stopped.

Deployment and Operation Notes Licensing of IP Phones You must have a license for each IP Phone that is to use Voice Office applications. Licenses are not specific to the phone model.

General •

Nortel Business Communication Manager (BCM) is not currently supported for use with the Application Gateway.

Broadcast Server is not supported for Nortel Virtual Office.

The Application Gateway does not support multiple appearance DNs, that is, more than one phone with the same primary DN. If more than one phone has the same primary extension, only one of those phones, the one most recently registered with the Application Gateway, will receive a page or broadcast. Workaround: Assign a unique primary DN to each phone and use the secondary extension for assigning multiple sets the same DN. For example, if you have two phones with primary extension 100, change the primary extension of one of those phones to a unique number and also assign that phone a secondary extension of 100.

6

Release Notes

(653) The Volume key does not work in XAS mode.

(757) Express Directory is the only Voice Office application that can be used with phones that are behind a Network Address Translation (NAT) device.

When a phone is powered off and back on, it is in a busy state for two minutes. When a phone rings but is not answered, the phone remains in a busy state for 30 seconds after the phone stops ringing. While a phone is in a busy state, phone users will see the message “Waiting on Audio” and will need to wait until a phone is no longer busy to use most Voice Office application functions.

Deployment and Operation Notes

(2033) On Nortel IP Phones 1120E and 1140E (GXAS), it is not possible to adjust the audio volume while the phone has a session with the Application Gateway.

(2038) On Nortel IP Phones 1120E and 1140E (XAS), pressing the Service key to access the Voice Office menu temporarily stops one of the ring tones so that the ringing sounds clipped.

When Using a Call Server for IP/DN Mapping Note

These issues do not apply if the Application Gateway is configured to obtain IP/DN information directly from the Nortel IP Phones. •

You must use a CSV file for IP/DN mapping if using Nortel Automatic Call Distribution (ACD).

To support the creation of an IP/DN map, the Application Gateway must be able to ssh into the signaling server and access ld 117 on the call server.

(517) For Nortel Communication Server, the information for the IP/DN map can be obtained from the signaling and call servers. For sites using Communication Server 1000, releases 4.0, 4.5, 5.0 or 5.5, you configure a connection between the Application Gateway and one signaling server, which provides the Application Gateway with information from all connected call servers. The AG2000 does not support a backup signaling server connection. If communication with the primary signaling server fails or the signaling server is taken offline, the Application Gateway operation may be impacted until the Application Gateway can resynchronize with the signaling server.

When the Application Gateway synchronizes with other servers to obtain information such as phone DN and IP address, an extension might be temporarily unable to access a Voice Office application or might lose its session with the Application Gateway. Completion of a synchronization resolves those transient issues.

If a page is in progress when a synchronization completes, the page is terminated.

(353) If the Application Gateway is unaware of a phone’s DN and the phone attempts to access the Application Gateway, the phone will not be included in the available extensions list on Operation > Voice Office > Zone Paging after a synchronization with the signaling server. Workaround: Reboot the Application Gateway to refresh the available extensions list.

Deployment and Operation Notes

Zone Paging •

(690) If a phone user takes the phone off-hook and then presses the Release button, the phone will not receive pages. The phone must be on-hook to receive pages.

(738) When an IP Phone 2007 that is receiving a page is called from a phone that is on the same or a different node, pressing the line key to answer the call sometimes results in a one-way speech path. Workaround: Put the call on hold and then press the line key to re-establish a two-way speech path.

(802) On Nortel IP Phones 2007, 1120E, and 1140E (GXAS), if you try to page from the handset before turning on the microphone, the page will not go through.

(1594) If the speaker is engaged by pressing the Speaker key, you cannot initiate a page. Workaround: Either page from the handset or choose the speaker from the soft key after you initiate the page.

(1850, 740) On Nortel phones, a page cannot be initiated if the phone is on a call (because the audio is unavailable).

Note

If you place an XAS phone on hold, you can go to the Voice Office menu and initiate a page. (If you place a GXAS phone on hold, you currently cannot page.) If someone else places you on hold (so the phone is parked), you will not receive pages.

(2040) On IP Phones 1120E and 1140E (XAS), the speech path is clipped and/or delayed at the beginning of a page that is initiated through the handset.

(4042) For firmware releases lower than UNIStim 3.0: When the Open Mic prompt times out (after 30 seconds of idle time), the prompt continues to display and the sender’s speaker remains on, even after the sender clicks the End soft key. Workaround: If 30 seconds of idle time elapse while the Open Mic prompt is displayed, click the Cancel soft key in that prompt, click End, click Return, and then click Exit to turn off the speaker.

Nested zones are not yet supported.

Deployment and Operation Notes

Broadcast Server •

The IP Phone 2002 does not display pushed title lines.

(451) After an alert is broadcast to an IP Phone 2001, the user must press the Line key twice to obtain a dial tone.

(1875) Nortel IP Phones 2007, 1120E, and 1140E (GXAS) do not play the audio tone sent with emergency alerts.

(2310) Alerts that remain on the screen without expiring will continue to accumulate on phones in GXAS mode. If a heavy volume of long-lived alerts is delivered, the capacity of the Application Gateway will be impacted. Please be sure that the number of current (non-expired) alerts is kept to a reasonable level.

For Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0, IIS hangs when Broadcast Server attempts to upload a large .wav file. This error is due to the lack of a defined limit on the Windows 2000 IIS 5.0 server, which does not terminate properly when the limit is exceeded. Workaround: Microsoft recommends an upgrade to Windows 2003 IIS 6.0 server to resolve this issue. Alternatively, downsample the audio file to reduce its file size.

For IIS 6.0, Broadcast Server displays the following error when attempting to upload a large .wav file in Broadcast Server: Form.Init() error '80040200' Input type was not expected /BCS/media_form_save.asp, line 66 This error is due to the default file size limitation of 200KB on the Windows 2003 IIS 6.0 server. Workaround: Downsample the audio file to reduce its file size. Alternatively, you can change the default file size limitation for IIS. Open C:\Windows\System32\Inetsrv\metabase.XML and change the value for AspMaxRequestEntityAllowed. The maximum size that you set will vary depending on the amount of memory in the system and the other applications running.

(2752) When you create a Broadcast Server alert, you must select the appropriate Alert Text or Alert Graphic option. Otherwise, the text or graphic might not be sent to the phones.

(3527) When using a mouse device with an IP Phone 1120E/1140E to select a URL link displayed in a broadcast message, you cannot enter or select text in the Web page.

Known Issues

Known Issues Voice Office Application Suite •

(701) If a phone is unable to reach the Application Gateway and also displays the results of Voice Office activity performed on another phone, restart the Application Gateway.

(760) If a Nortel IP telephone user hangs up the handset when viewing the Express Directory list, the telephone exits from the voice office application and returns to the main Nortel display. Workaround: Press the feature key to return to the Voice Office application.

(3841) The behavior of an Exit soft key added to the Voice Office Menu differs for GXAS and XAS modes. For GXAS, the Exit soft key always returns the user to the telephony system, even if a URL is specified. For XAS, the Exit soft key always leads to the specified URL, even if no URL is specified.

(5717) A Nortel IP Phone 1120E using XAS does not fully display the message “Application Menu not Configured” when that menu is not configured and you select Application Menu from the Voice Office menu.

(5739) After you click the Submit button in the administration tool, you must wait 30 seconds before paging an XAS phone (so the phones have a chance to re-connect to the Application Gateway).

(511) Broadcast Server does not correctly reflect the automatically created distribution lists after a synchronization with the Application Gateway. Only one of the distribution lists will include subscribers and all other distribution lists will be empty. Some distribution lists will be duplicated.

(761) If a message is pushed to an IP phone while another pushed message is playing, the second message overwrites the first message.

(827) Broadcasts and pages are not logged, therefore it is not possible to determine from the log when a push was made and which devices did not receive it.

(1185) During installation of Broadcast Server on the European versions of Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4 or Windows 2003 Server, the following error appears:

Broadcast Server

Release Notes

Known Issues

“Error 1931. The Windows Installer Service cannot update the system file e:\winnt\system32\msxml3r.dll because the file is protected by Windows. You may need to update your operating system for this program to work correctly. “ That error does not impact Broadcast Server operation. Press OK and the installation will continue. •

(1667) Broadcast Server does not support special characters in the name of uploaded audio or graphics files. Workaround: Do not use special characters in the filenames of audio and graphics files.

(2143) Each phone appears twice in the Broadcast Server subscriber list. This is a display issue only.

(2237) Broadcast Server displays an error message if you attempt to search for a user name or subscriber name that contains the single quote (') character. Workaround: Remove the ' character from the search string.

(2303) Alerts sometimes are not removed from the alerts list.

(2461) Broadcast Server does not use space characters entered at the beginning or end of a user name or password entered anywhere in the application.

(2467) If you change a user account so that it no longer has permission to send alerts to a shared distribution list, any alert that the user attempts to send results in the message “Error on Page”. Workaround: Use the Edit User Permissions page to remove all distribution lists from the user. Then, use that same page to re-add the desired lists.

(2641) If you change the IP Phone UI Language menu on the Operation > General page of the Administration Tool, members are cleared from Broadcast Server distribution lists. Workaround: Be sure to configure the IP Phone UI Language before creating distribution lists.

(3221) If two alerts are sent at the same time, the first alert is sent several times and the second alert is never sent.

(4034) Nortel IP Phones 2002 and 2004 display line breaks (created by pressing Enter when typing a message to be broadcast), in the encoded form: .

(4214) If more than 3000 phones are subscribed to Broadcast Server, the Edit Recipient display is not formatted correctly.

Release Notes

11

Known Issues

(5694) The IP Phone 2007 has a delay of a few seconds in displaying the URL and Dial buttons when it is sent a background alert that includes those features.

(5734) Broadcast Server will not create a distribution list if a LDAP/CSV directory entry contains special characters in any field.

Express Directory •

(1567) Telephone number attributes do not display if the combined length of the Telephone Label field and the telephone number exceed 23 characters. Workaround: If your directory includes long phone numbers, such as international phone numbers with access codes, be sure to use short Telephone Labels, or just omit the labels.

(2063) In the directory list, European characters are sorted after “Z”. Thus, if you scroll through the directory list, names will be sorted as follows: Aa – Zz ÀÁÂÃÄàáâãä – Ýýÿ Workaround: Use the keypad to type the first few characters of the name. The search will quickly return useful results.

(2320) If two directories have the same name, only one of the directories will appear on the phones. Workaround: Use unique names for directories.

(2615) After you configure and submit a new directory source, you must press the Synchronize Now button. The directory should synchronize after the Submit.

(3024) When a directory source is a CSV file, the Search Directory by option should not include 'Name' (which is the common name). Workaround: When using a CSV source, do not use the Name search option. To search by first name or last name, select the 'Surname' and 'First Name' options.

Zone Paging •

(167) If you create a custom zone that has the same name as a zone that is imported from LDAP, the Application Gateway creates one zone per extension. Workaround: Remove the extra zones and create a custom zone with a unique name.

12

Release Notes

Known Issues

(196) The Application Gateway Administration Tool enables you to create multiple paging zones with the same name. You will see the duplicate names listed on Operation > Voice Office > Paging.

(470) If you toggle an extension’s license status from Licensed to Unlicensed in the Application Gateway License Monitor, the extension will continue to receive zone pages. Workaround: Remove the unlicensed extension from paging zones.

(685) If a user stops playing a page and then immediately receives a page from another phone, the user’s phone continues to display the name of the sender of the stopped page and not the current page. This is a display problem only; the page plays as expected.

(796) If you toggle an extension’s license status from Licensed to Unlicensed in the Application Gateway License Monitor, the extension will appear multiple times in any zones created from an LDAP source. This is a display issue only. Workaround: Resynchronize the Application Gateway with the LDAP server to update the display.

(1815) Adding a second zone in the Add/Edit Zone window overwrites the first zone. Workaround: After adding a zone, close the Add/Edit Zone window before adding another zone.

(2355) If an alert is broadcast while a page is active, the page audio is dropped.

(2685) If an alert and page are sent at the same time, the Application Gateway will become temporarily unavailable. Workaround: Do not simultaneously send an alert and page.

(4628) Nortel phones in XAS mode do not automatically return to telephony mode after a page. Workaround: To return to telephony mode after a page, you can press the Expand key, lift up the handset and then put it back onhook, or press the Goodbye key.

(5546) When an IP Phone 2007 in GXAS mode is denied a license while sending a page, the page is not terminated.

(5590) A paging zone will appear busy if you change the license status of a phone in that zone to unlicensed and then back to licensed. Workaround: To free the paging zone, go to Operation > Voice Office > Paging and click Submit.

Release Notes

13

Known Issues

(5570) A paging zone remains busy if you receive a broadcast alert while sending a page. The zone is freed when the timeout expires.

(5725) Although special characters are not supported in zone names, the Application Gateway interface does not prevent their use.

(5739) If you change a phone’s DN source from CSV to “Retrieve DN directly from the Phone,” the phone will not display newly created zones until after the user logs out and then logs in with the same DN on the phone.

(2620) After you upload an application icon, the icon does not appear on an IP Phone 2007 in GXAS mode. If you click the area where the icon should appear, GXAS locks up.

(5601) If you configure a Slideshow Panel and then try to change the screen type to Button Panel (Operation > Guest Services > Global) before defining the Button Panel (Operation > Guest Services > Buttons), the Slideshow continues to display.

Guest Services

Workaround: To switch from a Slideshow to a Button Panel, define the buttons and then change the screen type to Button Panel on the Operation > Guest Services > Global page. •

(5629) When the phone is displaying a card swipe screen and the user accesses a broadcast alert, the screen that displays after the user exits the alert is the welcome screen instead of the card swipe screen.

(5657) When you change the Hospitality Service Type (Operation > Guest Services > Hospitality), the default port that displays is incorrect. This is a display issue only; the correct port is used for the connection.

(5808) To change the Room Controls temperature scale between Fahrenheit and Celsius, you must update TempConfig.xml, which is in your Web application’s XML folder. For example, to change the default values to Celsius, update the file as follows: 26.5 18 22 c

After you save TempConfig.xml, you must reboot the IIS server and press the Submit button in the Application Gateway administration tool.

Known Issues

Application Gateway •

(486) Occasionally, the Application Gateway will take longer than usual to restart (ten minutes or more). During that time, the Application Gateway is unreachable. However, once the Application Gateway does start up, it operates correctly.

(2027) After changing the root password, you might be asked to enter the password multiple times when attempting to access an Administration Tool page. This issue has been observed only in Windows Internet Explorer. Workaround: Close and then re-open the browser window. Alternatively, use the Mozilla browser.

(2167) If the first line of the system log contains an XML tag and the system log is viewed through the Administration Tool Logging > System Log page in Internet Explorer, the log will not display and you will see the following error: “The XML page cannot be displayed. Cannot view XML input using style sheet.” Workaround: This is a display issue in Internet Explorer and does not occur in the Mozilla or Opera browsers. Alternatively view the log from the log archive or syslog.

(3427) Logging into the Administration Tool several times within a short time span might result in an inability to log into the Application Gateway. Workaround: If this occurs, restart the Application Gateway.

(3871) On the Administration > Date page, if you set the Update Schedule to Never, you will be prompted to clear the Time Server field. However, after you clear that field and click Update, the field is repopulated when the page refreshes. After that field displays again, clear it (again), click Update, and then restart the Application Gateway.

(3888) The Application Gateway Administration Tool does not support multiple simultaneous users. For example, if two administrators logged into the same Application Gateway attempt to work on the same zone (such as one person editing the zone while the other tries to remove it), the Application Gateway

(4579) After upgrading the Application Gateway, you cannot log back in until after you have closed the browser window.

(5526) You must power down the Application Gateway before upgrading the switch or firmware.
